I think what a lot of people are failing to realize here is....

Nobody fails to realize what GW2 is doing with underwater combat. We've been getting beat over the head with it for the past week. I think what some people fail to realize is not everybody thinks the underwater combat is amazing. Believe it or not, some of us have been playing video games for 30+ years and have played just about every type of game and major title. Im happy that youre super excited and I think its pretty cool too. But you gotta stop trying to convince people to be as excited as you. Its an exercise in futility.

This is a strange response. You think others of us haven't played video games for decades, too? Are we comparing GW2 with every game to be released, now, instead of merely acknowledging what it does that no other MMO does?

By all means, don't get excited about an MMO finally even trying to address the fact that more would change underwater than your ability to breathe, but to act like it's par for the course in the MMO world is disingenuous to say the least.

Thats what you got from that? All im saying is people shouldnt get defensive if someone else isnt as excited about a feature as they are. we all have different experiences and tastes with games. are you trying to turn that into an argument as well?

"Not excited by", fair enough, but you can't say that it isn't at least a new approach to underwater combat that we haven't seen before in an MMO. That's worth, if not excitement, at least interest. It's certainly not worth a scoff and a dismissive "this is nothing groundbreaking", which was what the original comment was.

You get a different set of skills, moves, weps when you go underwater. That is a pretty cool feature. It is a similar mechanic to having a new set of skills pop up when you go stealth or change forms. I personally dont think its a groundbreaking feature but that shouldnt even matter at this point. We are basically splitting adjectives here.

I agree we misundertood them. They propably didn't mean that GW2 is closer to sandbox.

I think people see this from the wrong angle.

There is the sandbox thing, a game is more sandboxy the more player created content it have. GW2 ain't a sandbox.

But there is also "Linear". In linear game You start with a boob quest and then do a whole bunch of questlines, usually in a certan order.

A 100% sandbox game would have only the basic mechanics and a large empty area, everything else like cities, farms and so on is player created.'

A 100% linear game have you start on a single quest and leave you at another quest where you then start to grind raid gear, you complete everything in a certain order.

GW2 is far from linear and a lot less linear than most other MMOs, but it isn't a sandbox because of that, it is a different thing we are talking about.

It have a little sandbox factor (say 5%) since the success or failure by players do have some impact on the gameworld but it is very little since players don't make the events themselves. So the thread should say: "Guildwars 2: Slightly more than a themepark and less linear than they use to be". Not as catchy though.

You can't have a 100% sandbox game, because then it wouldn't be a game anymore.  Pure sandbox requires pure freedom.

    Games require rules.

As close as you get to a pure sandbox is something like Second Life (Which isn't really a game, except when people use the sandbox abilities to make one), or something like a freeform RP writing forum where people aren't constrained to any particular specific thing.

Just by creating the basic mechanics, you've removed some player freedom, unless the basic mechanics are purely of a constructive nature (Like giving somebody a box of Legos)

Pretty much this. And to add to that, Id say that a good "sandbox" mmo has a strong, pre-existing "theme" that players build upon. I really like the term Sandpark that other members have been coining. I think that fits my preferred mmo playstyle pretty well.

UO=as close to sandbox as I have seen.  Not saying that that makes it good or bad but when it came out (what, 15 years ago?)  it was unique.  I am looking for that kind of experience in a game.  Nothing specific. Just unique.

GW2 is awaited with great anticipation by all my guildmates and myself.

We did not play the first one because we thought of it as not an MMORPG with its heavy focus on instances, at the time, when it launched, we were quiting Lineage II to be honnest in a quite upset mood vs NCSoft so part of the reason we did not try it was the bad experience associated with NCSoft and Lineage II.

But nowdays, after so many years of playing MMORPG's, we have come to a point where we can recognise just from what is being published if a game will appeal to our style or not (we knew AION would be a grind fest and did not even bother with it), and GW2 thus far stands out at the top as a game that we will enjoy greatly, learning that it is not being develloped by NCSoft is a huge bonus to our decision to play it and the excitment it is generating.

Many Cheers for GW2, hopefuly it will establish a new standard for all to follow and herald the next evolutionary step of the gerne's gameplay!

Keep it up guys and gals over at Arenanet, your doing Great!

GW2 is not being awaited with any anticipation at all as it is just the next in a long line of theme park EQ clone poorly done combat MMOs.

Developers need to get a clue.

The ignorance (or sarcasm, I can't tell) is strong with this one.

As far as I can tell, based on his posting history, this is how he feels about most MMOs.  from what I can tell, he supports Xyson, Darkfall, Mortal Online, and Planetside 2.

I used to TL;DR, but then I took a bullet point to the footnote.

And you're not allowed to go to the underwater areas until at least 30 minutes after you eat.

Yikes, no wonder he's an unhappy camper.  There isn't a decent game in that list.  Ouch.

Yeah a flooded basement does not a sandbox make. Still the game is looking to be damn fun reguardless.

I agree with the term "Themepark 2.0".

Guild Wars 2's bringing us a package of various features from previous themepark MMO's that, on their own, may have failed but when improved upon and put into a larger formula, may prove highly successful...

...sprinkled with the strengths of Arena Net's design philosophies, and goodies brought from the first game, this could definitely be more than just a themepark. But far from a sandbox, because it's definitely still a themepark styled game.

We're definitely getting more than "just another WoW clone" though. image
