Pre-CU SWG is what the future should have been. They screwed it up and they'll most likely never make a game that good ever again.

A lot of folks are still bitter toward SOE for the NGE. But, the truth is that SWG is actually a really good game right now. The skeleton dev team that is now SOE has done a remarkable job fixing the NGE fiasco. If I were to have to choose between a themepark Star Wars MMO and a sandbox Star Wars MMO....I am choosing SWG. It might be that I have sunk 6 years of my life in SWG, but that is how I would vote.
if you have never played SWG pre-CU I would be ok with this statement.

I moved on with the NGE disaster. Even with pre-CU gone, SWG is still better than most of the junk out there right now. Crafting is my thing, so to me SWG will always (even now) be the best crafting system ever. I was irrate at SOE just like everyone else, but I am glad I stuck with it. The current SWG team did a remarkable job fixing that NGE garbage.
SWG wouldn't be a threat. it was dead in 2006 when nge was dropped. Plus people don't like sandboxes anymore. they want their hands held and want to be told in every detail what to do. not to mention ToR brings current hardware and software into the picture. It would still be an overall better game for the simple fact, its Current.
Having never played either, and given the choice between only these two games, I find myself more interested in SWG in all honesty. I'm very sceptical about SWTOR now for one, and SWG seems to have more going on for it imo, more bang for the buck so to speak.
Reality of it is i'm never going to play either though, no point with SWG shutting down (wasn't really that interested to begin with), and SWTOR seems to have more cons than pros for me personally.
Ok, so here goes.... I see all kinds of threads and posts suggesting that one reason that SWG was closed because it was competition to SWTOR so they cancelled it (I thinks its Hooeey, but the thought is out there).
You're looking into the wrong reasoning, there is no competition, they just know TOR is going to be better at being a thempark than SWG is. SWG just doesn't cut it as a themepark IMO, those playing SWG now because they prefer the NGE, will have a much better themepark environment in TOR.
Those who stick around because they prefer the SB elements of SWG, won't be enough to make them money, F2P would only complicate things for them, they have no desire to put that much work into VG or SWG. I think it's absurd to think TOR has nothing to do with this though.
Oh as a themepark I pick TOR, as I to believe it will be a better TP experience.

If the original vision for Star Wars Galaxies was taken on again witha AAA+ budget and a team that would seriously dedicate themslves to making that vision come true (which the original game designers admit they failed at)... the game would trounce SW:TOR.
So i just got done playing the 14 day trail of SWG and i loved every second. Sure from what others say its not as good as it was when it released, but i truely felt apart of a universe. There is so much to do in there and what seems like so little time. The game was bold and had lots of mechanics and thats is somthing you never see anymore. But this being said it made me want to play TOR even more. TOR in itself is a completly different game based from the orginal single player game KOTOR (Knight of the old republic) I feel that it will be much more immersive and have the right aesthetics. Sure it may look cartoony but that will stay in stlye for years to come and visually wont look old or boreing. My only concern on TOR right now IS HOW BIG ARE THE ZONES. Other than that playing lots of anticipated games and most failing hard in the begining, I am worried for TOR but they know if they screw this up bad things will happen =P.
It's kinda tough. I love and always WILL love SWG, especially the older incarnations.
But I have LITERALLY done EVERYTHING in the game to death. There is not an ounce of content that I have not experienced at least once, and in most cases over and over again.
I could fill frieghters with the stuff I have collected over the years, on three accounts.
I'm really looking forward to SWTOR.....it's a virgin Star Wars game for me to plunder, and I'm literally giddy with the anticipation of it.
So...I would have to say SWTOR, just for the newness and potential of it.
Swg I hate some of the changes swg had over the years but the newer people working on swg fixed alot of stuff made the game fun again. Tor does not interst me at all due to the fact LA is in control LA is good movie maker bad at control of games.

No doubt about it. TOR is uninspired.
No other MMO has given the feelings that I felt when I saw the Gorax on Endor for the first time, fought a Krayt dragon with my guild for what seemed like forever, or avoiding the gas in the geonosian cave. People may have hated the NGE changes, but SWG still has more to offer than most MMO's today.
I cannot comment for SWTOR, as its not released. The best I can say for SWG was what it did uniquely, it did well (crafting/non-combat proffessions/housing). I hated the guts out of huge chunks of the game, but no one can deny that they were innovative.
As far as I am concerned SOE released SWG as an incomplete, buggy mess to begin with and never really even fixed that part. Then along came the NGE and CU. What was good in the previous game was destroyed then. So for me SWG died a long time ago. I'm more than happy to give BioWare a chance at Star Wars and see how well they do it. After all, they would have to design the game specifically to be WORSE than SWG to actually meet that level of horrid and so far I am not seeing that at all.
"If half of what you tell me is a lie, how can I believe any of it?"
I think I would probably still play Pre-NGE SWG over just about any MMO out there. It was my first MMO and I have yet to find anything to successfully fill the void left by the NGE. I loved the skill/class system, the space combat, the crafting, the sandbox world(and the fact that Jedi were a rare sight and took a great deal of work to become one).
That being said, I'm still greatly looking forward SWTOR without expecting any significant similarities to SWG.
PreCU owns against all other MMOs to date maybe except agains DAOC (realm vs realm). But if i had to choose between the piece of crap called FUNGE and SWTOR, most deff SWTOR and the game isnt even out yet.
I'd pick SWTOR. I played SWG when it was in beta but never really got into it, I was pretty bored. Surprising because I loved UO. I think I'm just more attracted to fantasy sandboxes though.
As far as SWTOR goes, I loved KOTOR, and it seems like SWTOR will have a lot of similarities.

Star Wars Galaxies, no question.
