You no longer have to make an alt to act like an ass!  You now can just act like one, then next week move to another server and act like one there.  Not to worry though because the week after that? YES! You can move again!

The WoWification of Rift is happening! (Save charging money to transfer, heck why do that when we can just let everyone bounce around, ruin communities, create dead servers and allow asshats to run rampant!)

Do what most other players do and just put em on ignore and forget about em, what the .... do i care if they transfare or not. Those poeple are dead to me the moment i hit ignore.

Asshats will be asshats free transfare or not, xserver or not. for everyone you ignore someone else will invite em to guild and have a good time with em. If you think everyone you blacklist the hole server will blacklist ur delusional.

I've yet to come across any real "asshats" in rift thus far . Maybe I've been lucky but I've yet to ignore anyone . Biut I did enter the game on the guardian side with friends from lotro and on the defiant side with old friends from WoW . Maybe I've become desencitised to arsehatism after all those years in WoW lol . I mean you in that game it sometimes seams nearly impossible to find friendly players anymore . Maybe Rift will go down the same road but at present the community is by en large quite friendly and helpful .

I've also tried several different servers and only did I see significantly low populations on the roll playing servers . The others seam to be pretty well populated (even prior to the free trials) . If anything its the high population servers that might be a problem . I also agree once a week transfers might be a little too frequent . Once a month may have been better .

well rift might not have too many original ideas, but this certainly is one of them.

kudos to trion, now start writing more content *bullwhip*

You don't have to be in vent for a T1 tbh they are too easy.   I prefer to be in vent for them, but....  The guild that I went with didn't invite me to their vent and were rude anyhow. People I probably don't want to subject myself to talking with.

At any rate, before I unsubbed a month ago I was running regular t1's and t2's with my guild in vent, and we were starting to get into Greenscale Raids a lil bit.

Kinda regret leaving for a month, I hope my guild still has a place for me in the raids.

    FAQ at http://forums.riftgame.com/showthread.php?195616-Free-Character-Transfer-FAQ

    "Hi all,

As announced, Free Character Transfers will be released in RIFT Update 1.3. These Free Character Transfers will be available to players on select shards via a new in-game feature. We are pleased to be able to offer this service to our players and hope you find it to be a great way to further enrich your experience and connect with others, we have provided a brief FAQ outlining this new feature below.

We’ll continue to release additional details as we get closer to the release of 1.3 and we encourage you to ask any questions you might have, we’ll do our best to answer all we can – thanks!

    What are Free Character Transfers?

    • Free Character Transfers will allow you to move your characters to select shards through an easy to use, in-game feature.

How often can I transfer my character?

    • We’re allowing one free transfer, per character, to a select shard every 7 days. Please note this is subject to change while we continue to develop and test the new service.

What do you mean “select shards”?

    • We want the shard you select to provide the best experience possible. It is important that there remains a balance between Guardian and Defiant players and to that available shards do not become too over populated or unbalanced. For this reason you will only be able to move to specific shards we’ve selected to accept new transfers, please note the shards available for transfer may change over time.

Can I move from a PvP shard to a PvE shard or vice-versa?

    • Of course! The rule set of your current shard will not prevent you from moving to a shard of a different type. So PvP, RP, PvE, or RPPvP to your heart’s content - Just remember, you’re subject to the rules of your new home! (For example, non-consensual PvP on PvP shards and stricter naming policies on RP shards.)

    What about my stuff?

    • We’ll have specific details later, but have no fear! You’ll be able to take your items, currencies, achievements, titles, pets, collections, and heck, maybe even the kitchen sink!

Can I transfer from a North American Shard to a European Shard?

    • Not right now, currently transfers will be restricted to select shards in your territory.

I’m a guild leader, can I transfer my guild?

    • Absolutely, we know you and your members work hard to level your guild and make it your own. We’ll announce more details about this feature closer to its release, stay tuned!

Will these transfers always be free for everyone?

    • For the forseeable future – yes! They could even become a permanent addition to the RIFT experience. This is very much an experiment we want to try and we feel this feature will add a unique way to play RIFT unlike other MMO’s. We’ll see how it goes and keep an eye out for any issues that arise.

So, when will 1.3 be released?

    • 1.3 is the next major installment for RIFT and will arrive early this summer. Keep an eye on www.riftgame.com and here on the forums for more details as we get closer to its release!

    Updated - 05/23/11 @ 12:13PM PDT

What if my character or guild's name is already taken on the shard I want to transfer to?

    • You'll be warned in the event of a naming conflict, should you decide to continue with the transfer you will be forced to re-name your character or guild before playing.

Will I be able to change my characters faction (from Defiant to Guardian for example) when I transfer or transfer my Character to another active account?

    • Not at this time, while these options are something we might look into in the future they will not be available for the initial release of the Free Character Transfer feature."

This is really no surpise, it was a damned if you do and damned if you don't thing.

They could either open up far too many servers at launch or restrict the number of copies they sold the first month. Neither is great.

The only good solutions to this thing that plagues almost all launching games is what ANET is doing with GW2, free server transfers whenever you like. That way there will always be enough servers with many people on and if you think your server is too desolate you can change easily, free and fast.

Or you can like Eve and GW only have huge server (and possibly open up instances if too many people gets in the same place). But I think you need a larger game than Rift for that to work well (world size I mean).

I'm just waiting for someone to bring up the stupid argument of breaking the community.......

    or Rift is being desperate.

I already have my troll trap set up here :)

PS: question about the feature, how is guild gonna be handled? Will I have to quit my guild to go to another server? or will Guild be cross servers now?

Another great move. Rift definitively is success, despite some problems. There are only 2 games in history I become addicted :-), Wow and now Rift.

However I took unplanned break from Rift to play again Wow. Only thing I really hate (and made me return to wow before planned) are all that invasions that happen in middle of npc quest hubs more or less regularly. As they are not soloable (in 99% of cases) not even with top level player in lv. 20 area, they would require a lot of players at that place. And this is simply not happenig. So had enough of 4 to 6 hours waiting before npc quest area was cleared of enemies so I could countinue. And had enough of logging 3 days in a row to just find three will be no business as area was so heavily infested that questing was completely impossible. At least not in next aprox 2 hours I had time to play. This I can not express how much I hate and is ruining The Game. This is I repeat only sole reason I'm so fast back to wow.

Sounds like a great idea. The fact that you can move your Toon yourself in-game once a week is awesome!!

  • ManestreamManestream Member UncommonPosts: 941

Currently on a server that is currently lucky to see 1 rift invasion in silverwoods/gloomwoods/scarlet gorge in a day, there are no groups going into any of teh low level instances at all either :(

For me most servers are pretty empty (PvE) EU English servers. The PvP servers are better however after being ganked every 3 minutes by a level ?? in gloomwoods/scarlet gorge (as the level 50's have nothing better to do i suppose than go round and kill low level players) and basically just camp and kill all day long like this. Anyone else would be bored after 30-60 mins but this game doesnt seem to do that.

Anyways rolled on another PvE server, problems with connection to that 1 server though made me re-roll off the busiest server to another, slightly better than the 5 previous but not by much :(

The way i see things is this, the game requires practically full server load to experiance the proper game mechanics and rift triggers to get anywhere, if the server is not full you can damn well expect to hardly see much of the game untill you max out your level and then go back to what you missed knowing you would be doign that for sweet FA, i would rather get it done and take my time leveling than having to backtrack like that = boring and game dies (fully expect that as the main reason many have left due to boredom).

So this new thing of being able to jump servers once a week will hopefully have players jumping and filling up some servers, at which point Trion may then see which are virtually empty and shut them down, instead of them saying you must go here, there letting the communtity jump over. Mark my words when a server becomes virtually empty they will shut it down but move left over players to another server, however they will be able to move next time they log-in/re-enable their account.

As far as blizard goes it is you must move here or here (not much choice in the matter), have moved from 1 server that for 2 years had a 9-1 ratio against alliance that eventually went to a 4-1 ratio then was moved to a new server that had a 9-1 ratio against you again = bored and dumb. Apparently the horde who did have the upper hand had no choice but to move to under par servers that were low on horde which they did not like.

So yes, trion have done a good thing here, but i can believe things will change if everyone jumps to differant servers every week. Would be nice to see how things work out here.

I preffer when company tries to keep customers with free aditional services (Trion), compared to when they just try to get very last cent from remaing customers (like Blizzard with new LFG)

It's called a final attempt to make themselves look better. On multiple gaming forums, on rifts own forums, there are tons of posts saying the game is already stale, some servers desolate, and others starting to go downhill.  Give it a couple more months and youll see server merges or some servers actually being shut down, with the excuse of "more control" or "pooling resources to make other servers bigger".  It's happened dozens of times before. And it's happening again.

I really wanted RIFT to be good and to challenge other mmo's. However it seems to be heading the same way as WAR or AoC.  Thats not to sie the game will die, but it will dwindle in population, as it already is, then the inevitable closures will happen.

I play Rift both on off times and peak times thanks to my irregular work hours and even on odd hours i have seen only two US servers on low and everything else on medium. During peak times i have to deal with queues so i have no idea from where the comparisons are coming with AOC an WAR. Both of these titles lost majority of subs after first month and Rift is still going strong after 2 months.

But it is human nature i guess, humans need to complain. If blizzard charges you for server transfers they are greedy pigs and if Trion does it for free they are just trying to look good since their game is failing. MMO companies just can't win.

the only possible con i can see from this, is that the quieter shards are going to become even more quieter possibly meaning empty servers...  (am now level 50 and only done 4 dungeon runs as can not find any groups via chat channels or lfd tool, also now i'm 50 and have the stats, thanks for buying some stuff off the AH, I still can't find any groups for the Tier 1 dungeons, yet my server is classed as medium population :s  lol)

on the plus side if you're on a quiet server like I am for example, then they will keep their playerbase as those people will be able to transfer to a higher capacity server and get more out of the game.  Also as it's free then it's a hugh one up on Blizzard.

Lets just say that I am glad there is one company out there offering more for less unlike NC Soft, and all these other RIP-OFF Micro Transaction Companies, if Rifti s really going to be a P2P MMO, and a great game like this I just might end up buying a collectors version next month and playing it, after all Rift was decent during Beta, I just never bothered to buy it until I see how it was going to turn out, Lets just say this to me is a step foward in a good direction of a MMO Community, and lets hope they keep their word because I take a snapshot of their blog that says it will be free.

    Rift & Micro Transactions

I have a question about Rift.

I would like to find out that if I do decide to purchase Rift if this game is going to support Micro Transactions down the line like NC Soft, Sony & Blizzard did because I have been a long time NC Soft player, and have quit their service after they have pissed me off asking people to pay $9.99 per character change.

If rift should get a Barbershop, or character Customizations in game, or such will we have to pay Extra fees like to change each and every single time or such becuase I am somewhat interested in buying this game, but not looking for any game that is supporting Micro Transactions and Nickel & Dime its customers unless of course it is something like a server change or something, and would like to get info on this before I actually buy the game.

    Thanks.

    GM Response.

This is awesome. I wish every MMO did this. Trion is leading the way in a lot of things, even though most of the game is your average MMO.

Wow, FREE transfers? Man, i remember paying $20-40 for these in past games..

I'am just interested in seeing how many people flock to my server (braircliff) i'am already waiting in ques 1/3 the time i log lol.. I hope they'll limit it so that server dosn't became anymore flooded then it is.. And also hopefully merge a few of the lower pop servers as playing this game on a low pop shard dosn't do it ANY justice.

Trion offers free xfers so they dont have to do server merges. Ppl will flock to the higher populated servers, filling them up. Trion will then use the defunct servers for different rulesets or f2p options etc, then say their game is a massive success, even tho it's pretty obvious what they are doing.

  • abyss610abyss610 Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 1,131

what they should do is not allow name changes and in stead ad an abreviation representing your original server. like when i returned in Aion after the server mergers i still had my names but they had a YS at the end saying i was from yestiel (i think it was?) before the transfers. now i did also get a free name change thing in my characters' bags so i can change it. like my main had the YS at the end but when i used the name cupon i was able to get the same name anyway. seemed like they didn't even do a name check when they transfered just transfered and let us sort it out.

not that i think its really NEEDED because people will be ass holes reguardless of what trion does (if the person is an asshole anyway) but would shut up the trolls claiming it will be armagedon or what ever, because people will be dicks now that they can just transfer once a week.

i remember on EQOA there was a guy that was a complete ass, no one could stand him on his server.he didn't really break the rules or anything he was just an ass. well he transfered to my server some how (they didn't and don't transfer characters on there not even paid for) gms felt sorry or something idk what it was.but once on my server guess what? he was still a dick and no one could stand him there either and refused to group with him.....

his name was Sub,i even saw guilds with names ripping on him. one was called "Subs name is sub because he always has meat between his buns" and it had alot of memebers in it.

bottom line is people will act how they're going to act no matter what but there is ways they can fix it if it becomes a problem.

  • shawn01shawn01 Member UncommonPosts: 166

Its great that its free, but to me this looks like a way of consolidating servers while pretending its not cause the game is losing a massive amount of subscribers. To me Warhammer had a way better endgame than Rift, and it is considered a failure, i dont understand why people think this game will not be the same.

I must say though, it is sorta clever, to fool the sheep in this way.
