ArenaNet's Jon Peters has just posted a developer blog over at Guild Wars 2's official site detailing some of the many ways in which their game will be continuing the tradition of competitive gameplay that Guild Wars made so popular.
For Guild Wars 2, we wanted to organize the PvP formats more clearly and simply. For pickup play, we've created a single place where all pickup players can play. It's a server browser where "hot join" games are constantly running. We've also created a single, central place for competitive play in the form of automatic tournaments. These two play styles—pickup and competitive—share a lot of gameplay similarities, which allows players to easily transition from casual to more organized play. This is important, because both pickup and tournament play are independent of "world" choice. In other words, all Guild Wars 2 PvP players are in the same PvP games and are not segregated.

So, no world PvP?
That is disappointing.
Not yet. That is.

Power to the Sheeple
they unveiled only a portion of the pvp with the hot join and tournament play. i assume there giving people a feel for pvp without throwing them into ( i think) a more complicated form of pvp. Just my thoughts.
I like how in the animation you can see five fingers allowing you to see magical gestures.
ArenaNet CLEARLY STATED they won't reveal WvWvW-PvP at GamesCom or PAX.
Some additional info:
At the end of the demo tour we were shown a bit of what PvP would be like, but due to us only having access to 7 PCs we couldn’t try it out for ourselves. In this short introduction we were shown the hot-joinable selection screen which is just a pop-up screen like your inventory, hero menu and other screens. Here you can choose for yourself what server you’d like to join. The game then creates a player pool, which gets rotated after every battle to keep it fair for both sides. If you don’t like a certain server, you can just return to the PvP screen and choose a different server, just like in your average FPS. Speaking of FPSs, you can clearly see the influence of this game-category throughout the rest of the PvP areas as well. To create a new path or create cover, you can make use of the destructible environment to easily create a new setting from a destroyed building. Like with dynamic events, siege weapons in PvP will grant you new skills and access to the rotation mechanics of your siege weapon as well. Want to try and take out an enemy nearby silently? You can even break the glass to create a new entrance into a building to ambush people who are inside. All in all, movability is the key to PvP in Guild Wars 2.

Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.
This is not a game.
"EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY"
Lol, Dwight K. Schrute impersonator?
Sorry let me rephrase that for all you people who only understand GW2 terminology.
NO OPEN WORLD PVP.
Who cares about W v W v W, it's still just instanced PvP. I want it in the open game world, where, you know... things can affect the world.
There is no open world PvP, that's true however WvWvW is persistent although it takes place in a seperate area.
How dare you address ignorance with logic. We dun' need yer kind 'round here.
Actually, that doesn't address it, open world PvP is different to WvWvW.
Not sure why people are trying to convince me otherwise, it's perfectly clear what they've said.
Yep and by that logic DAOC did not have world PVP either, good to know!
Not going to happen.
My theme song.
Wait.. why there are 3 articles about the same thing? There is a new trailer which deserved to have a seperate article but now it seems like mmorpg.com posts everything they can find related to GW2. A little dumb if you ask me.
So why would this be important? You don't have player owned towns or keeps, so the open world PvP would just be the typical 4v1 gank fest it turns into in every other game with world PvP objectives. Probably in most games with world PvP objectives.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
It is important, because ArenaNet are one of the few companies out there that I truely believe could make open world PvP work.
They are a really talented and forward thinking group of people, so for them to not even try, is a shame.

Are there even factions in GW2? Everyone lives in the same city together. Guild Wars is not a FFA Open World PvP game. Nothing in the manifestos would lead anyone to think that. Nothing is any of the lore either (though I haven't read all of it).
There's nothing here or anywhere else that would lead anyone to believe that ArenaNet would put it in GW2. It just doesn't fit in the design of the game.
The WvWvW sounds really cool, if it actually gets in there.

The reason why they stuck WvWvW off in another part of the world (Though a pretty remarkably big one) is for obvious reasons.
How can you have open world PvP and still follow their stated design philosophy of you always being glad (Or at worst neutral) to see another player in the world?
How could you get it to work with their stated anti-griefing policy and dynamic events?
How could you make it work with their theme of cooperation amongst all races to defeat a greater threat? :<
Open world main world PvP can be fun, but only if the game type and design philosophy fits it.
And that's the root of the issue here. GW has always been focused heavily on Storyline, and PvP has always been off by itself, segregated from the PvE gameworld. You will never see Open World PvP in Guild Wars for that primary reason. Heavily involved Storyline content and Open World PvP do not mix. You're just not going to be able to focus on the storyline when you have gank fests happening in the world, the focus shifts from experiencing the storyline and your place in it to survival, while trying to get tasks done to progress whatever story there might be. Having any time any where pvp pulls you out of the narrative of the story, and breaks immersion.
With that said...it might be possible for them to create Open World PvP, but it would have to be in terms of a separate server, and not one single persistent world. Though, that might change the way they approach their focus on storyline....which I'm not in favor of. I think I like it separate like it is now....when they focus on PvE then that's all they have to focus on...they don't have to worry about how changes will impact PvP gameplay and vice versa.
