I hate underwater questing / mob killing / whatever you want to call it... In my mind as well having been under water, there is not much movement, so combat would be sort of phoney. I kinda laughed always watching mage fireballs and stuff under water.. There's a million reasons why I hate it, I cant think of any why I would enjoy it
Mostly the reason though is because its annoying, breathing, unclear distortion, slow moving.... etc
I simply think its a waste of time, although water and travel in it is welcome.
What I would think is cool is having boats and stuff, something I dont think many have done.. A player or party can go on a boat,
and as they go across the water, they can fight things they see that are shallow and get loot, then bigger monsters might come try to eat the boat, so the pilot has to be careful, then maybe a big monster comes out and you have to cast and use ranged on it.. or be right next to it and fight it... that would be cool
A few things:
1) Weapons and skills change to be underwater appropriate in GW2. You don't cast fireballs and such while underwater; you equip harpoons and the like and use related skills.
2) Breathing isn't an issue. You get a water-breathing apperatus that negates the need to surface for air.
3) From the videos, it looks as if the speed is actually decently fast, and it looks like they've done a good job of greatly reducing the disorientation and general control problems that plague a lot of underwater fights and navigation in MMO's.
If you want realism, go play outside. This is a damn mmo, not a flight simulator. Seriously... bunch of kid. "They move too fast, it Break my immersion" hahahaha.
Way to prove my point, I almost died laughing when i read your post. see earlier post and youll get it
You dont even post your opinion on the underwater combat you just see somone dislike somthing about your precious game and immediately attack with childish insults. Just because somone has a different opinion on somthing doesnt make them wrong, but youll learn that as you grow.
Back to the topic at hand, I think having a lake in the middle of the WvWvW would work well that way you could chose to participate or not
Ìt's because i really don't understand why some people are always complaining about their "my so important immersion" because of tiny thing like movement speed underwater...
As Fiontar said in earlier post "Arena Net has really worked hard to make underwater combat and exploration fun." They made the underwater content Fun.
Some are complaining it break their immersion because there is no breath meter and slow movement speed underwater...
Hey wake up! Breath meter and slow movement underwater isn't fun. And nobody find it fun unless they want to play an underwater diving simulation.
It is just idiot to complain about things that are there to make it funnier. Don't tell me that underwater content would be much more fun with slow movement... was the underwater content fun in wow? no
edit: but at least if you really don't like underwater content because it break your immersion, there is plenty of "on land" content.
Originally posted by TGSOL IRL you can't run non-stop (or at all, depending on how bulky the armor is), or jump higher than about an inch, or do fancy dodge rolls, or a host of other things that not only GW2 but countless other fantasy games allow you to do with with heavy armor and multiple heavy steel weapons equipped. I don't see how underwater combat is unique in this regard.
I really don't have any intrest in PvP either way, but it's something I can definitely see them doing, and given how hard they've worked on underwater stuff I'd almost say the game NEEDS it at some point to be complete. I think an area that involves both underwater and land based PvP could be really interesting.

People are just mixing up jousting cavalry plate armor with usual plate armor that was light and could be used on foot fight without much of a hindrance (there is a debate if you could even swim in them), which was not the case of some heavy cavalry armor that was meant to be worn on horse mainly.
In general I'm not a fan of underwater anything in an MMORPG (or any other 3D asdw game). I don't feel it translates well to keyboard control. To me, the control issue is just too awkward and detracts from gameplay.
Maybe immersion is covered in your eyes but not mine. Fast paced underwater combat? Immersion breaker right there, unless your character is going to turn into a mermaid. Nothing with 2 legs can move well under water even if naked let alone with a suit of armor and weapon. I know it's a fantasy game but there are jus some properties in RL that have to stay consistant to make the game believable IMO.
Also this is my first post actually bashing the game. All my others have been directed towards the fan base and their ridiculous attacks on anyone who tries to point out flaws in their precious love child.
Ps if a mod could remove naqaj's post I'd appreciate it considering I didn't post what he quoted me as saying.
Er....
So you don't want underwater combat because you say at first it would be too slow, then when someone proves to you that it isn't slow you complain that it's too fast and breaks immersion...

I don't see someone literally running forever without the need to take any kind of break ala MMO's such as GW2, I don't see people diving around left and right with the sort of force, distance and gracefullness of a GW2 dodge roll, or people jumping 4-5 feet (or higher if it's a special skill) in the air over and over and over without tiring as is completely possible in MMO's, GW2 included now that you can jump. Etc, etc.

I don't see people doing any of that without armor on, either. There are games out there that require you to eat, sleep, crap, and do countless other mundane tasks. None of it translates well into a fantasy action MMORPG.

I think the problem with underwater combat in most MMO's is the limited range of the camera. You can only look straight up from your feet and straight down from your head, but you cant go past that. This gives the illusion of full camera range, but it's just an awful illusion.
i have always HATED fighting underwater, the only time it was ok was in the one WoW area in cata but it didn't even feel like it was under water so was basicly pointless.
Why would anyone want to pvp under water? what a terrible idea, you would have to make everything so slow that it would be no fun. Imagine if you had people swinging swords at full speed and shooting fireballs / arrows in the water, well good bye immersion.
I'll bite,
While I am agaisn't underwater combat you comment just makes you look like a troll, if you knew anything about GW2 before bashing it like you go to the trouble of doing in multiple threads you would know that underwater combat atm in GW2 is fast, the weapons change from Swords and Axes to water weapons, like tridents, and guns change to arpoons, "fireballs" change to boiling water and so on. So immersion is pretty much covered here, as we will already have underwater maps with PvE content.
edit: just saw TGSOL's post and at least that makes more sense if that is true.
edit 2: well after finishign the video it seems good enough but it still looks gimmicky. Well done but still a gimick. Apparently our character doesn't ahve to worry about losing breath while exderting himself/herself.
Other than being different I just don't see the point.
Edit 3: I'm now almost through the video and it has essentially answered a good many of my concerns so I must remove this part. However, I still think it's gimicky.
I'd rather them just make people fly with magic.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."

Except that it's still ridiculous. Short of using stabbing weapon there shouldnt' be swinging swords and especially not fireballs under water. You might as well just call it a gimmick.
Because that is what it comes off as to me. We aren't aquatic beings, even if one wants to pull the "it's a game, it's fantasy" card the premise of putting people under water to fight just doesn't ring true.
Essentially they want to give players an extra access to fight in. Ok great, but that negates the idea of water being an alien enviorment for non-aquatic beings, a place where one is more vulnerable. It negates what water is about.
I'd rather them just make people fly with magic.

"If you want to go full-on underwater, just tilt your camera down and keep moving forward—you will dive below the waves. When this happens, you will automagically switch to your underwater weapon set, your underwater skill setup, and your breathing device."
Let’s take a look at the pointy underwater weapons:
Spear: Close-quarters melee weapon
Used by:
Warrior
Necro
Ranger
Thief
Guardian
Trident: Long-range magical weapon
Used by:
Necro
Guardian
Elementalist
Harpoon gun: Long-range mechanical weapon
Used by:
Engineer
Warrior
Ranger
Thief
"Of course, there is more to your skill bar in Guild Wars 2 than just your weapon skills. That’s why, we whenever you dive beneath the surface, the skills in slots 6 through 10 automatically change to underwater skills. As you might imagine, not all your land-based utility, heal, and elite skills work underwater, so we’ve come up with some really cool underwater equivalents of these skills."
Do you some research before you go talking about something you have no info on.
