Only list DCUO belongs on is the SOE land of misfit MMOs list. Consolesque MMOs are full of fail. Add in SOE and their terrible business acumen into the mix and you have nothing but epic disaster. Any game that has to talk about server mergers immediately following launch is, well, doomed.
I can accept CO being lower on the list because it needs time to "earn some credit" after the poor launch, even if I think it's much better now than DC is.
But SWG does not make the list? Sorry that is a big mistake.
SWG... Uncharted waters online...Ryzom? Not really sure about the last one, but ryzom is definitely not your regular fantasy mmo. Back to the list... I mean.. lego universe? really? lego? theres just hello kitty online missing on that list.
Can somebody tell me what made AO so special and awesome that it should be put on the number 2 spot? I'm talking about distinctive features and gameplay elements and such. I know it was sort of cyberpunk scifi on distant worlds, but that's as far as it goes.
The ease with which predictions are made on these forums: Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."
Very happy to see that SWG is not on the list and probably shouldn't be. I do believe that Yoda is some sort of goblin and the "force" is some sort of weird sorcery (ye ye mediclorians and bla bla).
Anyway as clearly stated it is the Writers personal oppinion. Nice to see that I'm not the only one that think EVE-online really is the best non-fantasy MMO out there.
40 Year old couples and gaming. Toons borrowed from Cyanide and Happiness.Text is Yours truly. Paint ftw
What a remarkable piece of written flatus. The title is not only innacurate, but wildly misleading. The first fault is with the writer, believing his own personal opinion should be titled "Top Ten non-fantasy MMOs". The second, equally guilty party is the editor who let such rubbish go up to be read by the masses - or few score of people - reading this.
It should be titled "A single player's personal opinion of what the top non - fantasy MMOs are."
Let's hear on what basis you made that list. On the basis of player population numbers provided by their companies? Perhaps on the basis on an open forum Vote of 20 readers of this website over the last week? On what you think people think?
for one SWG isnt even released so use some bloody common sense. and xyson is a good game for all the fools that claim its crap but havent even played it.
lol

- The best and most complex character equipment system thus far in any MMO.
- One of the best, compelling and immersive settings in MMOs.
- Pioneered dynamic content (missions) on a scale that for the most part remains unmatched to this day.
- Pioneered dynamic content (large scale invasions) that have served as precursor (8-9 years ago!) to things that other companies are only able to do now - i.e. public quests in WAR, invasions in Rift, GW2, etc.
- Social gear and activities - in-game radio station, dance clubs, etc.
- Some of the coolest and most diverse classes.
- Pioneered use of instancing (and they did it right!)
- One of the best character progression (level / skill) systems in an MMO.
Those are the major things that come to mind. But also - flying mounts (10 years ago), Grid travel system, vehicles, land control & mass scale pvp, balance of technology and "casting", battlegrounds, etc, etc.
Really the list should probably be:
1. EVE / AO (Tie since they are really different games)
3. SWG
4. City of Heroes
EDIT: I totally forgot about Planetside. It probably fits right about here...
5. Tabula Rasa
6. Fallen Earth
7. Ryzom

Everything else: Face of Mankind, Necron, Earth and Beyond, Jumpgate, STO, etc.

This isn't a players choice award list, it's the individual writers list, so to all those complaining, realize what you think isn't what everyone thinks.

What do all of them have in common ? They all are pretty bad mmos that only "the certain few" love to play.
Well for one thats your opinion, and last time i checked Eve is pretty much the second most popular mmo in America. If you classify that as a select few, i suppose every other mmo besides wow also qualifies.

There is a difference between saying "these my 10 favourite games" and saying "these are what i think are the 10 best games". For example, I didn't at all like planetside, nor have I been able to play EVE for more than 2 months at a time. So they're not "my favourite" games. However, as something that is knowledgeable in the in MMO world, I do think that EVE is probably the best sci-fi game and that planetside should be on the list.
Everything is one person's opinion. But one person's opinion about what they personally like and what they think is the best are not the same thing. As pointed out, a list such at this should have had some kind of criteria and objective (reasonably) evaluation.
I personally quite liked Auto Assault. But just because I liked it doesn't mean it belongs in a top-10 list.

Well Mr Murphy has his opinion, but to me this list is more: Top ten non-fantasy MMO's that failed expectations...
It seems he has a deed facination with the super hero theme, as all 3 are here. Even though Champ, and DC wish they could pull / retain / achieve the subscribers CoH/V has(had). Didn't Champ go soo well it launched, merged, and went Free inside of a year-year an a half?
Jumpgate is not an MMO, and Jumpgate Evolution is in trouble, possibly canceled.
PotBS launched well, but had a few issues, then the Dev's started the: "It's our game, not yours we'll put what WE think you want, not what your ansking for" As a result players, asked again "No we want this and here's why" Dev's again said "It's our game" Players said fine you play, and started leaving. Now it's free to play..
Perhaps a reason this is on the list is: Top ten reasons your non-fantasy MMO can callapse?
But again the article is his opinion, and was an interesting read. I just hope the backlash for recomending your readers try some of these above mentioned titles does not hurt the credability of MMORPG.com overall.
SWTOR. Face it, in the Scooby Doo Mystery Solving Van of coolness, this game is Velma. In this current MMO climate it has about as much chance for survival as a group of inquisitive teenagers in a 1980s slasher flick. -Tardcore May, 2011

Context is key sure, but I think "the lists" context has always been what Bill feels. Putting this list in the context of his picks, it makes sense that it would be the MMO's he feels are the best for his own reasons.

EVE is far above anything on this list. But AO could split second place with SWG
Neocron definitely should be here same as Face of Mankind
SWG... Uncharted waters online...Ryzom? Not really sure about the last one, but ryzom is definitely not your regular fantasy mmo. Back to the list... I mean.. lego universe? really? lego? theres just hello kitty online missing on that list.
Champions Online is awesome, it has tons of missions even for free user!
How can you put Xsyon in this list. That game is terrible, total disaster and you put it as number 8, no way.
And Fallen Earth number 2? LOL, did you ran our of other options? I would say Fallen Earth should be somewhere around 5-6.
Really? No Global Agenda?
Loved Fallen Earth - wish I knew people whom still played

This is the real list, and please remove Xsyon, it is a shame to add it to the list.
Someone picked a real bad time to mention Jumpgate because nobody can sign up or get in to the game for a moment.
And I was also surprised that NeoCron and PlanetSide didn't make it on the list.

what about Neocron at his time
Eve the 2nd most popular mmo in America ? Alllrighty then! LOL seriously ?
I don't normally like to associate myself with the bitter ex-SWG vets, but they are definitely right this time, it should be in the list.
And if we were being fussy, I'd actually put pre-NGE SWG at number 2 in the list behind EVE.
