John Riccitiello: "High-scale beta at the end of June."

FdzzaiglFdzzaigl Member UncommonPosts: 2,433

As in the title, John Riccitiello, the CEO of EA, just announced TOR switching to a "high-scale beta" at the end of June.

Currently the game is in a "mid-scale beta" according to him.

I am a high scale beta tester!

Say hello, To the things you've left behind. They are more a part of your life now that you can't touch them.

Hopefully they take the best computers....If thats the only thing they are going by then i should be in no problem. If not then hopefully they do it by people who have been on their site the longest because i have been on the SWTOR site for about 4 years now...Please please give me beta!!!.

  • well during an E3 interview, James ohlen mentioned that they had just let in a new group of testers and that the group was about 1000 people.  so if that is mid scale i wonder how big a high scale beta would be

edit: oh scale as in computer specs or amount of people?

They won't pick by "Best Computers".  If they even look at computer stats, they'll be going for the widest variety of computers, wanting hardware from both ends of the spectrum in order to make sure that the game runs well on the largest number of computers possible.

I took summer semester off, and this fall is going to be crazy, so I'd REALLY love the chance to get some beta time in before that.  And as much as I'm looking forward to this game, I will NOT preorder until I can try it.

    "Scale" means a proportion.

So high scale means of higher proportion, or more people.

Since they're already allowing people to test the high-level content, it's unlikely to mean something else.

Hmm lets see I applied for beta maybe four years ago, maybe five, it's been a long time.  Here's hoping they finally let me in!

No luck, but 4-5 years is overdoing it.

They started taking applications in september 2009...

Maybe 5k-10k... But the important question is...when will open beta start? If they plan to have an open beta.

They hinted at not having an open beta but just a large scale closed beta.

  • bioware themselves aren't willing to comment on it, it seems

    http://darthhater.com/2011/06/14/EA-William-Blair-Growth-Conference/

Darth Hater contacted BioWare for comment, and they stated "game testing is ongoing."

regarding open beta, while this is second hand from a conversation at the e3 meet and greet, it is from one of the more knowledgable members of the community and has not been refuted by David Bass(the community manager in charge of dealing with guilds and fansites), which is who the conversation was with. so take from it what you will

http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=340697 its in the second post of the thread

When talking with David Bass, I asked him if he could clarify on what Daniel Erickson meant regarding open beta. To make a long conversation short, he basically said that they are not planning on doing what people consider a traditional open beta. He said that the hype and buzz surrounding the game is far greater than what most MMOs get pre-launch. For a game like Rift, the open beta helped it to generate a lot of hype, which was productive for it. For TOR, David said, that isn't necessary and isn't productive.

He also stated that with well over a million people signed up on this site, you cannot realistically have one test server and just suddenly open up the game to the general public before launch. That's not stressing a server, that's putting a bullet in it's head. So they will want to stress the test server and will definitely fill it to capacity. He didn't go into details how to get into this stress test prior to launch, but my guess is it will have to do with pre-orders possibly. I asked him what kind of player numbers we were talking about, but he couldn't give me a number. It will definitely be well into the thousands though.

I think it could officially be a closed beta. But I guess people that preorder the game or perhaps only people that preorder collectors edition will get a beta key. Its good for them and will help them sell more boxes. Perhaps there will also be a head start...

My PC was top of the line when I signed up for the beta and it tested it...2 years ago.  They can't take that data seriously at this point.  So many people have most likely upgraded between now and then.  Can you update your system specs on the official site?  I can't tell here from work.

Either way, I hope I get in.  I beta tested SWG for about 5 years...

I hope your right, worst thing they could do is chose their beta applicants based on the best machines, heck, it might make more sense to pick largely from "the bottom" instead.

But I agree, a broad spectrum approach would be the most sensible approach now.

But with this announcement, I'm feeling more comfortable with 2011 date predictions.

I have beta tested quite a few games and have submitted my fair share of reports. However, this time around, I am not in a rush to beta test SW:TOR. I would love to have the chance to beta test it and would welcome it, but I also would like to experience the stories that Bioware has been so vocal about when the game is finally released.

So if I get the invite, hell yeah I am testing. If not, no worries.

I dont think average MMO-players use the latest high end computers. If you have a 2 years old top of the line PC its probably still better than what the normal and expected SWTOR player will use.  So I dont think you need to upgrade to get invited to beta or to be able to play.

     Not...gonna...happen

I do agree with how you and the other poster believes they should choose applicants least in relation to their pc specs.  Although I would imagine most companies go for a broad spectrum of applicants pc hardware wise.
