My favorite dragon is Lofwyr, the evil CEO of Pseudo-Krupp in Shadowrun.
Now that's an MMO waiting to be made. And it's been a very long wait. I'm looking forward to World of Darkness, but I'd take Shadowrun over WoD any day. Although having both wouldn't hurt my feelings, either.
Both good RPGs, though DDO and Champions Online both show that basing an MMO after an RPG isn't a guaranteed recipe for success.
Personally, I would flog somebody to death with their own shoelaces if somebody would just make an Artesia based MMO... though it's really a comic first and a P&P RPG second...
Just creating P&P characters alone was endlessly amusing, and I'd love to play an MMO where I can end up with origin stories like 'Got addicted to coffee after losing large amount of kingdom's tax money, due to being upset over girlfriend cheating on me with my father (... and then my mother the next year. < )'. :<
I've seen people with a straight face accuse other games of stealing races from World of Warcraft, and listing 'human' in the list of races that were ripped off.
Well, whether he's serious or not, my comment still stands! <
LOL, I am pretty sure they were sarcastic as well, or possibly high on drugs. Considering Wows original races I am pretty sure no one would rip them off.
Dragons are very interesting since unlike any other fantasy race (except ghost if you call that a race) they actually excist in mythology from all over the world. Maybe it is from dinosaur fossiles or maybe it is something in the human psyche but there is a reason they are the most famous one (of course I have one tatooed on my shoulder so I might be partial).
Out Norse dragons usually didn't have wings even if Fafnír had and were called "lindorms", they were guarding treasure tombs and in some old Norse tales the dead in battle are guarded by a giand dragon while fighting an eternal war.... Slightly older tale than Valhalla.
Oh - come on now! Blue people from outer space with hooves and giant lizard tails who speak with something of an Eastern European accent but dance like Indians? Who WON'T be ripping that off?
Plus - a cursory examination of the WoW races will prove that the male and female versions have completely different skeletal structures, proving that they are actually not even the same species! So WoW actually has (edit) 24!!!! (/edit) playable races, a design model that I'm sure will be adapted by many games once they realize the brilliance of the concept!
As for dragons I agree that they really aren't that scary in mmo's. An mmo would do well to use a dragon as a main boss and kind of shroud the whole story in mystery and terror leading up to the point at which you fight him, and it would be nice if the fight was something long and difficult that you had to use your brain for and not just tank and spank.
I have a feeling that Rift's Hammerknell is going to be pretty amazing as a whole, but whether the dragon will be truly epic might be another story.
I was pleasantly surprised when I went from Apprentice to full 5 star Elite in under 2 months. I was pleasantly surprised again when I went from Elite to just barely Hardcore in 2 weeks. Apprentice, here I come!
Dragons are okay. I don't know if they should be the be all end all of games...everything leads up to...the dragon.
I prefer a more dragon heart type thing. Sure dragons are powerful and some are dangerous, but the real danger is a ruling king or some such. Make the final boss trying to overthrow the bad guy and almost succeeding with him leaving some of his jewels behind for you to loot (this allows you to repeat it for end-game).
Like i said i'm okay with dragons but i'm not particularly okay with them always being the end problem. Lots of games do this and i'd prefer something else to be the end problem. Like i stated, a king or dynasty you have to overthrow or something would be cool.
Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.
Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.
There needs to be more playable dragons. I mean seriously, who wouldn't want to play as one and rip shit up?
Hell, it would probably be worth being the big bad if you get to play as one. See how long you could survive before generic-fantasy-humanoid race #337 comes for your hide.

How dare you?!
You bring up one of my favorite characters in a roleplaying game while simultaneously reminding me that I cannot have a Shadowrun MMO. Now I'm off to design a new arcology.
It is a double-edged sword for ArenaNet to have chosen the iconic fantasy creature for their Big Bads. Fantasy fans can relate as dragons appear nearly everywhere, but the mighty ur-lizards have fallen from their original status to one of loot and sword fodder in so many games. Even the original Guild Wars had players defeating a dragon as a meager bonus. Still, the dragon has at least always retained some semblance of power over other common foes. Dragons are usually a little more special than the average kobold or skritt. ArenaNet wants to return the dragon to its place of power as megalithic foes in Guild Wars 2.
It's strange, because just last night I was watching, How To Train Your Dragon, and I wished there was a decent dragon game. I think an entire game based around dragons, flying mounted combat, could potentially be very fun.
I don't mind dragons in general, I'm just sick of them being the most powerful beings or second to the gods. If they aren't the gods it is some norse like god or an elf like god...just sick of it, I wish fantasy didn't equal norse/germanic fairy tale stuff, as 99% of western mmos are that.
"Great minds talk about ideas, average minds talk about events, and small minds talk about people." - Eleanor Roosevelt "Americans used to roar like lions for liberty; now we bleat like sheep for security." -Norman Vincent Peale
I don't think I'd be so bored of dragons if they didn't appear everywhurr.
I mean sure, elves and orcs are redundant too, but at least most games seem to put at least something of a spin on them. When it comes to dragons, it's always the big bad evil and when you've gone through 4 or 5 MMOs in the past half-decade that have all featured dragons as the primary antagonists, you have to ask what else is there that can be done?
Some friendly dragons, maybe? I rather enjoyed EQ1's patron dragons for the Drakkin in Serpent's Spine. In fact the whole political intrigue going on between all the dragons in Norrath is what kept them interesting as an enemy. When they're just a gigantic lizard of chaos, it gets a little stale.
That said, I do love ginormous enemies and I'm happy enough with ANet's dragons. Trion and Blizzard on the other hand...meh.
I would like to see a game where the "big bads" were inspired by the Lovecraftian Cthulhu mythos. So they would be these extradimensional, unspeakably evil, incomprehensibly powerful, and extremely alien beings that have a cult of fanatic followers around them.
You probably could never fight the "actual" big bad because it is so insanely powerful, but you might fight some kind of aspect of it. Like if the monster's name was Ytorgx you would fight "The will of Ytorgx."

You know, the primary antagonists in Rift are these incomprehensible forces of chaos, each maintaining a domain of their own. Their true forms are unknowable, and what we fight of them may very well only be an "aspect".
An "aspect" that happens to come in the shape of a dragon.

IT's possible that TSW would have this. seems like the enemies are going that route of sorts. Especially with the anything is possible motto. Plus in *spoilers* Dreamfall the big bad was some kind of a gooish mass called the undreaming *end spoiler* So it's entirely possible with what happened in Dreamfall that the big bad could be something other then a dragon in that game, one can only hope.

Not really. But I am sick of big boobed girls in schoolgirl uniforms with oversized eyes and blue hair and everything Manga/Anime style. Everyone has their taste.

LOL, ironic .
Still, I don't think that dragons satisfy the "extremely alien" part that is normally included in the Cthulhu mythos. Lovecraftian monsters are usually amorphous which helps reinforce the whole "unknowable evil" thing since once you give something a shape, it becomes more concrete.

Now THAT should be a raid boss .
Miki's left breast attacks you and hits for 999 damage!

Good day sir...
I said Good day.
Speaking of dragons, you guys should read this blog post: http://www.killtenrats.com/2011/06/09/gw2-alpha-predators/
I'm tired of fighting dragons, but I'll never get tired of flying on one, and I would love to play as one.
Since I don't raid I guess I have not been oversaturated with dragons.
But I can see those of you who run the same content over and over and over and over and over and over could get sick of seeing the same ol' crap.
It's strange, because just last night I was watching, How To Train Your Dragon, and I wished there was a decent dragon game. I think an entire game based around dragons, flying mounted combat, could potentially be very fun.
Dragons are cool. Hopefuly CCP will add some dragons in the next expansion.

I could go for the rest of my life without seeing/hearing about another dragon, orc, dwarf, or fireball.
I would still like to hear about gelatinous cubes from time to time though
Dragons are cool and all, but I feel you OP.

Dragons.
Ninja.
Vampires.
Zombies.
Bored rigid of them all tbh.

My friend has a bearded dragon. It looks cool but it's boring as hell.
All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.
I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.
I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.
I don't hate much, but I hate Apple© with a passion. If Steve Jobs was alive, I would punch him in the face.

Yes, I'm burnt out on dragons . . . hahahaha! Get it? Burnt out?
Meh.
No, not sick of dragons.
And whats the point anyway, sick of dragons? everything has been done, many many times.
there wont be any new ideas anytime soon, games might get better over time but,
the concepts will allways be riding the coat tales of Tolkien & Gigax.
So you make dragons look like big red robot dogs & elves look like aliens & you know what? its still the same 'ol thing.
Not really. But I am sick of big boobed girls in schoolgirl uniforms with oversized eyes and blue hair and everything Manga/Anime style. Everyone has their taste.
