Eden Eternal: Threatening to Destroy All That Once Was

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Eden Eternal devs make no bones about the fact that they want to turn the "free to play" market upside down with Eden Eternal. In a new preview of the game, MMORPG.com's Adam Tingle takes a look at Eden Eternal to see how it's faring in its quest to be something new and exciting on the F2P horizon. Read on and then leave us your comments!

The truth of it all however is that these games aren’t usually worth the time and effort and in reality cost more than your average subscription-based game – but, as we run alongside fantasy with our gaming hobby our worlds begin to parallel: there is a great storm brewing in the east (or California) threatening to destroy all that once was: its name is Eden Eternal, and it is pulling all the punches.

Pretty awesome game. I agree with this article. Except you called it Earth Eternal in the last paragraph. I recommend trying this game out, and dont judge it by the screenshots. It's actually really fun.

Sounds interesting. Im dl'ing in the background here. But I'm having some difficulties understanding what really sets this game apart? Graphics are one thing - as long as the gfx are acceptable and suitable, it's not a major selling point for me (i.e. ffxiv). Is it a solo game in a mmorpg setting? is a "wow clone"? Why is it better than any other f2p game? Is it because of the cash shop being sublime? Does it have anything to do with the gameplay itself?

Truly shines amongst F2P titles, I've seen the most common argument against it, is the kiddie style graphics...but when you get into it there is some serious gaming to be had.

I've played EE and to be honest its just another generic korean grinder with nothing special to set it apart well maybe the fact u can change classes anytime when not in combat, the game plays like this, pick class, do quest at each town, turn in quests move to next zone, usually is 1-2 dungeon quest series too. Repeat over and over till max level then sit there with nothing to do since the only thing to do in EE is grind.

I found the combat quite boring due to a lack of skills and char customization. I'd honestly not reccomend the game to anyone, except maybe kids since the game is so brainless to play. I liked the game at first but by level 23 or so I started to get tired of how repetive it was getting and I went till lv 38 then quit.

This is just my opinion though, As I usually say try the game out and see what you think of it.

Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:

    A. Proven right (if something bad happens)

    or

    B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)

Either way, you can't lose! Try it out sometime!

    @Siveria: Thanks for your input.

@OP: I dont know what to think about your write up about this game. I cant really say it's informative. It's more alluring. You give some highlights, but you dont really mention any cons. What was the purpose of the article? Feels like it is to get people to try it out. Which of course isn't the worst thing you could suggest, but you might be more open about your motives in that case. It halfway sounded like a review, but it isn't, now is it?

Well... I've played Eden Eternal to level 35 currently, and while it is quite polished (no crashes so far, just some disconnections when the various channels get busy, during prime time), I can't really say that its that much different from the typical Asian grinder type game.

The graphics remind me of the kiddie focused style of free realms, and changing gear with in a given class doesn't change your characters appearence (I look the same at 35 as I did at 20 or so).  Sure, one can use various dyes, but the appearence within a given class remains the same (at least so far).  One can change weapons (I favor the two handed types for dps), and that does change the weapon image.

The cash shop has become a vital part of the game. Why? Because the higher your level is, the harsher the exp penalty for death becomes. Unless you have a cash shop item that prevents exp loss in your pack (one is consumed per death).  The cash shop health and mana pots are also superior. Not to mention safe crystals to prevent ones gear from breaking during upgrades, teleport gems to cut down on travel time, a mount (hog) thats a bit faster than the llama one gets at level 30.  At this point the cash shop is rather extensive (and likely to grow).

As I've often mentioned, I have no problems with cash shop games. In fact, if I enjoy the game, I make certain to use the cash shop, so the Dev's make a profit. But Eden Eternal, doesn't seem to have much more than limited appeal (unless one likes grinders).

Just tried it. My very first impression is:

    - This is a CHILDRENS game. It's not a game an adult gamer would really play. It's a la free realms.

    - The UI is clunky

    - Within the first 5 minutes I got stuck on a rock. I tried to see if there was any support functions in-game, but I couldnt find any. Luckily I could just "recall".

I would suggest a target audience of children: 7-12. And that is if only the cash shop is acceptable for younger audiences.

I can't figure out why people are hyping/loving this game so much

I gave it a fair try, and it was generic f2p korean MMO #34920884

Just because you have a multiclass system, that doesn't make your game any more fun. Gamers just really love to buy into gimmicks like that I guess

Really enjoying the gameplay and graphical style of this game.  The class/skill system allows the altaholic in me to maintain one character to support my reroll habit. I find that both customization and upgrading (cosmetically and stats) to be easy and the components are very accessible. The playerbase is friendly and the content provides, for me, a nice mix of solo and group combat. Graphically, it's a lot like Dragonica - a cartoony (cell shaded?) effect and a consistent look/feel to the game world.

The gameplay, game world, graphics, sound effects... everything seems very well done and, for whatever reason, I find it an amusing game to play. Been playing for a couple weeks and I think my highest class is level 16. The price of FREE also is a good selling point for me. :)

It's a fun game, but the gushing praise is a bit unfounded. There's nothing that separates it from other quest grinders with the exception of the class change, which is also done in other games (RoM, FR, etc). Don't get me wrong, I love the visual style and I play it on and off, it's pretty fun, but the article made it seem much greater than it is.

Aside from the class changing on a whim, it's the same as any other game. Get a quest, turn it in, level up. Repeat until level cap. The end.

As for cash shop, in addition to exp and +loot potions, there are also items to protect your gear during enhancement, allowing paying customers to get very high enhancement ratings on their gear that otherwise would be nearly impossible, due to item breaking rates rising quite high after a certain enhancement rating. It also sells the actual enhancement scrolls, though these do drop ingame as well.

However, there's no PvP, so I don't particularly mind when people end up overpowered in a PvE game. Just makes my dungeon groups that much smoother without having to spend any money myself.

Well -- in a lot of ways it is the FTP WoW...

IE -- it takes a lot of what is there, improves it, polishes it, makes it accessible, and adds a few novel things to the mix.

In essence the loot system is varied enough that one drop blue bow can be very different from another drop blue bow in the same level range and decent drops are obtainable enough that you can farm up an item if you feel the desire and items do drop for you to trade and buy items for yourself.

The item mall while offering items people will want are all tradable and trade at a level where if you do not buy anything off the item mall, you still can get enough of it with in game gold that you do not end up feeling underpowered.  Yes the death penalty is kind of harsh at 5% of the level (some might like this) but it can be halved if you are ressurrected (which ANYONE can do if they change to a priest class for a while and havent neglected them completely) and the flower things go for 15 gold about which while it is a sting as death should be isnt something you cant afford.  IE I havent bought thing one from the item mall and I am at the level cap.

The level cap isnt the end of the game.  You have a lot of classes you can level at the level cap so it isnt like a brick wall.  Plus it isnt massively hard to reach like most of the grind games.

There are enough classes to cover varied play-styles both solo and group and being able to switch from class to class means you do not have to do the same thing all the time.  Some classes really need their pets like illusionist and hunter.  There are purer forms of each that do things without a pet.  Some classes are very good at taking out the boss mobs and others are much better at taking out the lesser mobs rapidly and some kite multiple mobs at the same time but no class seems overpowered.  In essence they have class balance down even though the classes are very different from each other.

I'm playing it and it''s really awesome. Not a masterpiece, not a triple A game but a really fun MMO with great comminity. And what about class system? Really great.

I think it rates up there as much better than your generic F2P grinder.  In most of those games the grinding takes forever to level.  That is not the case here.  I think too many people toss out the term grinding these days.  Go play Lineage 2 if you want to see grinding.  I haven't spent more then 3 or 4 nights playing in a couple weeks and I have a level 30 character with level 27 classes for mage and priest.  If you are trying to max out every class then it will take you a while, but that should be a given.  Given how little I have played, it takes no time to level in this game.

The zones are repeatitive, and the skill use is mostly simple.  Just AE kill mobs and quest.  Each class has one primary AE ability, use it and abuse it.  The game isn't trying to be revolutionary.  It's just a fun way to spend an hour a two every so often.  The cell shading is very nicely done.  The town based quests hubs are very easily traversed.

What makes it different?  Player guild owned towns.  Change classes on the fly, and you don't need to store extra equipment in your inventory.  Your one character has slots for cloth, leather, and heavy armor.  Makes it much easier to multi-class if you want.  No other game has that option that I'm aware of.

To the person that looks the same at level 35 as they did at level 1.  You unlock "outfits" as you level up.  On your class roster screen you can change outfits.    I think at max level you have 5 outfits available to each class (maybe 6 can't remember.)  You can pick whatever outfit you want and then dye it different colors.  3 different dyes can be applied to an outfit.  Hats can be dyed seperately.  I have no issue with this, but I'm sure some do.

Treat it as a Diablo-lite dungeon crawler and  you might just enjoy it.  Go in expecting more and you will probably be disappointed.  In fact the map based layouts and limited skills make it very much diablo-esque.

Why?  What does join date reflect?

  • ZoeMcCloskeyZoeMcCloskey Member UncommonPosts: 1,372

You can see the join date of people on here.  It shows in the forums section and here you simply click on someones name and you can see.

I been thinking of trying this one if I get the free time, sounds good.

Yes I was aware of this, I am just curious what the poster above my post thinks the join dates would show him.  Considering join date to this site has very little to do with length of time playing MMOs, age, themepark vs sandbox preference, F2P vs P2P preference, first time visiting this site, etc.  Like I said I genuinely am curious why the poster is worried about join dates.

Well.....most of the posters in this thread have been here much much longer than Ramblebrain....so I don't see his point either.

Here's the forum link to this thread...http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/320194

    Downloading the game right now.

How exactly is this a children's game? If you're referring to the graphics then I'd have to assume you haven't seen much anime and that's what it's based around. If you don't like that, fine, but it doesn't mean it's for children.

It's not the hardest game in the world by any standard, but if that's what makes it seem for children then maybe you should try a few other games and maybe you'd realize difficulty does not translate into ages that you can enjoy a game.

Also, have you ever played WoW? If you have then I'm not sure how your argument could amount to anything more than ignorance towards anime. This game, at least at the lower levels, is, well... you could tell me that this was an anime skin for WoW and Blizz decided to revamp the class system and I'd be inclined to believe you.

That was a lot of words to say so little. You start off saying how the game is going to be so different yet never back up that claim with anything. If your only basis for this being a cut above the rest is the generic graphics and not so revolutionary class system I really don't know what to say to that.

Honestly if I didn't know any better I'd say this was a paid advertisement or PR release......Hopefully this fluff piece isn't what passes for a good article these days...

I just have to add that whatever people buy in the cash shops (EXP increase items, CP increase, potions, mounts, costumes, bags, boxes, etc) can all also be bought on the Auction House if somebody is selling it. I bought a few cash shop items for in game gold from the Auction House, and haven't spent a dime.

I feel the title to the artical is misleading.  I thought I'd read something about how Eden Eternal's micro-payments, was in someway, going to rock the gaming industry's profit model.

I am happy that, so far, Aeria has put in only a small handful of items that give people who pay real money an advantage such as the Legenary Armor set where stats increase as your avatar's level increases.

There is already a strong attempt of bot farming by gold sellers only weeks after open beta started however so far Aeria elminiates those accounts pretty quickly. The bot farmers can be found everywhere if you watch. This will lead to people (i.e. guilds) who buy gold to be uber and quickly kill my interest in such a game.

I enjoy the graphics of bright happy environs although I am not an anime fan.

It has been mentioned there is no PVP or GVG and while there is only one race to play, Human, the character creation interface has 5 more slots for additional races. I believe Aeria has just not released those functions yet. It will be interesting if those systems will really open this game up to meet its potential or if they fail and make the game fall on its face. I am wagering the PvP and GvG aspects of the game are where Aeria is going to make thier money selling items in the Item shop. Oh and I have yet to see a Raiding party made (group of parties) althought the interface has that option.

While moving around the game I get the sense there are plans for much more content. As seen for example by NPCs sitting in hidden places all over towns for no apparent reason.

Currently there are 3 servers. Rumored they will add servers every few months. Meaning you can join a new server when it opens and not be level 1 while everyone else is max level and items in auction houses aren't sold for billions of gold - a big turn off for any new sane player.

Each server has several channels (as in 9, 9 and 5) allowing for quick channel hopping to find unlaggy places to play. I find lag hits once in a while. But is usually caused by other players close by doing those graphically fancy spells.

As a tutor of new players in an attempt to build the guilds I am in I am finding may people have not looked at much of the features of the game. For example the Archive where you can collect trophies and uber items (for Achievment points - another game feature whose use is not yet exposed to open beta players)

There are about 5 or more sets of "fame". Mostly used to get special quests or make unique gear. Fame for armor, weapons, Fame for enchantments, Fame for crafting tools. Zones or regions have Reputation (same as fame basically)  to get trophies which you can collec to get more achivement points.

I'm finding many nuances previously not mentioned. Although many other games have them too I would say Eden Eternal is not so flat of gameplay some may lead you to believe.

Do you make an evasive mage or a big-damage-one shot mage, or a supportive mage, Deside to build your other classes same way or differently? Will you specialize in elemental protection or general protection. Will you focus on a party build or a solo-player build. Will you leverage speed or power, Take advantage of quirks in the game like givng your mage  bow (super fast attacker both magic and physical). have a boss killing build? a mob farming build? Will you team with anyone to finish your Guild Quest farming at turbo speed or only party with guildies or perhaps solo them for all the goodies?

Will you level all your classes at the same time or power level your character to max and then maybe level your other classes? Will you do the region SOS calls? Farm dungeons, Farm world bosses? Collect items from jars and chests for rare gear about each map? Do treasure maps?

What I am implying with all these questions is that Eden Eternal gives you many ways to play this free game. As opposed to a few limited ways. If you run through the maps with only doing the "story quests" the game will be shallow, well, that's because you played it shallow.

Although right after closed beta, Aeria recruited Game sages, other players with an appearance of authority, I no longer see the Game Masters or Game Sages online like I did fater launch. I had high hopes. Although to be honest, it is one game I had little need to ask questions or needed help I couldn't get from other players.

So far I find the community pretty fun, as is often common on launches. If Aeria keeps the GMs and GSs present ingame and online and kick or ban abusive players as they did with people who capitalized all there chat and such nonsence they community will continue to be fun.

To end this windy chatter. I don't think Eden Eternal threatens the gaming industries profit model. Although the lack of uber gear in item mall has kept me playing I don't yet see how Eden Eternal will pay for itself to the benefit of Aeria. After all how many people will spend enought money to pay for all the servers and services of the game by buying dye to dye thier avatars outfits a pretty color?

If the lack of uber gear in the item mall is a planned temporary thing, and such things will be sold to the public once the players invest their time to make new friends in this game then Eden Eternal will fit the "earn-a-quick-buck-for-the-short-term" profit model as is popular with basically all F2P games. Short-term here means Aeria knows poeple will leave this game for the lure of another "free" game, but that is part of the profit plan after all.

    That's my 215 cents worth.

color:white">There’s definitely a lot to do in this game for it to be just open-beta. What bothers me the most is people comparing every MMORPG to WoW. There was other MMORPG before WoW that was just as successful. Looking at graphics, some may assume this would be a kid’s game. That is not the case for this. Although the translation for the story-line needs some work, this is definitely a very good game for adults as well. Download it, have a blast because it’s an addicting game.
