That specific gameplay formula will never have the same level of success it had the fist time around. People want something different, whether they know it now or not. Now THERE's a sweeping generalization for you! lol
Sure, you never get back that initial bliss when you first started playing MMO's and literally everything was new and exciting.
But then again, it's also not the case that the vast majority of MMO gamers have developed a burnout or antipathy towards themepark gameplay. People want something different, but they also want the same, things that fall within their comfort zone, and the extent of 'something different' varies from one person to the next. For some it's already different enough when it's another MMO that has a different world setting, visuals, and leveling experience.
After all, if people really needed something different quickly and all the time, then why would the majority have been playing the same themepark styled MMO's for all those years, and still play it, one themepark MMO or another? Or other examples, why would procedural law firm or cop tv shows still be majorly popular to the majority of people even after years, no decades, of them with not that much change to their format?
When you look at people in general, you'll see that they want something different and varied but also or even more they want things to stay roughly the same as long as it stays within their comfort zone. Only the mix of wanting something different and wanting things to stay the same is different from one person to another.

One analyst firm was straight up unimpressed with the game stating:
“Despite promises from EA/Bioware that the title represents a major step forward in MMO design, what we saw was essentially a World of Warcraft clone with Star Wars character skins and the Bioware RPG nice/nasty dialogue tree mechanism bolted on for non-player character conversations.”
Creutz also described the PC game’s visuals as “competent but hardly breathtaking,” but makes allowances for the landscape in which the demo was set. “Granted, we were playing in a desert area, so other areas may be more impressive-looking… on the other hand wequestion why EA chose a desert level to showcase the title.”

Sounds like it will be good for Star Wars fans, but a lot more of the same. What do you guys take from this?
Why make a separate thread for one hands-on impression when theres already a thread for that very purpose?

After reading through some of your previous posts I see why now.
exactly what I wrote a few comments up lol. I think it's just easier to post the negative and jump on the bandwagon when up against the loosing battle of the more overwhelming number of positive impressions.
If you were expecting some kind of FPS style or revolutionary combat system ala GW2 then you haven't been following what the devs said.
They clearly stated they weren't trying to completely change how MMOs worked, in their eyes, The combat was fine, exploration is fine (as we see they do give rewards for goig off the beaten path), and the general structure is okay.
The one thing they felt MMORPG are weak on is the one that contributes to the last 3 letters. RPG, they felt nearly all MMOs are weak on the story and how you interact with that story.
They felt there is no interaction within the story, your basically doing exactly what your told and thus most skip it.
This they have shown to be a major improvement on the traditional quest system, of which i think quite a few people are brushing off as some kind of fluff feature. While quests may have been in other MMOs because it doesn't effect your game play. They are just excuses to kill X creature to lull you into doing that with some text as context. Here it is quite different. You still kill X, go to Y interact with Z, you can choose how the quest takes place. Which of X do you fight, which of Y do you travel to, and which of X do you interact with.
Giving the player at least some control over the questing mechanic is quite a innovation and seeing as you'll be doing just that a good bit of time, it's hardly fluff as you'll be encountering it and playing with it for a good portion of your time.
as for the kill sand people quest, that isn't part of the main story line and is completely optional, they stated before this is the optional quest you pick up from being near people or killing X creatures as some people like those types of quest.
If you focus just on the combat, your not going to find a whole lot new, other then the duck and cover system that is.
It's really everywhere else that is interesting.

Bioware devs talking about combat and how great, heroic its going to be. Sadly E3 didnt show any of this. Especially the live stream they did.
This is one reason why many were underimpressed with this years E3 showing of SWTOR. The Deves themselves in many vid posts have hyped this game. As the youtube vid I linked shows. But from this video is also from a game demo they built to show off the game, not the game itself. This doesnt mean the game wont be a commercial success, but the devs need to slow down on the hype if they cant deliver

I agree that the streaming was a very bad idea because even if it was meant to show new content, it took away from just how good the graphics really are. Regardless, I want a JAWA companion and I want one NOW damit!!!!! lol
So many threads that hate on a game that isn't released yet and they have not played. If you are not impressed by the game videos and you think the game is going to suck why bother following its progress any further? You have already made up your mind that this game is a steaming pile of shit so why waste your time trying to convince other people to see your point of view? I am pretty sure at this stage of development not a whole lot is going to change to make you change your mind.
Personally I am just going to wait until I have actually played the game before I make a decision.
I have no worries about a negative preview, nor positive one. This one meh, I mean I just can't take the "it's like WOW" criticism seriously anymore. All this is, is tunnel vision.
All negativity is focused on popular buzzwords, the trinity, the instance, the phase, the raid, the grind... etc...
There's nothing informative in this sort of feeback, no offer of a better idea. It's just flat out tunnel vision, all anyone can see is WOW, I played wow for like a week tops, that's it since it's been released, I played tops in AOC maybe two months, never even hit 80. 78 to be exact.
LOTRO a week, why? Because there are plenty of other options, you don't have to play every game that releases in this genre, as a result burning yourself out on all of them. This is where the tunnel vision comes from, you've forced yourself through an MMO one to many times, now you can't play them.
The second I have second thoughts about logging in I don't, most of the time never again. The game and I didn't connect, most cases aesthetically, so it felt boring. That's why I almost hit end-game in AOC it wasn't boring until then. Basically the story was over and I wasn't interested in much else. Never had much to complain about with the game either.
Don't play games you don't like, just because it has one thing you do. That way you're not burning yourself out on those few aspects you like. Play full products that you like.
The few full packages I've liked were UO, DAOC and SWG, everything else I wouldn't allow myself to push through simply just to push through..I played those as long as I could and that's it. SWG being the longest from 03-05.

I think what bioware mean when they say 'heroic' combat is more the look of it than anything you actually do. There are good videos on Youtube highlighting how the combat and animations work in comparison to other MMOs, just seeing lightsabers clash against each other and deflect blaster bolts from all directions is quite a step up from most MMOs with their you attack then I'll attack animations.
This is a good video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGB9aoum9a4 and it's quite sad how sites are ignoring the fact that Bioware are totally over hauling one aspect of mmoRPGs. it's the class stories, full VO, cinematic story telling, multi player dialogue, companions and story decisions you can't reload that have people excited.
Sounds like E3 did more harm than good for them. Sad because people expect better from a popular developer.
Some people see negatives, others see positives, not everyone likes the same thing.
Is this a new concept or something? There are just as many positive impressions and experiences from E3 as there are negatives, different strokes much?
Every new thread I read on this cesspit of a forum inches me a step closer to never returning here. I must be some kind of twisted masochist to subject myself to this garbage.
Toward the topic of this article, specifically the line about "promises".
Finally a journalist understands, that might be because this guy actually play's MMO's.
Gameinformer " According to the developer, there are four major tenants of the role-playing game experience: exploration, progression, combat, and story. As BioWare tells it, MMOs have already mastered the first three, but they’ve always put story on the backburner.
In other words, BioWare will not be significantly changing the core style of MMO gameplay that has been refined and popularized with titles like EverQuest and World of Warcraft.".

Its a tough crowd here, but its worth it. It's like a challenge..like the one I have with myself not to eat Peanut Butter with a spoon before bed lol. It comes in waves. You are just catching the troll wave right now. However, there is often some really good info that is posted even before it makes its way to the official forums. I find the articles at this website have greatly improved and often lead to some really good discussions. Also, sometimes you'll get those beta keys and such..like with the VIP I got with Rift that allowed me to save myself $50. Don't let a thread of a negative review trouble you. This particular article is negative, but if you weed through the 'cesspit' lol, you'll see some really good stuff to keep you interested in what the game is all about.
Is it just me or every topic which is full of negativity regarding SWTOR has TERA and GW2 fans waiting to fan the fire? at first i thought it was coincidence but now it has become a pattern. I understand dilemma of Tera fans since it is not doing so good financially in Korea and servers merged down to 15 from 37 but why do GW2 fans feel so threatned by SWTOR? two completely different MMOS for two completely different fan base.
They've pretty much ruled out an open Beta I'm afraid, I guess when you have over a million people signing up to get into closed beta you don't need anyone else for stress testing.
Star Wars fans are gonna eat it up and spit it out after a month or so when the flavor is gone. People are going to play this because it's Star Wars and Bioware is making it....and that's pretty much it. The game will likely be a fun ride the first time through to the end, but I really don't see this game having any kind of staying power at all.
I'm slowly starting to realize that Themepark MMOs are by design super fun right away in order to hook players in, but you level up so damn fast, people hit the raid-grind wall and lose interest. If devs are looking for long-term subs for their titles, they may want to start looking at more Sandbox-type designs. At least for me, I find myself playing a lot longer if I feel more invested in a character that took longer to develop than a game that lets you cap an Alt monthly.
Gotta love this guy. Talks about how TOR is not going to have any replayablitity...im pretty sure when every class and each faction has different storys and ways of playing that people are going to want to replay over and over again...WoW players make alts all the time and there is no replayablity, besides having a different class. TOR has about 16 different storys you can have that many people are going to be wanting to experince. 4 classes, 2 factions, plus if you take the speciality class or whatever its called. Plus every action you make changes the outcome of your story. Pretty much its like goosebumps choose your own adventure on crack and you cant just flip back to the beggining if you dont like the outcome...lol Im pretty sure by the end of 2012 about 4 million active accounts will be around. About 2 million from people who have been wanting to play this game for years and the other 2 million that are disappointed with Guild Wars...as most were when they played the first one.

I've been wondering that for awhile. I have no interest in GW2 what-so-ever. I'm playing this game because it's the continuation of a great game, only to the next level. I don't want it to be like SWG, EVE,or any of the other crap MMOs which die hards here try and spin as gold. I dang sure don't want the combat to be a first person shooter because I HATE FPS games.

Why so people can just get their fill for free? Which has been the case for a few years now. Well no. Just simply have a weekend beta with stress testing and thats it. TBH I doubt any server could withstand TOR's open beta stress test . It would buckle and die a few seconds after launch. Never to work again. But the experience at release will be the same as in an open beta. Or possible worse, if there is no testing. This is part of the reason the game has recieved some negative comments from certain folks. They are doing what most MMO devs have been doing, "innovate" in only very few aspects of the game. Look at Rift, they only really bring something "fresh" with the Rifts(and imo a bit with the classes) and the rest is basically the same with some variants mixed in. SWTOR are doing the same thing but with the story, the rest is MMO 101....
This game for me will probably be a really good single player RPG but I probably won't stick around for the MMO aspect of it. One thing to note is that in that same article the journalist mentions this right before that quote:
"During a presentation before my hands-on time with The Old Republic, BioWare stuck to its company line about how this will be a “genre-changing” MMO, but for the first time in my experience, they broke down what they mean"
Notice how they say its a "genre-changing" MMO. Those are bold claims when you are basically just changing the way story is presented in an MMO (which is actually like an RPG). For that matter I would also say Rift is "genre-changing", this is one of the things I have problems with. Don't sell it as a "next step" in mmo's if its really probably not (my opinion). Although I know this is more of a marketing gimmick than anything else.
E3 felt rushed for Bioware, I honeslty believe they were preparing to announce a release date and instead are continuing the stand off with blizzard (sorry GW 2 fans (me included) but its blizzard not Anet that are the "competition"). Basically I think they will likely go for a snap release at this rate, the longer blizzard hold off content to try and douse ToRs fire the more people will become fed up and leave for ToR when it comes.
Its marketing sadly, though E3 did show a few minor bugs that hopefully all this time will allow them to squash.

Also, I think some gamers take things a little too seriously.
To a "gamer" this might not be heroic combat. To the casual player or star wars fan they might find the spectacle of the whole thing to be "heroic".
Just like a Theme Park might have some moniker for a ride that implies it's scary, challenging it's "to the max". Such as "Insanity".
However, a real thrill seeker might scoff at a ride named "insanity" when they are putting on wing suits and jumping off of cliffs:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttz5oPpF1Js
So it's essentialy very nerdy to argue the merits of "heroic combat" when the term probably wasn't aimed at the people who have issue with it.
