I can understand that Areanet wants to drag the release date out to make sure the game is extra polished and to also have enough time to advertise to the entire mmo community, but I also think there's a point where it MAY hurt them just a bit. Before you jump to conclusions just hear me out.
I feel that hype for games for me has a normal distribution. I look into games and i gradually get hyped up to the point where i cannot wait for a game to come out. But that peak only lasts for a certain amount of time.
I feel like I have been anticipating this game for years now and my excitement is waning with time.
What are your opinions on this matter? Do you think that Anet could possibly be hurting their subs by announcing the game too fast and making players wait longer?

I honestly think the only reason they came out with any GW2 info is for competition purposes. There are many games in the horizon that are coming out (apparently) before GW2 that will compete directly with it. So, the only way for them to focus players attention away from this games to some extenct is to release info.
My interest waxes and wanes. I will admit that I was more excited about it last summer when everything was being announced, but several things in my life since then: 1. I am back in school, this time for my Masters, 2. I am now playing Guild Wars, when last summer I was playing nothing, and 3. It is not quite the hyped expo season yet! I think that once I complete my degree in September and the expo season starts again then the hype will build again for me. I am having a blast though playing GW casually in the mean time!
Since the game is B2P, subs are not really a concern. They just need to have strong box sales which I think will be accomplished fairly well, depending on what recent releases are out.
Good troll attempt,
however, there will not be subs in GW2, so they cannot be hurting them.
I don't see why one would be expecting that game anytime soon either. Always count at least 1 year from start of beta. Beta has yet to start, and they basically stated their beta would be a "demo" because gaming companies suck at choosing good testers, and they admit they suck too. So only when the game is ready will it go in Beta phase.
I think they had sort of a setback in their development trajectory, with the Sylvari redesign and the way they talk about how they're busy with the underwater combat. I suspect that initially they planned to release earlier, this year, and that's why the media launch last year, but when it became clear that development would take additional time to get things right and done, that's when the information releases started to spread out over a longer period of time.
In the end, I don't think it matters much. When the game is done, it will release under a huge amount of attention.

The ease with which predictions are made on these forums:
Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."
They are building interest, and as long as they deliver on what they say, I dont see them doing badly on box sales even if its not the first week. Most of us mmo players have been burned at least once by a company releasing an unfinished/unpolished game, so I wouldnt be surprised to see some sit back for launch but as soon as the news gets out that its good and everything they said it was gonna be(if it is of course) that word of mouth travels real fast among friends. I want it to release soon also but not at the cost of it not being the game i want it to be, which is the gmae Anet is tellin all of us it will be.
What he said.

jesus... not every post you don't perosnally like is a troll attempt...
@ OP though- Yeah, i actually do see how spinning this out too long could be detrimental to them, though not in a massive way that will matter at launch. I think peoplethat get pig sick of the spin will soon recover when it gets to crunch time
I feel more confident the longer it takes. If they push the release date back a couple times, I would feel good about it. I'm trying to avoid some of the info they are putting out, so as not to spoil my experience once I actually get to play.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
My excitement will probably die down a bit, but I don't see that as a bad thing. Because once I do finally get the game I won't be expecting the world's most perfect game and I will enjoy my experience so much more.

Keeping myself entertained in another game at the moment, so I can wait. Developing an MMO game is probably the biggest challenge in programing, so I guess I prefer they take their time to do it right.
Well, I hate the wait, but at the same time, I want the developers to have a quality game, which, takes allot of time.
I have highs and lows about waiting for this game, but I'm certain that no matter what, when the release date is announced I will be absolutely pumped about it
All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.
I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.
I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.
I don't hate much, but I hate Apple© with a passion. If Steve Jobs was alive, I would punch him in the face.
As long as they keep pumping out information, I will be happy until its release. I wish that they would post something everyday, but I understand that it would be a lot of extra work.
I can see why people could be annoyed on having to wait for GW2 if that's the only game they're looking forward to.
I on the other hand hope they take as much time as they need if for no other reason than to give me a few solid months to mess around with swtor before I dive head first in to GW2. I hate when 2 games I really want to play come out at the same time or close to it. That goes doubly for MMO's.
the game is going to release in less than 10 months -- wait doesnt bother me at all

Been following GW2 for how many years now? 5? Can't remember when the first announcement was. I passed "hyped" a long time ago. I look forward to trying it like everyone else. I'm predicting a 2012 release date but even that doesn't seem certain at this point. So until then...there is a' plenty else to be doing. :-)
I think they started the more information heavy type marketing too early and they have pulled back a bit, probably due to development as others said. After the last couple years, I tend to just train myself not to get too excited until closer to release just seems to work better for me and my friends.

Lucky for you there's a beta later on this year.
No surprise here. ArenaNet goes by the same criteria Blizzard uses. "It will be done when its done". They also strive for quality. Why would they follow some of Blizzards formula you ask? Because the founders of ArenaNet are former blizzard employees (Pre-WoW).
So it only makes sense to go with what works. Quality = Success
If they need another year, so be it. Its better to have a polished game at release to keep the community, than to have a buggy piece of crap. *cough* Vangard *cough* Earthrise
Release when it is done and good is the way to go. That's a formula that works. The idea that the hype can die out just doesn't seem to actually play out in reality when you consider companies that talk about a game for years before a release (say, any Blizzard game).
Many a game that had my interest has fallen under the wait of time. Lives change. Interest wanes. The wait can kill interest, but remember the interest in GW2 right now is people like us: People on the net, following the game. Most people aren't following it or even knows about it's existence. So think about the advertising campaign to come. The Expo season to come. The word of mouth once the game releases to come. Our interest is minutia in the scheme of things. We are people into the game before it releases. Once it releases it's a whole 'nother story.
@jpsaply
Nnnnot exactly. They were of the now defunct Blizzard North, which were responsible for Diablo and Diablo II, and not of Blizzard itself. They left around the time of the Vivendi purchase as they couldn't stand the cloying corporate atmosphere and how incredibly money-driven Blizzard had become, and they all went their own ways. One group formed Runic Entertainment, the other formed ArenaNet.
You can see from Diablo III just how much Blizzard are suffering at their loss. The art direction of DIII is simply appalling.
My opinion on the wait...patience is a virtue.
While I have my pet release date hopes, my opinion on the wait is, I'll wait as long as it takes. It's not like there's anything remotely comparable on the horizon, in my view (in terms of the gameplay mechanics I personally value).
