Ahh.  I missed that somehow in all these comments.

Why care that others care about this? I have no problem if they switch focus, but they should do it completly and not just cover a part of those type of games. That will just be bad for the quality of the website and as a user you would not know the focus anymore.

I come here assuming that what I read is MMO related. I still see GW1 being MMO related. D3 is not MMO related one bit and neither are the DOTA type games. I do not care they do it, but in the end I might find a other website that is less all over the place to get my MMO information.

I find it annoying that it's now the job of the user to figure out if the upcomming game is a DOTA game, browser game, a RPG or actually an MMO. That to me is just silly. If they want to change focus and include all that then they really should change the layout and design of the website to make clear what the games falls under it could be as simple as giving a color to the rings around the logo's like the ones in the news section and to be released column. This would quickly show the users if they care for it or not.

So in short, I do not mind they include non-MMO games, but do believe they should make it more user friendly so it's clear what is a MMO, what is a browser game and when it's a RPG with multiplayer/co-op. Same in the game list and make it filerable on them as well.

The only thing it DOESN'T have are social gathering places (towns/cities), because it uses Battle.net to achieve this.
    It belongs here.

It isn't massive.  Hundreds of people cannot be on your monitor at the same time fighting or talking (unless it's in the lobby chat room....weaksauce).  It an action RPG that requires online play just like Diablo 2 Lord of Destruction online did.....and that's not included here EITHER.

It does not belong. But....who REALLY cares?  It's just a list of games.

If I have hundreds of people on my monitor in WoW, it's an indication that the server is going to crash in a few minutes. WoW is an MMORPG.

We used to have fights that big raiding Ironforge all the time and RARE was a server crash.  Not saying they never happened, but maybe TWICE?  That's massive.  Cut it down to 100 if you like, for the purpose of an example.  D3 has groups ....co op groups to play with.  I believe you can have either 16 or 32 (it's been ages since I played D2)....either way....
    16 is NOT massively multiplayer

They'll have 100,000+ messing about in the Auction House. You won't see their avatars, but that's just a difference in interfaces. They will be online, and they will be interacting.

    ** edit **
    @Aori - LoL! Keep hoping!

That's a lobby type interface.  By that reasoning GW1 should also be considered an MMO, but even it's developer does not calle it an MMO.  Yes, we have it on this site, because....like I've said 3 or more times now.....who cares?  It's a list of fucking games that MMO players might be interested in.  Does D3 belong.....technically NO.  But  does it fit with the stuff that's already listed in the games list.....YES.

Now I'm done arguing this stupid argument.  D3 is NOT an MMO....Blizzard won't even call it that.  However, I don't give a rat's patootey if it's listed in the games list.  Why care?????

The difference between GW1 & D3 in the lobby is that in GW1, all those people aren't really interacting while they're in the lobby. They aren't buying and selling items to and from each other. It's an extra level of interaction that goes a little beyond just finding a group for the next dungeon run.

I stated in another post that this is a very thin argument for the MMORPG classification. In my mind it's 'close enough'.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

So be it.  THAT would make a real difference.  I agree with you completely.

The reason I said "why care" is because ultimately I don't think we, the readers and the community of MMORPG.com, have anything to do with making the decisions.  Many of these games PAY to advertise on this site and I just don't see those games being turned down from being listed, if you know what I mean.  I don't really think that our little "opinions" have anything to do with anything.  But we're still all bold enough to give them.  Props to the community for at least sharing their minds.

Requires a constant online connection. You might as well.  But it should be heavely focused on the AH aspects of the game.

4 player lobby game does not = MMORPG.

No.  It's not an MMORPG according to its developers so it doesn't belong here.  Same with GW and a number of other games.

Add! I love the community here and have been watching over this game like a hawk. Would be nice to talk about this game in a familar community. I don't see why you shouldn't add this game. There has been so many other games that have been questionable, so why even waste time thinking about it. It'll bring in a nice community and give us a chance to gather our thoughts about the long awaited triquel. Lastly, as far as im concerned this is an mmorpg, why read into the details?

  • Kaynos1972Kaynos1972 Member Posts: 2,316

I come here to read about MMO's there is already too many games that are border line MMO's.  Diablo is not an MMO, no dont add it.

  • ShadowdawnzShadowdawnz Member UncommonPosts: 201

Massive = Large quantity of players will be on several servers. I think the server part is what gives the word "Massive" a meaning. Otherwise, without servers, it would be a single player game.

    Multiplayer =  Supports 4 players.

Online =  Falls back on there being servers and multiplayer capability.

Role Playing = This term is debatable.. it could mean simply playing the character (look at other game titles which are said to be RPGs example Elder Scrolls) or the player actually giving personality to the character which they inact in game with other players.. In any case.. you play the character in the end and fullfill whatever requierements are needed to progress.. As well, the fact the characters are able to improve themselves, might add to the role playing element. Just like the pen and paper days.

So.. um.. sorry guys. I should have said yes. I didn't think this through before hitting the "NO!" button.

    My 2 cents...

I think I got pissed off BEFORE that part of the OP.  It's been a bad day.  Cut me some slack.  I'm usually fairly well behaved.  Woof woof.  (See...I told you I was having a bad day.)  Thanks for updating me on the stuff I so stupidly missed.  And, by the way....I do know how to read and DO read.  I usually read the entire OP.  This time, like I said....I got pissed off early on.  Can you find it in your wittle bitty heart to forgive me?  lol

I voted NO and if I had the chance to I would have also voted NO for LoL. If you keep just adding Multiplayer Online Games that either don't have the MASSIVE or the ROLE PLAYING part then sorry it's not an MMORPG.

I know people probably disagree with me but this is my opinion on the matter.

    This.

It seems people only read the topic and then ignore the actual column.
Of course D3 isn´t an MMO, lol. But sections for let´s say Action-RPG and this and that sound interesting. So we would get a broader spectrum of online games... without calling them MMOs. ;)

I was going to vote yes but the no arguments convinced me.

  • AllhallowsAllhallows Member Posts: 43

    I vote Yes.

While Diablo 3 might not be a "true" MMO, the genres are near identical.  Also, Diablo 3 is the "exception" in this case (when compared to Torchlight and Titan Quest) because of Blizzards WOW being the most successful MMORPG ever made, the fact that Diablo was responsible for a lot of players being turned onto the MMORPG genre, and the fact that the RMAH is going to be the test for "every" other MMO game in our near future.

Diablo has earned its place on this site.  Everyone here will be playing it anyways.  It's time to evolve with the genre.

  • pierthpierth Member UncommonPosts: 1,494

Haven't read through the entire thread, but how would having D3 on the site be any different from having forums for GW1?

  • quentin405quentin405 Member Posts: 468

What? Sorry i was being too sarcastic I guess.  I was saying this "article" is more low quality content from this site..  I say that because if you look at the other games Mmorpg.com adds to its game list and sometimes reviews, it shouldnt be under discussion to add D3 or not.  I dont want to name games because Im not trolling, but I mean there are hub based games, completely instanced games, BROWSER games, and yet they seem at a loss/need votes for  the decision of adding D3 to the list.  All I see is an article thats here for a lack of actual content is all..

If that still doesnt make sense, just nevermind, appearently this column was written for you :P

In terms of what's already available here, sure.

However, I always thought of MMOs as having cohesive, persistent, online game worlds.  Anything using a hub and spoke/instance system doesn't qualify.  For example, WoW or Rift where you can walk from one zone to another without a loading screen qualify as MMO.  CoH and AoC are bordering on questionable becuase of the lading screens and how their zones are sometimes instanced.  Diablo would definitely not be considered an MMO.

On a side note, many other genres that have adopted MMO such as MMORTS have basically bastardized the term MMO in much the same way that T-Mobile and AT&T bastardized the term 4G, which basically has no meaning now.

If you don't worry about it, it's not a problem.

  • LawlmonsterLawlmonster Member UncommonPosts: 1,085

I don't think it would hurt anything to add it to the site's list of games, but maybe there needs to be some form of sub-category for games like it? Personally, I don't think the game justifies being called an MMO, because you're not playing in a world that is capable of sustaining thousands of players at a time. Perhaps there should just be a "Multiplayer RPG" section? Something not directly related to being massive?

I do not think it should be added, even if it is creating a buzz that some people running this site feel like they may miss and that they may not benefit from the ratings that this buzz may generate.

Diablo 3, is a solo game with multiplayer capability, it is not an MMORPG.

It does not have a Persistent world and it is not Massivelly played in the sense that its world is not shared by thousands of people.

It has an Auction House..so what? Big fraking deal. Just because Blizzard thought to capitalise on an activity that has been there in an unnofocial way since more than 10 years now, that does not make it an MMORPG.

One has to be connected Online to play it..so what? This is just a security measure, companies have managed to impose on us players, in order to raise profits and to reduce as much as possible piracy, that does not make it an MMORPG.

If Diablo 3 is added, then many other Solo games should be added too and if that happens then this place changes to a generic Gaming Site that has no particular specialty as it does now, so while it may benefit from a brief Hype of Diablo 3, it may also lose in the long run.

But this is how things go usually in life, someone becomes too greedy and ends up losing their business in the process, and someone else replaces them.

    The choice is really yours.
