Did people honestly forget about playable races being ONLY humanoid?

I remember making a joke post when all of the Rift hate was going strong about it not "innovating".   I think I said yeah, they even have the nerve to use the same old bilaterally symmetrical humanoid characters.  They should have made three legged four armed characters with skateboards for feet, now that would be innovation!!

Then this post.  I guess irony really is dead.  :)

Not that I would have any idea on how to implement them in the game (how would a Slith wield weapons?) but these are just a few of the more or less non-humanoid species I could find on Wookiepedia.

Dunno if you read those wikis, but the slith are extinct, the Iyra are shuned through the universe and the Slith are poor combatants that poison people with their body odor.

Not the best races for a mmo imo

Interesting, it sounds like it's likely we'll learn what happened to Revan after KotOR too.

Just... don't make me fight HK-47, that would absolutely break my heart, he must become my companion again.

    Races?  Really?

It's cool that the game can be both criticise for too much Story, and for not enough races--at the same time.  What's the purpose of another race, if not to explore the Story from a different direction?

Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.

My understanding though is that ...ahem species... choice has no impact on story, only the class choice does. I could be wrong here I don't follow the game that closely.  But my understanding is the individual stories are about class and not related to species, or sex (though the character VO changes for males or females obviously).

Most non-human races in star wars are humanoid.  The ones that aren't would just look stupid or out of place as playable characters.

No no, I was talking about player motivation for choosing a different race.

Why roll an elf instead of a human?  It's just a style choice, and seeing the game through a different set of "eyes".  But unless you're a serious immersive roleplayer, the choice of race is just a cosmetic thing.

Instead we get red and blue skinned humans and Twi-leks, thats it! Come on now guys, seriously with a budget of 150 mill, they could do the fans and the lore some justice and do some more intricate playable races.

Agreed. I would have liked to see a raft of preset iconic races on offer, and also a CoH style builder where I could make my own.

But then I would have gone own the route of allowing people to look like how they want like that game does as well, allowing character progression through slotting 'gems' rather then visible gear.

I hate the fact that I am only offered this tiny range of look-a-like races and cloned gear. It's unimaginative, lacks ambition,  and cheap.

It'sa shame they looked towards the wrong style of game for 'inspiration' for SWtoR imo. CoH in general would have made a better template for the game in terms of character development.

You wouldn't like SW:ToR unless they made it SWG2, everyone knows you don't like it, we've seen you say it countless times now. We get the point. You think games that release with "vision" but having every part of the game destroyed by bugs are better then ones that will release actually polished and finished, that's quite funny. :)

If you read the OP's post they are clearly using the term "humaniod" loosely. What they really appear to mean is that all of the species in the game look basically like humans. The real complaint I gather or at least my complaint is that this game keeps trying to claim to be "iconic" yet leaves out most of the iconic species. The cantina scene alone from ANH had more variety then SWTOR does.

Arcona, Shistavanen, Defel, Stennes, Siniteen, Advozse, Abyssin, Talz, Sakiyan, Gotals, M'iiyoom Onith, Qiraash, Lutrillia, Saurin, Morseerian, Snivvians, Rodian, Aqualish, Chadra-Fan, Devaron, Bith, Duros, Ranats, Ithorian, Nimbanese are all bipedal humanoid species that would have worked and this is just a list of those seen in the Cantina scene of ANH. That doesn't include Empire (best scene would be the Bounty Hunter scene at least they included Trandos for some odd reason. ) or RotJ (best scene would have been Jaba palace/skiff). Let alone the fact that crowd favorites like Wookiees, Bothans Mon Cals and plenty of others were overlooked for some rather mundane (aside from Chiss who supposedly had been hidden from the galaxy for most of its history (until BW retconned that).

And what is wrong with a "cosmetic" thing? Owning your character is one of the biggest draws of MMO's making them look just like you want, making them unique even (heaven forbid)...

I was just looking over the SWTOR offical Forums and apparently "The Developers will add more races at launch". And everyone excited because "They already have Models in the game for other races."

Again, is there where MMO's have brought us?

Where people lower their expectations completely and hope that they just magically pop in with the other races at a later date, come on, how many MMO's have you played where they have models in the game for multiple other lore based races that never make it in?

Anyone else disgusted with the slim difference in Races currently in TOR?

Well in the world of half assed themepark mmo's do you expect anything better?

I don't find this to be a problem at all personally.  The three races you name are only known races to someone with more than a passing interest in star wars, those races were never central to the main story told in star wars so I could see that being a reason to not go with those other races as well as other reasons mentioned by other folks in this post.

Actually, yes, I did forget that, because it is so low on the things I care about in an MMORPG.

Playing dress up isn't one of the prime appeal of MMO's, (for me) so I can roll with pretty much the standard looking humanoids.

I'm disgusted! I want to start out as a Hutt. A Hutt Jedi. A Hutt Jedi who can do a force flip 30 feet into the air with a backspin and tail swipe as he lands sending my foes into carbonite freezing upon impact.

Oh and lasers from my eyes and fireballs from my ass.

My request is well thought out and reasonable and I am appaled I cannot do this upon release, hell I want to do it NOW, right now. I am apalled and disgusted I cannot have whatever i want right now and NO I am not throwing a temper tantrum about it.

To Sum Up: Slimy Hutt, check. Jedi, Check. Jumping and slaying any enemy with my uber ninja powers, check. Lasers from eyes, check. Fireballs from ass, check. Posting my opinion online and insisting that everyone see my point or I'll throw myself on the floor kicking and screaming, check.

EVERY playable race that has multiple class options in a MMO is humanoid.  I thought we already had this argument?

It has to do with art assets (armor and clothing, etc) interacting with player models.  If one race doesn't have legs (lets say Naga in WoW, for example), they have to create a separate art file JUST for that race.  You've just doubled your files just for one particular race.  Its a time and cost issue, nothing more.

Some MMOs have non-humanoid races, but most (if not all) of them can only be one type of class, or use one type of gear.  I challenge you to look at the gear in games like that and show me they are not just recolors.

TL:DR version:  Stirring up an old argument (that really wasn't an argument to begin with) just to trash a game that you've never played is ridonkulous.  Go back to shooting 12 year olds in Black Ops, we don't want you here.
