Star Wars: The Old Republic: Story of the Week: Star Wars Makes Some Moves

BillMurphyBillMurphy Former Managing EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 4,565

The Story of the Week may be a no-brainer, but that doesn't stop Bill Murphy from chatting about it and recapping the events.  Star Wars: The Old Republic has its pre-order all lined up and ready for fanatical consumption, and it's definitely generating some buzz.

I feel a little silly even having to write this week’s SotW, because it’s not like anyone talked about anything else at all since Thursday morning.  But in case you haven’t heard, BioWare announced the pre-order details for Star Wars: The Old Republic.  They also told us that there will be some hefty beta test weekends this September.  They showered us in trailers, and told us that pre-order folks will be guaranteed to get into the game ahead of everyone else.  They even told us every little thing that was coming in the Collector’s Edition and they let us know that we’d have to sell a kidney for afford it (actually, $150’s not that bad when you look at the laundry list of included items).

Read more of our Story of the Week: Star Wars Makes Some Moves.

Try to be excellent to everyone you meet. You never know what someone else has seen or endured.

I have registered my DDE code and I am waiting impatiently :)

Have a sense of humor, no need to get ALL MODDY ! :) A Simpson's quote shouldn't be worth a warning. You are lucky anyone is bothering to read this rag.

yeah, I bought the CE. My bank account cried, but no regrets. I've enjoyed what I've seen and read so far and I feel like they'd have to do a lot (more) wrong to change my opinion.

I'm seeing the servers straining under the sheer weight of people trying to log-in when game time comes.  It's going to be like the Second Coming for KOTOR/Bioware fans.

*Hears the servers wires spark and sputter*

    "We just lost lateral control!"

    "Don't worry, she'll hold together."

    *Loud sparking and minor explosion*

    "Come on, baby, hold together."

No offence meant ('cause very nice on the reference), but how much of a nerd does it make me that I just know you got the last line wrong? image

I thought I might have got the last line wrong.  It was a 50/50 shot.  But at least it was in the spirit of thing! *laughs*

I think with Bioware pre configing the servers with the various guilds, it might be an smoother launch

Remember how long it took WoW to get enough servers up and running? I recall they were adding servers as fast as they could. I hope Bioware is ready for the onslaught!  I can already hear the bitching on the forums from those of you that bought the CE. It was great the first week but then they let the unwashed masses in week 2 and everything went to hell.  Maybe Bioware will rent/buy the unused servers from Blizzard.

Well if they sell 2 million units in the first week at $60 bucks a pop they will have made $120 mil easy. I think that's why ToR is priced way beyond normal, recup the development costs in boxes and the subs are pure profit. And that's not counting the $150 CEs or the $80 DEs. So yeah they have made their dev cost back with SEs, CEs,and DEs easy. If things pan out like that in the first week of launch.

  • mmoguy43mmoguy43 Member UncommonPosts: 2,770

Well, 1mil sales for the $150 CE still doesn't mean 150mil for Bioware/EA but it will be a lot none the less. Getting Gentle Giant to make 1mil statues is going to be an sizable expense along with the other stuff to produce and ship.

Must resist jedi mind control....must not spend 150.....must resist...to late.

*sigh* $150 is just so much for the average person.  But I just want the goodies lolol.

Or do I? BioWare ....the force is strong in you.

Have to admit - that was tempting.....

    About the launch:

"If you order pre-orders, it's first come, get it now to get in line for pre-orders because we are going to do a limited launch. Because of the big demand that we're having we are going to limited launch. So the sooner you get in, the sooner you'll play our game. Pass it along."

    Source.

God only knows how they'll deal when the floodgates open after all the pre-order people get in, though.

I admit money are economy are not my strong sides, but isn't there a mistake in this calculation, that $150 per box X 1 million boxes = black numbers?

From this $150 goes a certain share to Gentle Giant for the figurine. Then we have taxes and of course the entire hogwash of stuff, the Music CD the key-thingy, so from the $150 they will maybe not even get half of it as real profit. At least not the full price at all.

    Just saying.

EDIT: Aww shucks, MMOGUY43 was faster. ;)

Actually, if the 150 million covers all the tidbits and booklets and all that goes into creating the CE editions etc. Then it is pure cash inflow, minus some taxes. I'm quite sure that these costs are included in the estimated 150 million dollar budget.

Running costs are a whole other matter... How much does the server camp and support functionalities cost and making the updates etc. But it is quite safe to say that this game will be making a lot of dough for EA and Bioware...

Got me the Digital Deluxe Edition today. I have enough junk around the house already, so no need for the CE.

The Sith lose. One of the last Sith lords gets thrown down a big reactor shaft thousands of years after the game by the last Sith lord who then also dies. Like the animations though.

I got the standard edition. I was just not moved by the extras. At least not moved enough to shell out $150, even tho the in-game vendor was very tempting.

BTW, Dragon Age 2 on PC was also $60, so Bioware in general it seems is selling their PC games at the same price as console games, and not the currently standard $50 PC price.

At the moment the only known fact of game launch is it is before year end, the rumor mill says everything from the first week of november to the middle of august. The middle of august rumors claim that the september beta weekends are a smoke screne to keep blizzard from screwing with the launch which will come, much like the second coming, as a theif in the night.  While others say that beta weekends in september are really stress testing, and they intend to take the first half of october to fix anything that crops up so they launch at the early part of the holiday sales season. I personally am hoping for a mid to late september launch, screw the beta weekends. I felt that those alone killed rift.

The idea was to give you little hits of the game to make you want it all that much more. To me it made me want to shoot someone because all it did was annoy me. I get to play a bit, then I can't, then I can, then I can't. It's just a tease, and while some people get drawn in by that others get turned off. They should do maybe a one week beta, then bam beta ends and the head start waves get let in.

That's funny, I've always maintained the November 15th release date myself... I guess we'll see. I got my physical CE on order and have the code applied to my account, I'm ready to rock. 8)

Yah I preordered the CE but I'm a bit agitated that I have a preorder for a game that has a release date of TBA. Seriously, I have no idea when I'll get a return on my investment. On the bright side by the time they have a luanch date all the CEs will be sold so the truth is I had no choice. I'm very excited about the game but they'd better announce a release date or I'm going to throw an uber tissy fit rofl.

  • HyperbeamHyperbeam Member Posts: 124

I believe they answered toward release date being holiday 2011, as in thats what the're aiming ofr.

My guess is, if the September weekend stress tests go well we'll see a ramp up towards a release sooner then very late in the holiday season, (I'm assuming there bearing the preorders in mind for server pops btw).

I've ordered a standard and CE, (I'm doubting the CE I've ordered will actually come through tbh), so yeah can't wait really.  I'm intsalling KOTOR 1 and 2 again, gonna grab some other mods to pass the time :).
