I particularly enjoyed the article. There was plenty of info in it, even for folks like me who left SWG ages ago BECAUSE we disliked the combat system there. I may even try it out again just to see how the new cu works for my old char in-game.

It was my understanding that these people got travel expenses paid.
And sorry, on my game box is the LucasArts Logo and its called a Lucasarts game there. SOE has developed it and runs it for LA, but only Lucas ultimately calls the shots (which, as we have seen with Jedi craziness, is not exactly the best situation).

Eril, try rereading what I posted. Just cause it has the LA logo, in no way means that Lucas has much if any control over the way the game runs. Lucas licences out the franchise to who ever is willing to pay him the most for it. Does SOE own Star Wars? No. Do they own SWG? Yeap, they sure do. Even if LA pulls the franchise from them, they still own the code. Lucas Arts does not own it, they do not manage it, they do not promote it. The only control that Lucas has over the game is content. Star Wars stuff.
As to what they got paid, how they got paid, or anything else, its speculation, on both our parts. Thats why I didnt post anything in particular. I dont know the details of their appearance and neither do you, unless you work for SoE. I simply wondered about it. Didnt say they did or didnt hire professional actors to appear in the spot. Just mused about it, seeing as how their experience differed so greatly from my own. Going to debate me the fact of if I enjoy the game or not now?
I have read this forum and what everyone has to say about the CU and there are a few who like it and a few who don't.
But for me the major point has been missed, with the new CU in plass SWG is simply not the game I originaly bought and wanted tp play, now before someone tells me that games change over time well guess what, I know that already.
Now I'm sure the CU will work for some people but for the large number of vet's it does not and it has nothing to do with not being god like, with the introduction of the new CU the powers that be destroyed the ability to craft and totaly messed up anyones chances to play a jedi.
When I play I enjoy both group and solo activetys but the CU was and is forceing players into a grouping situation wich meany people dislike, yes you can solo but not if you wish to progress.
This was a great game that has in my opion become a pale shadow of itself, now SOE has given people and the press many reasons for why thay have done what thay have but in the end it dont matter why, the bottom line is this is no longer the game that we paid hard cash for.
Lucas made a mistake insisting on the CU, yes I said Lucas as after all SOE only run this game for them and thay ultimatley call the shots.
Its is time people stop flameing each other cos one likes it and another dont, if you like it then good for you, have fun playing it but if you dont like it then do what I did, leave and play something else.
It does not matter wich way you travel, becuse there is only one journey
It has changed the skill-based game I loved into a level-based game, which has made the playstyle less free. I am still playing, but not with as much enjoyment as I had before. I am now in a game similar to most other big MMO's, where the game rules tell we what I can and cannot do. No amount of buffs/equipment/tactics will let even a group of 8 low level players defeat a mob 10 levels higher than them. The artificial damage multiplier will ensure that it doesn't happen.
So essentially, the game tells me to fight the things close to my level, not to try and "think outside the box". It was fun while it lasted, and I will miss it.
I play primarily a crafter, and needless to say, the CU has made my life VERY difficult. Things will probably even out later, as there has to be another CU (Crafter Upgrade). My list of complaints are many, but most have already been mentioned earlier. Yes, I can group with a level 80 combatant and be temporarily "upgraded" to level 80, but if that player does not go along with me, my level drops down to 14 as soon as I'm out of range. Finding someone to tag along with me on survey runs, harvester runs and vendor restocking runs for at least 1-2 hours EVERY DAY is impossible.
My only alternative is to change my playstyle completely, which is not something I look forward to.
I have no problem paying contract miners to get my resources for me, but they seem to be in short supply at the moment. The respec (and the demands of the the new level system) has made most people try to squeeze as much combat potential as possible out of their skillpoints. In a month or two, I'm sure we'll see more pure combat templates drifting toward surveying/mining, because there will be a lot of money to be made there. Untill then it will be rough going.
I am a long-established chef, with a good few million in cash and resources stashed away, so I can afford the drop in my profit margin which will happen if I buy resources only from suppliers. Tough, but that's life, I can adapt. A new start-up crafter may not find that as easy to live with as I do.
As for the supply of creature resources, I'm a little worried about that. Pre-CU, it was not too difficult to persuade a jedi-grinder to go after a particular kind of meat, regardless of the creature it dropped from. They got loads of XP anyway, and a good pile of cash as a bonus. Post-CU, that will very often not be the case, it will be a choice between XP or cash (and only if the creature in question is lower level than you are, soloing your own level critters seems to be slow going).
I will have to give up my merchant tents outside of player cities as well, and relocate to city malls or a player house. Less convenient for my customers on Dantooine, but I've no other option. I get killed too often, maskscent/camo or not. If a Voritor Lizard breaks my maskscent, I'm dead before I have a chance to move my mouse (they are fast buggers).
Anyhoo, so much for the woes of the crafting profession
Crafting does not sell game subscriptions, combat and loot does
That's why we had a combat upgrade, which stiffed most of the non-crafting professions (mainly due to the level-based changes, but not exclusively). I'm sure there will be some changes down the line to make it easier for crafters to play their characters, but that is not a Dev priority, I'm sure.
The CU changed SWG from a 95% solo-play game into a 95% grouping game. As SOE found out in EQ2, group-only content is not good. Hence the fanfare in the last few months about the "solo-content" that has been added to the game. Sadly, it seems that the EQ2 and SWG team do not talk to each other. I'm sure that we will see a big announcement from the SWG team in a month or three regarding the "all new solo-content" that will be added to SWG
Originally posted by Lepidus There is a vocal opposition, but it is not as if the entire playerbase up and quit.
But it also didnt improve the numbers either did it? This is one part of your article I didnt understand. The CU was promised to bring back the people.
Yet now they (SOE and LA) see it isnt bringing back the people so they changed their canned response to "The numbers are getting to what they were before the CU hit." This way they make it sound like they got what they were working for and it was a complete success. And you fed right into it.
No matter how you read that article it shows clearly that the CU (no matter how liked by the current subscribers) was a complete and utter failure. And that you were down right lied too by SOE.
Personally I think the CU is neither here nor there. I didnt see an improvement or downgrade. Its now truely EQ in space. And thats fine. It was heading that way from the beginning. Wait let me rephrase. Its now truely EQ in Space: Jedi Wars.
I would love to see you guys pull SWG from your roster and no longer do any news stories about it. I would love to see other sites like Warcry and so on do the samething. "SWG is obviously the joke of the MMO community and will never ever live up to its true potential so lets just dump it now." Bet some real changes would happen then eh?

Nope, was a simple response to your question and an adequate comparison to the SWG commercials based on your question. If you didn't want your statement answered you shouldn't have put it on a forum. You asked it because you wanted people to speculate on it. My response to summarize was "so what if they were, what does it matter, how is that any different from any other commercial?" and apparently you didn't like that because I either didn't give the answer you want or I devalidated your attempt. As for calling into question your intellegence, whatever. As I have already said, if you can't handle someone debating you then I suggest you get off forums.
As for your speculations on who owns SWG, beleive what you want. Owning the software does not mean you own the game. It means just that, you own the software. If it was solely SOE's baby and LA's only connection was the word "Star Wars" then I highly doubt people like Haden Blackman and the current person that has responded to all the heat from the CU, which IS an LA representative would be the ones in the public eye. LA hired SOE to develop and maintain SWG because there was a long stretch where LA was incapable of doing their own in house development anymore and Sony Online was obviously an experienced entity in the market. I have no idea of the full business relation between the 2, I don't think either has ever shared it publically however SOE has made it clear that many of the decisions that have been made about the game are not up to them. As well as Lucas Arts being the public representative for the game outside the official forum.
Your link you shared doesn't really mean anything that I can see. It doesn't clearly say Sony owns anything, as a matter of fact it does go out of the way to put a summary of LA on it. If your trying to implicate that becuase its on Station Pass its SOE's, I think that would be a mistake. SWG was the last game published by SOE to make it to station pass, and it was quite awhile after. And before it happened there was no certainty it would actually ever be on Station Pass. That tells me an agreement had to be made between LA and SOE.
If I am wrong I am wrong, but you certainly haven't proven otherwise and your statements contradict ALOT of history that has already been established with the game. If you find anything more definitive please share it because it would be quite interesting to see how 2 plus years of statements of such are wrong and LA has nothing to do with it except rights to the Star Wars franchise.

In My opinion Swg changed because noobie whiners didnt like coming into the game with the vets having good chars.Im basing this on my own experience from another game i played and SWG. Take Ultima Online , i played that 6 years, In the beginning there was 1 land Felucca, and a very active pvp base and theifs anytime you wandered from the confines of town and the guards you took the risk of being killed and having your corpse looted or a theif getting close to you and stealing your nice new magic sword, noobies entering the game whined they were getting killed hence they made a noobie land called trammel. In Swg there was also a good number of Vets who had worked and refined their skill and hence could kill Rancors and krayt dragons, the noobies come into the game and hmmm that guy has 20mil credits and a house full of rares and super weapons but damn a mongbat just killed me .Hence a new CU based on grouping to get your xp and credits . I figured out in my first few months Swg didnt like their players chars making too much money, or being able to solo stuff.
As far as losing stuff to the cu, i had over 285 krayt advanced blaster power handlers ruined, some i had paid millions for in game credits to buy the tissues. My 3 accts are to date still active, only because no credit is given if i cancel now, but when the subscription time is up i will be done.Games are supposed to be fun, it lost that when i logged on to find stuff ruined and as a 12pt master weaponsmith , to be treated like garbage. Sorry im also bitter. I will take my business elsewhere. They could have worked out a better cu, and this wasnt just a cu, this was a massive overhaul of crafting professions as well, they should have just issued everyone generic weapons. I got the opinion " Your kinds not wanted here" " move along " thats what im doing.

Again, how does Travelocity.com compare to Star Wars Galaxies adds? Do they look the same? Do they sound the same? Do they have the same people in it? Are the two products even remotely alike? Is not William Shatner a paid spokesperson for Travelocity? Is Travelocity attempting to make Shatner look like a normal person who uses their service?
You tell me how its an "adequate comparison", seeing as I see ZERO connection. I asked it because I wondered about it.
Why would it matter? Because the people in the ad give the impression that they do indeed play the game. If they dont, then its disingenuous.

Is not the game software? Who owns the software? Who owns the franchise? Lucas Arts has control over the Star Wars CONTENT! Models, names, textures. These all cannot be in the game without Lucas Arts permission. Thats what it means to own the franchise. The code however is owned and operated by SoE. Even if Lucas Arts pulls the franchise from SoE tomarrow, SoE still owns the rights to the code, not Lucas Arts. All the coding was done in house at SoE, not Lucas Arts. Lucas Arts already has its money. SoE pays Lucas Arts to use the likeness of Star Wars characters, names, and other items that are recognized as Star Wars. Period.

well, a few people (Dinion & Keasil) from this thread have actually joined our server Tarquinas and can tell you all that our server population is definately on the rise. Our guild is growing rapidly. We had a blast last night taking down bases both pve & pvp!!
I have been playing since beta test of swg. I hated the CU at first. Now, I think that the game is better off, it is actually more fun to play. It takes skills rather than uber weapons to win fights. I am having more fun than I have had in a long time. The Sunrunner server is booming with new players. With all the veterans that left, there are now replacements. It's refreshing not to have those who were uber in the game. I actually had some uber stuff, and at first I was disappointed, but, I enjoy combat more now. Anyway, bottom line coming from a veteran player. I hated it at first, but it was a necessary change, as the game would have imploaded, with top heavy uber, and super rich players setting the market, and dominating all the spoils that should be open for all to enjoy. Nice job SOE!
I also have played SWG since beta. I now no longer have an account. I canceled my account 1 month after the CU. I tried to make it work for me, but it didnt work I like solo in a mmropg invirament sometimes. This new system left no choices even if you just wanted to be a crafter becouse its pointless now.
I thought about this the other day. as i was thinking how disapointed i am about SWG i loved it and played it for years and tried to be very loyal, my point is if they were going to make such a drastic change in game play to bring new players the should have done something not tried in MMORPG. like perma death no res you die you make a new charactor. that would elimnate the bully effect. Make a wanted board were you can place a bounty after you die with your money left in your bank account or something it would promote team play expecially if you were after someone who killed your friend get your buddies. and it would completly change the way you inter combat.
The first MMorpg that gets the balls to try this system will be hudge fast gains and to see how high you can build your charactor before he dies as people reach for power they can be ganged up on to destroy them if they get out of hand It creates its own missions. this type of system would be a big hit i only bring it up cus if people talk about it mabie it will happen sorry if its a little of subject but SWG made a drastic terrible choice and if they came back with a system like this i would go back yesterday as far as the cu now it sucks if you have no freinds in the game cus they all quit. your stuck solo-ing and nothing to solo against with no awards
Well Put I agree 110% i felt the same way now im looking for a game that was like swg was before someone eat bad mexican and crapped out the new SWG i still cant get the smell off my hard drive lol
anyone know of any good MMorpg that is close to the old SWG
Anyone knowing whats really happening in a MMORPG knows that perma death is not feasible. Because you DO die. Maybe because you lose connection. Maybe because you are load killed. Maybe because the front door bell or phone rings in real life. Or maybe because you made a mistake in game.
Deaths DO happen if you play a MMORPG. And perma death therefore means you lost months of playtime forever. And for the corp it means they will lose a subscriber and therefore money.
Have fun
Erillion
PS: I have neither a Jedi nor a Padawan and I am playing since summer 2003.
Originally posted by WindexofDoom This thread seems like a thread for people who want to bitch about how much they hate the game, but they cant do it on the SOE fourms cause they quit. I think the combat upgrade is great, armor rocks, and jedi arnt that good. People just wine cause they cant completly PWNZOR them
Actually we dont complain on the SOE forums because we cant. SOE knows if they allowed open complaints the forums would be SWAMPED. Because SWG is messed up.
Yah the CU was nice but where is all these millions of people SOE promised would return? Still waiting on these people. As yet my friends who quit returned only to quit 1 week later. Wow so that was what the CU did? Brought back the old players for one week? Um yah ok. The servers I play on are still ghost towns. The CU did nothing that it promised. Its nice but still a complete and utter failure no matter how you slice it.
Because the combat system wasnt what was ruining the game. Jedi were, are now, and always will be whats ruining the game. Even the players with jedi know this.
I have seen a single newb jedi with zero skill in PVP literally tear through whole groups of non-jedi PVP veterans. You can not have an alpha class in a game. Sorry but its impossible. And Jedi prove it.
Maybe SOE needs to stop wasting time coming up with new and interesting ways to lie to us and start working on the game. Possibly stop trying to murder the continuity with every patch and start making the game truly fun for eveyone and not just saber swinging yahoos whose only real purpose in the game is to advertise to new players everytime they pull that glowstick. "Oooh a jedi. I want to be one so I can guaruntee SOE a 6 month or more subscription".....feh!
They latched onto Revenge of the Sith in hopes it would bring players. All RotS brought was proof jedi masters can be shot down like the dogs they are.
Originally posted by kinglog123 ok what im about to say will probably make ppl mad or pissed whatever though I believe that the only people that dont like the CU are the TKM composite armor clones that used to be able to kill anything and now that you cant kill everything that comes in your path your pissed.
I actually went to the trouble of registering with this site just so I could respond to this post and tell you that you're wrong.
My character, which was active for almost two years, was a master dancer/master swordsman with some medic and scout. I loved SWG and played it non-stop. I dealt with the bugs and the frustrations. I even put up with the disrespect that SOE showed the "unique professions" they created (entertainers) because I still had fun.
The CU was the nail in the coffin. I cancelled while it was still on Test Center, after seeing firsthand how it would destroy the non-combat experience.
What SOE's CU did was completely invalidate my playstyle and that of thousands of others like me who enjoy playing a hybrid character. As a half entertainer, half combatant pre-CU I was no uber jedi-killer and rarely participated in PvP of any kind. However, I was able to hold my own in PvE and with a good group even participated in high end content like the Geo caves and the Corvette. Post-CU, forget it. If you're not a full combat template you have no chance. NONE. Thanks to the ridiculous character level system that was put into place, and the health bonuses that go to only combat professions, anyone who wants to play a hybrid is doomed. And if you were one of those folks who wanted to be pure crafter or entertainer, then your options are so severely limited as to make the game unplayable.
I was in the so-called "alpha" or "sandbox" test for the CU that never happened. That's right - they skipped us and went straight to Test Center. We told them that they were destroying non-combat play for no good reason. We presented ideas for fixing it. They ignored us. And I'm not even talking about the fact that they screwed up the entertainer game (took away mind wounds, took away mind buffs) at its very core, I'm just talking about the fact that they made non-combat chracters unplayable in a world that was suddenly unsurvivable without the all-mighty CL of 80.
SOE can bite me, frankly. I'll never give them another dime. Their lies about subscriber levels are hilarious. We all know from experience with our own guilds and groups of friends that at least 50% of the people we knew who played the game have quit, if not more. But the lies continue, and they always will, until LucasArts wises up and gives the SWG franchise to a company that cares and knows how to develop an MMO like NCSoft.

Forcing people to group with similar levels doesn't seem bad. Many MMOs do it. In fact, I'd say it was a staple of some of the older MMOs.
By the way, nice poll! Why does SWG suck? 1. Swg sucks (Is this for those that are so blinded by irrationality that they can't think of a reason?) 2. Devs suck (Oh no, wait, they can just use this option. ) So there we are. SWG either sucks because, it sucks, or it sucks because the devs suck.

Actually almost every change that has been implemented, including the CU, was originally asked for by players. Including JTL AND Rage of the Wookies. Granted they haven't been EXACTLY what players have asked for, because there were so many varied requests. But players asked for changes and the Devs delivered them.
Moral of the Story: Be careful what you ask for.

I don't see how you think it's "work". SWG isn't hard to play. There are 15 new players (real new players) in my guild right now. They all started about 2-3 weeks ago. All of them are already mastered in at least 1 profession and some of them have already finished their templates and are working on getting glowy. As far as grouping you are COMPLETELY full of it there. Anyone can group with anyone. A total noob can group with a CL80. Try again.

I'll agree the CU changed a bunch of resources and crafters have a legit gripe. As do doctors and, to a lesser extent, entertainers. Entertainers have been fixed. Crafters are getting tweaks and who knows what will ultimately happen with Docs. But yes, a lot of classes got the shaft from the CU but most of the changes have been fairly well recieved.

Actually, a BUNCH of people in my guild are folks who have come back to the game who had left PRE-CU. They like it better now than back when docs had god-buffs. They also like the fact that people group now. And, as mentioned before, you're full of it. Anyone can group with anyone. A CL1 utter noob can group witha CL80 and get xp just fine. It's FASTER with like-level group members but it's perfectly do-able to group with people far outside your level. And it's not much less xp either.

In your opinion. Strangely it would appear that most SWG players dissagree with you because the funny thing is that since the CU hit the servers are at all-time high populations. I have not seen them this high ever, and I've been playing for over a year. And I played in Beta and early release as well.
We understand, you don't like the CU. Move on to a new game and have fun there please. We'll see ya when you come crawling back because SWG is still the best MMO on the market.

I don't like the CU.
Kai
Do you think they will reactivate old accounts for a week or two some time soon?

Period.
Who developed the game? Says right there in the link.

http://support.lucasarts.com/trg/soeswg.htmwell, a few people (Dinion & Keasil) from this thread have actually joined our server Tarquinas and can tell you all that our server population is definately on the rise. Our guild is growing rapidly. We had a blast last night taking down bases both pve & pvp!!
I'm enjoying this game more now than ever.
Yea or nay to perma death please vote
Have fun

PS: I have neither a Jedi nor a Padawan and I am playing since summer 2003.
This thread seems like a thread for people who want to bitch about how much they hate the game, but they cant do it on the SOE fourms cause they quit.
Kai
(Edited to fix style tags)
FIRST OF ALL, GENERAL GREVIOUS WAS NOT A ROBOT, HE WAS A CYBORG !!!!!
SECOND OF ALL, THE DEVELOPERS NEVER LISTEN TO THE PLAYERS AND IM SORRY BUT THE CU SUCKS BIG BALLS. THE GAME IS NOT FUN, ITS FRUSTRATING WORK AND FORCING PEOPLE TO GROUP WITH SIMILAR LVL PLAYERS BLAH BLAH BLAH THE LIST OF RANTS GOES ON AND ON. THE CU DESTROYED THE GAME FOR MANY, ESPECIALY THOSE WHO WORKED HARD ON CRAFTING AND HAD MANY QUAILITY ITEMS IN STORAGE. THE GAME SUCKS.... I DONT PLAY ANYMORE AND NEITHER DO MOST PEOPLE WHO STARTED BACK WHEN IT WAS RELEASED. SOE COULD HAVE MADE SWG SO AWSOME BUT THE DEVS HAVE LITTLE CLUE. THE ONLY REASON PEOPLE STAY IS BECAUSE THEY MAKE THEIR OWN FUN WITH EACH OTHER. (JEDI VS BOUNTY HUNTER IS THE ONLY FUN)

By the way, nice poll!
Why does SWG suck?
1. Swg sucks (Is this for those that are so blinded by irrationality that they can't think of a reason?)
2. Devs suck (Oh no, wait, they can just use this option. )
So there we are. SWG either sucks because, it sucks, or it sucks because the devs suck.
It seems everything 'sucks' nowadays.
Next time don't shout it with caps and I may actually read what you have to say.

Absolutely correct. He was a Cyborg.
