Just recently when I played the Gabriel Knight games for the first time. Was bored one night and decided to buy them over at GOG.com. What really struck me was the fantastic writing, voice acting and memorable characters. I found the stories to be brilliant. Especially that of the second one. I had no clue I would become so captivated by the series.
Thank you for mentioning this. It brought back such great memories. I too loved that series. Make sure you play the Tex Murphy series too. Adventure games were my first real addiction and I played through soooooooo many. lol My favorite of the Gabriel Knight series was actually part 3 (part 3's story was very dark and foreboding), although I also found part 2, The Beast Within, VERY compelling and fun.
Not sure about that one. Maybe Oblivion, AoC, or Shadow of the Colossus. Also possibly Sins of a Solar Empire, or F.E.A.R. They all did different things for me, but each time I was amazed at the ways they managed to pull me into their worlds (except for Sins which was just flat out awe at some of the scraps I got into). Oblivion was really engaging tactically. AoC made my character feel like a badass for the first time in an MMO. Shadow of the Colossus made me sad to be winning for the first time ever in a game. And F.E.A.R. was the only time I've been frightened by a game. I haven't played any of them for a while though. Oh and one instance in a WoW trial that made me awed at the squandered possibility.
Last time I was in awe of a game was the World of Warcraft but also around that time my jaw dropped when I saw Doom 3 on my computer with my new 6800nu : )
Hate to say it but first time I entered Stormwind.
As a night elf, I have to say I was definitely awed the first time I entered Darnassus.
Stormwind has grown to become very impressive though following the addition of the harbor and the changes to Stormwind Keep that came with Cataclysm. I'll admit that SW awed me all over again when I reactivated for the begging of Cataclysm and got to view it from above on a flying mount. Being able to view the classic cities from a flying perspective was amazing. I spent several hours on both horde and alliance characters just flying around. Although I'm not playing anymore, I can definitely say that that novelty hasn't worn off yet.

It was as a nelf, because the journey took so long (by current standards) and so many crokolisk deaths. Genuinely was so good to arrive. Delete a few of those 'so's' - I sound like a twat.
Believe it or not, it happened in World of Warcraft, at least the last one did. I participate (off and on) in a guild of all dwarven hunters on Icecrown. We periodically take on raids that just flat out don't make sense. Which is perfect, because who would ever think that we would try some of the insane stuff we do?
Before Cataclysm was released, we ported over 300 dwarven hunters to Thunder Bluff and took on Cairne Bloodhoof. Total insanity. Lots of fun, even though we crashed the server accidentally. Here is one of the screens from the mad rush of all of us and our pets.

ya i was in a raid on cairne like that, at first glance i thought you had a screenie of that raid. it was hilarious fun. only something like that happening regularly, crazy, crazy stuff, could ever bring me back to that game though. just couldn't take it anymore.
but, that? that looks like fun.
i would like to add to my earlier awed moment by mentioning the pre to post searing GW. i hadn't really read anything on the game, i had some xtra cash and i bought it. i thought it would be like other mmo's a pretty starter area with some more intense devastated looking areas later. so i'm traipsing through all of the pre-searing content thinking, 'neat, i really like the vibe and the 'niceness' of this whole thing, i hope its like this all the way through.' then, one quest later and boom. it really came as a shock b/c as i said i hadn't read up on the game at all.
i s'pose its like xmas, if you know or dont know what you're getting, whether you wanted it or not, there's that moment when the wrapping comes off and you can never go back, except to open the next package.

Not too long ago actually, I know this is supposed to be more for non-MMO games, but Archeage, it's just drop dead gorgeous! I am generally not impressed by a game soley for graphics but wow! For single player game, definately Morrowind. Few game environments have captured me like that game did.
Last time a game awed me was by RIFT world, but the game play was recycled. Uncharted 2 the first game I beat on the PS3 and it had some real fun scenes in it. I am not one of those junkies that only play games with superb graphics. I believe I even was wowed by some moments in WoW and in Everquest when those games were new.
*****SPOILER****** (Uncharted 2)
Do not read below if you do not want to know about uncharted 2 example.
The part in Uncharted 2 where the building is crumbling down and you must get out alive, it was quite amazing.
The only time I can remember I was awed by a game was in April 2005 when I bought WoW cus a friend of mind had and thought it be fun for a few months - well I rolled a Night elf and from the fly through introduction to running around it just felt magical, the music, sound, atmospher all worked perfectly it was like I was 10 again. Walking out of the starter area and seeing the furblogs, following the roads only for it to start shaking then turning around and seeing a giant Tree stamp towards me. ahhhh good times.
Never had that in a MMO before (EQ,DAoC) or since, probably why I still play it.

Wow. I remember that same experience in the starter zone. I thought it was an earthquake or something and then turning around to see that huge tree.....I ran for my life. LOL It was a friendly tree, but I hadn't taken the time to LOOK. LOL Good memories. Thank you for reminding me.
It's been a very long time. Last time for me was seeing the first colossus off in the distance and running toward it to unknown peril in Shadow of the Colossus.
At the time so little of the game was known and the combat / mechanics worked so well while everyone was low level. Most fun I've had online gaming period is that stage of the game. When macros were not yet in affect and there was no OP character build. Everyone used what they wanted to and could be affective with it.
non-MMO: Witcher 2
Pushes my PC to the limit and had an amazing story.

Yeah I do remember those moments... the weakest starting area in WoW is likely the Humans... I do like WoW... but could never get hooked as so many have. Maybe SWTOR

Money is the root of all evil.
Games that awed me.
Dune 2
Starcontrol
X-Com
Tachyon the Fringe
Freelancer
Imperium Galactica 2
Independence war 1/2
Wing Commander 3
Starfleet command 1/2/OP
FFXI
FF7
Chrono Cross (PS)
Homeworld 1/2
The list is far too long, but I'd have to say the last game to truly wow me was Assassins Creed. It is simply amazing.
Its a game called Scarlet Legacy.
I came across the youtube page and saw their mount trailer. Some of the funniest **** around.
Pretty unique for an MMORPG.
I like the Burning Butt mount.
Oh yeah back to topic first game that I was in awe of was N64 Starfox and Mario. I was in middle school. -_-
Prolly cause that was the coolest thing at the time. So much for that.
Hate to say it but first time I entered Stormwind.

Ultima Online (during the first year) and the first Everquest (during the first couple years) and not since then.
Most recently, Darksiders and Red Dead Redemption.
Darksiders gameplay, strory, characters, and art style, all had their "awe" momments for me and couldn't put it down until I finished it.
RDR was mostly just the scenery, environment, and setting. Totally gorgeous game.

Parts of Vanguard did it for me.
Non-MMOs? Too many to count probably. Even in the crappiest of titles you can sometimes find a little shining mechanic that can surprise you.

The Witcher 2, i had played wither 1 and loved it, but what they did with the story in witcher 2, and a better combat system(far from perfect still).
The characters are just amazing, and choices you make ingame are better than anything else I played.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
As I was playing the single player, I knew we have entered a new era of gaming.
Cinematic Gameplay.

Just this past weekend while playing Vanguard for my first time. Absolutely brilliant.

Our Guardian guild raided Meridian and killed some of their leaders in Rift for a few world firsts. That was pretty amazing.

Oblivion (2006).
I heard a metallic sound, I looked down and saw an iron shield. I moved a bit, and the shield moved as well.
PHYSICS!
