Played DAOC for 5 years in the day. Never heard of an 8 man taking out a 100 man zerg at one time. Although, I have seen and been a part of some 8 v 24 fights and the 8 man come out on top. Please link some video evidence of the 8 v 100 combat. I'd love to see how they pulled it off. Until I see it myself, I will never believe it.
I've heard that GW2 improved alot on the original concepts of DAOC.
Some ex-DAOC online players I've spoken to have said that the daoc system allows small groups to roam around and if they played well they can take on mass numbers of 100+ even if they are in groups of 8. (Sorry I've never played DAOC before)
Games like WAR, Aion and AOC(if i recall correctly) have made extremely big numbered zerg guilds like goon squad very notorious to the point where people will not roll on that server's opposite faction.
I want to ask whether the WvWvW system in GW2 places more emphasis on small group combat/tactical fighting(like DAOC?) rather than the "big zerg takes all" situation like we've seen in WAR and Aion.
Thanks.
Smaller organized groups could take out larger groups in DAOC.
But I've never heard 8 vs 100. Hyperbole maybe?
Never heard of successful 8 vs 100 fights either but here are some nice 8 vs 16-40 Videos from youtube:
I've been on the losing end of a 8 vs 24 fight, but that was back when TOA was fairly new and our oppoents had a huge advantage by having all their TOA skills (8 or so) while we were mostly ranks 2 and 3.
I might believe 8 vs 40 (there was a group of Hibs on our server, MLF run by a guy named "the General" and they were pretty legendary) out in open combat but remember, DAOC had severe crowd control mechanics back then, a single Sorcerer could hold you in place for up to a minute, (without counters), I haven't seen any game come remotely close to DAOC in this regard,
While smaller can beat larger (happens in EVE pretty often), there comes a tipping point, and no, I don't believe 5 will ever beat 50, especially if the 50 belong to a zerg guild like Goons.
Not sure how well Goons organize in other games, but in EVE they are most definitely a force to be reckoned with however they do not act like jerks to everyone, in fact I'm currently in a corp that's allied with them and we all fight together for a common goal, I suspect the same will be true in GW2.
far from it. in Eve the goons are widely regarded as being the target of choice.. certainly.. there is no respect for them.. nor trust.. .. having a goonswarm member on a KM .. .. i've seen roams extended by 20 systems just to get in on those.... though.. are there really as many of them these days as there used to be
the point about teamwork vs Zerg tactics is a good one though.. in Eve at least.. good teamwork wins battles.. though obviously that also includes good strategies
I played daoc many years and it indeed was possible(albiet very very rare) to 8v100. In fact we did this on a few occasions on Lancelot. Lancelot was famous for it's Warder Zerg(the lowest rank you could get on albion) to which basically was massive numbers of fresh players that had no idea what to do in pvp and had very bad gear. Most of these people are literally 1 shots for my Berserker. Basically My gank group of 8 would catch these massive zergs trying to take keeps and bomb them.(there were spells in the game that did Point Blank area of effect damage). You could literally drop 15 people with bad health in 1 pbae so you can imagine loads of enemy players coming around a corner walking into this pbae from multiple casters trying to take the keep. One thing about daoc that made it so good was Death spam. You knew when a group was bombing because you'd see the same names spam your combat log over and over. I remember one time my gank group teamed up with another high ranked gank group and basically by ourselves stopped a massive 200+ person Relic Raid.(Granted we didn't engage them open field, we merely took keeps that they needed to capture the relic and hit the backsides of their zerg and running off picking them off slowly)
