The Secret War requests FULL access to your Facebook information!

taus01taus01 Member Posts: 1,352

I advice everyone not to join this secret war on your privacy.

Funcom requests full Profile information, anything others share with you and can post anything it want's on your wall. This means EVERYTHING is shared and available to Funcom.

Using a Beta to get full personal information from possibly tens to hundreds of thousand people is more than shady. Information like that is worth a lot since this is a target audience of gamers/online gamers. On the advertising Market information like that sells for a few hundred thousand dollars if not more.

Nice try Failcom!

I've never been a proponent of allowing wide open access to FB info, and have elected to not participate in the secret war facebook activities as a result.

That being said, the OP needs clarification - the secret war is NOT required to participate in the beta of the Secret World.  Funcom clearly states this.  I have signed up for the beta, but will not sign up for the Secret War.

    FYI.

That is correct. You don't need to participate to sign up for beta. But they dangle the GUARANTEED ACCESS carrot if you do.

I have not seen ANY OTHER APPLICATION requesting this kind of acces to my Facebook information.

I created a dummy FB account for the Secret War stuff, seemed good enough to me.

Using a dummy email and FB account for stuff is good and people should do this to avoid identity theft, account theft and spam.

I don't accept of sharing my personal information and information of my friends and colleagues.

So no thanks no. Not registering.

I felt like that if I used by actual Facebook account, the Secret World would be spamming my friends with information, polls, links, and all those other annoying game-related invites I get from my friends who play so many facebook games. I don't wish this crap upon any of them, even the ones who repeatedly send me game invites.

  • VhalnVhaln Member Posts: 3,159

Guess I must be wierd in that I don't give Facebook any info I'd want private.

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

I honestly don't think it's that serious. I used my personal FB account because I'm pretty sure Funcom's not going to stalk, rape, and/or kill me. I mean, do you guys seriously think that there's some huge conspiracy behind them requesting facebook information. It's not like that's rea-...

FB isnt about aps and games for me, its about friends, so nope FC wont be getting my FB details along with anyone else. I sincerely hope this doesn't set a precedent so that content in TSW won't be available if you don't give them access to FB, that would be shooting themselves in the foot.

I don't get it. Why does Funcom for example need to know what my interests are? That's just plain weird.

    O_O...

missed all the tinfoil hats people in this thread are wearing, eh?

Funcom is obviously going to sell all personal info on facebook to pink alien rhinos who will then use that data to make cake recipes to sell to muppet population of their home planet. :P

Facebook paranoia is high right now. People seem to have some stupid belief that government or those interested in them STILL DO NOT KNOW everything about them and need a social media site to know :D

AS for those with fake FB accounts - well, sucks to be you if you happen to win a 100% beta slot or free trip to montreal and it gets revoked because of faux information on your fb account :)

Funcom, look at my money: isn't for you!

Yes why not? what people have to lose by making dummy accounts if they get in TSW beta? also FB account is for participating in secret wars not for playing actual game.

I'm no fan of FC, but seriously... get over it.

FB gives them nothing I wouldnt tell them happily as part of a standard registration.

What actually is it that you think you are telling them that endangers you so much?

    so what?

now they know my name is shane and i live in southampton england, they have my email (every mmo does) and i have 70 friends on my face book.

I'm an old guy.  I use Facebook to keep in touch with family members in other states and friends I made in the military.  I don't store my social security number or DNA on Facebook, I put pictures of my me and my daughter there so my family can post important things like "ohhh...so cuuuuttteee!!!".  It's not a big deal.

Buying a game - ANY game - with a debit or credit card gives more personal compromisable information than a little Facebook account will.  People just hate Facebook (or pretend to) because it's mainstream, and they're too cool for mainstream.

The only thing they can store as part of your standard registration is your Credit Card number and full name.

This "sign up" gives them access to all the information you and your friends share on facebook. That is quite a difference and can easily be used to extract quite interesting information about you, your family, purchasing behaviour, social status, career, sex life etc.

Why do you need facebook to participate in the first place?

Why do they need FULL access instead of, LIKE MOST FB APPS DO, just access to post on your wall?

Why baiting with guaranteed beta access if you share your info?

Answer me this one Question: WHY DO THEY NEED IT AT ALL?

The other questions is kind of subjective and subject to interpretation, but this one is pretty clear: TSW uses metagame stories, mysteries and puzzles (eg ARG's). Just like google and mail, Facebook will facilitate it.

I can even imagine, that people from the same faction will link into the same official group, just like they'll get their own separate forumsection and newsletters.

To do that they don't need FULL access to your FB information. You are not getting it or you are just plain ignoring the fact that NO SOCIAL GAME requests this kind of access, not one!

Again, why do they need full access to your information and that of your friends!

A fake account won't help you either, since should you win you will be disqualified because your information is faux. Can't send the price to "John Doe" now can they?

    That's very true.

If you want to keep it private then Facebook is not the best tool out there to help you do that.

I think it's a generational thing. There seem to be many younger people who love a more open "this is me in my entiretly" type attitutude.

The internet, I suppose, is very freeing in that regard. Especially with things like bloggin, "forums" and for games vent or TS where anyone can have access to what you are thinking.

In my generation we had UHF channels which we spent countless hours trying to tune in and we LIKED it! image
