I've always been a fan of Star Trek and I recently read some interesting things about Star Trek implementing some sort of 'Shooter Mode'. My question is... should I pick it up? Is it worth playing? I hear that it is horribly repetitive.
How is the population?
Are there RP servers?
How is the community?
Please answer as much as you can. If you are going to flame the game, tell me why and compare it to games you did like.
THANKS!

Honestly i would give it a shot i'm sure you can pick it up for next to nothing these days, I have played the game on and off since closed beta and enjoyed it, the game is what you make it for me it eventually gets a bit repetitive however with the addition of the foundry (create your own missions) i had a blast on my last return.
There is only 1 server for the game (same as champions) however it is instanced meaning when a certain number of players are in a zone the server creates a new zone for everyone to join
Population was not an issue any of the times i have returned to the game i have always found a great number of players in all systems when playing and the comminuty is great very helpful.
hope that helps

No!
Why?
If it were some random no-name game (as in not Star Trek)... no one on this earth would play it. The only thing hold people there is the fact that its star trek.
IMO - A game should be enjoyable no matter the name brand.
Has anyone played it recently? I've heard that it got A LOT better since release.
If you go into the game with little expectations it can be fun for a while. It does get very repetitive very quickly though. The population is surprisingly large and relativly helpful. There is a demo, try before you buy. My opinion is that it's worth picking up if you can get the client cheap. I find I can only play it in small doses.
Edit. Was playing last month, it is better than release but it's not there yet.
I vote NO !!!
Why ??
Cause as long as people keep supporting crap MMO's they will just keep making them for a quick profit.
Don't you dare touch this abomination that is an affront both gaming decency and the world of Star Trek. It's revolting.
"Gamers will no longer buy the argument that every MMO requires a subscription fee to offset server and bandwidth costs. It's not true you know it, and they know it." Jeff Strain, co-founder of ArenaNet, 2007
WTF? No subscription fee?
Explain what is so bad about it, please! Also what other game would you suggest instead? Besides WoW, Guild Wars, LOTRO, or any of the other mainstream MMOs. I've tried them all.
Look up... It's an Indie MMO that is truly the most ambitious, feature rich, adn rewarding FFA PVP I've ever played. Also there is a free trial.
"I am not in a server with Gankers...THEY ARE IN A SERVER WITH ME!!!"
Population is pretty high. Higher than I honestly expected when I first started. You can probably check that for youself with the short trial of the game.
Theres only 1 server for the game, like Eve online does. Plenty of Role players from my experience, and lots of RP fleets you can join.
Community is better than most, plenty of conversations and I had no problem when I needed to ask a question. Group members tend to be friendly.
I enjoyed playing through the game. Though it's true the game can feel a little repetitive at times, it's honestly not any worse than the quest grind you do in any other game. I would argue it does it slightly better than most current games given that your BO's chirp in now and then, and missions occasionally have plot-twists/surprises for you. I suppose you'd have to actually read quest text to care about that though. Missions alternating between space and ground combat also kept me more refreshed than other games.
Probably one of the biggest reasons I was able to enjoy it was because I could change the difficulty. If I had played STO on the default difficulty I probably would've hated it, Elite mode kept fights interesting and challenging, gave me a bigger sense of accomplishment, and rewarded me with better drops.
What I disliked the most about the game was the lack of need to group. Because missions scale to the amount of players in the group, everything was soloable even on elite difficulty. Fleet Actions were very fun and require groups, but there is just to few of them available.
I was so pumped about this game.
I was hoping for the whole experience with this mmo. On the ground encounters, talking to people, talking to aliens, puzzles, combat, searching, and all kinds of stuff. I was expecting ship combat and travelling from 3rd person and the captians chair. Finally I was expecting to feel like a captain of my whole crew.
I got in the beta and this game had none of that.
A huge mmo letdown. Ugh, just thinking about this game still makes me mad. Everyone I knew that actually bought the game when it released still are bitter. Such a crap producation. I can only hope that someday, someone else makes a run at this game and does it right.
I wouold give it another run if I could find a free trail of the game but I will check out that StarQuest that was mentioned in this thread.
I just looked up StarQuest Online and it appears to have some good elements. Maybe all that I am looking for in a space mmo, but the graphics are horrible.
I'll have to pass.
Don't do sto. I played and I grew bored very fast. If you like a lot of repetition go for it. The startship fights grew boring for me.

I am the biggest Trek Nerd out there, and I got tired of this game...
I really did try to like it... but it fails to live up to Trek...
Then there is the eyesores.... Uniformed officers dancing funky ckicken in a Dance hall... the C-Store Elite with herd of out of place pets, or the sea of endless Star Fleet Admirals...
It all depends on your expectations. If you, like me, expects an indepth game where you will be able to "live" in the Star Trek Universe and do all sorts of activities, where combat is only one, then forget about it. This game is NOT that game.
However if you expect to just play a space shooter by using Star Trek like elements and dont expect much of a Trekkie community then the game is fun, for a while. When I bought the game I had the first mindset, then when I realised that this game is not that, then I tried to have fun with the shooter aspect as much as I could. It lasted me about 3-4 weeks until I got bored and to this moment, 6 months later, I dont see any urge to pick it up again. The game is simply too shallow for me.

I would say...don't!!!!!
I tried it again after a few months.....regret it!

When will devs, and gamers, realise that if, in an MMORPG, everyone is a hero (or Star Fleet Admiral) the it completely loses its meaning and becomes just like any other foot soldier/peasant.

Yeah seriously...
I see waves of (out of character) admirals, and all their Galaxy Class starships with borg mods...
Everyone is an individual, just like everyone else.
Try the limited trial, and see if you are even interested. If you are, look around at your local gaming store's bargin bin, or online at Amazon.com or one of the digital download places. You should be able to find it somewhere for just a few dollars. For that small of a price you can try out the full game for thirty days, and cancel before that time is up if you don't like it.
"Oh my, how horrible, someone is criticizing a MMO. Oh yeah, that is what a forum is about, looking at both sides. You rather have to be critical of anything in this genre as of late because the track record of these major studios has just been appalling." -Ozmodan
Why am I not finding the STO trial option?
Just download the game and make a Cryptic account if you don't already have one. It's free to log in and play the game, but without a subscription only the endless trail is available.
I tried that already. It lets me log in, but at the bottom of the launcher it says "Account here, click here for details". Clicking takes me to the account manager where it says STO requires a retail purchase to play, buy it at the online store, etc, etc.
Google search shows all the trial info coming from 2010, nothing recently. Thinking they did away with it.
Yeah your right! Just tried to log in on my account and it was telling me I needed an active subsription. Loged in a few weeks ago to check something after my sub had run out with no problems, it just gave me the trial blurb. So this must be fairly recent. Sorry for the misinformation m8, had no idea.
Bummer ... Was really wanting to check the game out again. Haven't played it since right after release. Might just got ahead and throw the $15 in and give it a shot.
STO is not bad. I recently rejoined to see Season 4. Let me say a few things first:
1. The character creator is not that good...
2. The cryptic points are expensive...
But...the game is fun but you have to go all the way to the Starbase first. If you can't get to there your not giving this game a chance.
This game is not as demanding on players like CoH is. In my turn this time, I will be a content creator. I hope to create lots of Undine stories for the game.
The free trial has been deactivated for now while the new tutorial is being worked on. See also here, the new zones are being tested internally.
