Memory leak

It's been a little while but I thought I would come back and play again. I installed the client and let the patcher run over-night. No problems.

I was just about to renew my sub when after cruising the forums, I discovered that there seems to be a memory leak problem for people who have 64bit OS's. This halted me in my tracks.

The last thing I need is a client that eats RAM for breakfast. I'm already wary about my system specs. My PC is much better than when I first played but after reading a few posts, there are people that have systems which blow mine away (I can never stay on top of the curve) and they are still having performance issues. Add the mem leak to this and I decided to wait until I learned some more before I commit.

Since I can't post on the official forums unless I renew ... and I won't do that if there are major problems ... hopefully, someone on here can clue me in to any performance issues and the status of the mem leak fix. I remember playing EQ2 all those years ago with the same problems and it just takes the fun away.

So .... can anyone clue me in?

Thanks!

I never experienced a perfomance loss. I play at most in one session 3-4 hours. I'm running Win7 x64 8g RAM ATI 5700. My only beef with the performance of the game is the load times.

I don't know how else to check for a performance loss. I play the game in DX10 and most of the settings are cranked to the max.

I haven't heard about any memory leak ior read about it on the forums, but I can tell you my personal experience. I have WinProf 64 OS and I don't have any memory problem. I have ram and CPU meters running all the time and they don't stress out running on a GTX 450 1GB, Intel Core i5-655K, w 4 gigs of ram. Most settings are high and running DX10. I have turned down some that I frankly can't tell the difference visually. Get decent FPS 30-50.

On the AoC forums, this thread: http://forums.ageofconan.com/showthread.php?t=232368 talks about it and it seems to affect some but not all. I guess I can just try it and see.

The game engine update fixed most of the memory issues with the game but some people like you said experience problems. That being said I have never encountered any memory issues myself and I have played the game since launch. Windows 7x64.

The majority of people, playing the game don't have issues and will never post on the forums so those threads represent the minority of people playing the game.

  • As a follow-up, I've received the "Your account is activated" email so now its a moot point. I'll just try it and see. Nothing to lose but time ..... and it beats watching TV.

Nope. Read the thread. I've not had those problems. Since the dreamworld patch it even runs with lowered settings on my $450 gateway craptop.

I had the same problem when playing last night. I read somewhere in the AOC forums that if you reboot your computer it will be fine. This worked for the person who suggested it and a few others in the forum.

I gave it a try and it did indeed improve my performance but it wasn't exactly up to par with what i was used to when I was an active subscriber.

    I have Win7ProfX64

Always post your PC specs -  :)

The issue with W7 64bit is that it will use 4gbs of ram. On the test server they have been working on using less RAM for 64 bit. And with the nvidia system they implemented it is serve side anti alias - so they stil have some tweeeking to do, but take into account they have hired new devs and their system team for the engine update is working on Anarchy Online now but system changes are still coming. We are also going to see the inventory expanded.

Whats cool about wanting to see if AoC is doing any better is that you can download the unlimited trial from Level 1-20. Then you can check performance issues. The maps for godslayer are larger than all the previous maps but the loading time has improved. If you hit wicanna and need a guild look me up--- Lateris

Been there since beta and it's still there.  I checked yesterday.  It's been well-documented and FC is not going to fix it... ever.

Apparently this doesn't apply to everyone, since there are hordes of people with 64-bit OS who can play it without any memory leak issues at all.

My guess is that just with the other memory leak issues in the course of time this has been resolved for the majority of people, but for a small group of people this problem remains for whatever reason.

The bug was never applicable to all configs.... just maybe 40% of 64-bit rigs. That said, I'm. Glad that some people can play the game for hours without a crash, but it pissses me off to know that it's not fixed. Also, every time I reboot my PC, AOC deletes my 4 gigs of of patches... If you suffer from the memory leak use this app, it's working for many of us who do http://www.koshyjohn.com/software/memclean/

It's a memory cleaner than cleans the excess memory usage used by the apps on your PC, it usually keeps AoC down to under a gig. You can set it to clean every 5 mins.

OK Kabaal, so what do I do about the patches being deleted... and while we're at it, has anybody found map/ui mods that take the game forward from the year 1999?

Well last time I played AOC  I didn't have memory issues but again one of my computers uses 8 Gigs of ram, my other pc has 16 GB of ram, and I did have issues with memory, but that was when I used an ATI Card on AOC with DX 10 Graphics beta the water would disappear, and certain graphics bugs which would cause the game to crash.

I would try turning down graphics, and try using DX9 Instead of DX10 if it is still in beta, and that might solved the problem, although I have not logged into AOC for at least 6 months so it was quite a bit ago.

I'm running on Win7 Home Premium 64bit with settings up pretty high; not maxed, but close.

The game runs absolutely beautifully on my system, and I've played the game in 4+ hour sittings several times now. So, I guess I'm one of the lucky ones for whom the issue was addressed. Or, if it's happening, it's so minute that I'm not noticing it at all.

Not familiar with the patches being deleted issue...

Regarding the UI, though, it's kinda silly to ask others how to improve something that is 100% subjective. Even if they give you a suggestion for what they think is better, you might still think it's not good enough.

For example, I think the UI is fine and not at all "something from 1999". Others think it's atrocious. Some don't seem to have an opinion either way.

Best bet is to look around and find something that seems better to you. There's always curse.com's AoC section.

I downloaded the trial and really like the game, sadly though, I fall into the group that suffers from this memory leak. Lateris, would you be able to update this thread if they get close to solving this problem? I really need a game to play!

  • LaterisLateris Member UncommonPosts: 1,849

Absolutely. Post your system specs as well.

I just logged into the test server - issues is the same. On the test server and the live game I can play with no issues with all my settings cranked. It is just a high usage of ram. 4 out of 8gbs in 64bit is getting used. 64 bit is designed to use more memory from what I have read. Here are my specs- I am going to hit up some of my buddies who understand memry leaks with game engines to explain- but at this point is it unplayable for you?

I would not mind trying it in Windows 7 32 bit and then XP- kinda defeats the purpose of 64 bit though. I have been having issues with alesis on 64 bit drivers for audio and they sent me a beta driver that fixed the issue. I suspect Microsoft needs to get involved now.

11.5 drivers are out for ATI.

I believe Vista and up the OS will use all RAM available and release it when needed. Suppose to make the applications start faster. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Another thing I would suggest is see if you have a memory leak using DX9 or DX10, switch out and see.

As for the poster that loses patches when exits or reboots game... that's the first I heard of this. You might try using AOCQS from the Curse site. Good for both posters as you can tweak the AOCQS to use all cores of your processor and other tweaks.

It's playable and I get good fps but every so often I freeze for just a second. Just enough to drive me nuts when I'm trying to play. Even when I'm in the single player mode. I'm thinking about getting another 4 gb of ram to make it 8 total. You think that may stop the suttering? Oh I also am using memory cleaner now too.

You're using DDR3 ram that is like the fastest ram at the moment. I'm using DDR2 and don't have a problem. Maybe your hard drive needs a good defrag?
