I think Roma Victor will have many of the hardcore pvp fans and crafting fans. From reading their faq the combat and crafting sound like the best I have ever seen. I played UO since Nov 3, 1997 until AOS. I agree that I have never played a MMO as good as UO but, I think RV will be better. It doesn't seem rushed to me since they have been making it for almost 5 years now. BTW don't count on DnL to be good.

RV has been in development for nearly 5 years now. Its devs have been in contact with an ever-growing community for that time. Yet you call it rushed...
Originally posted by nephillim i played UO for 4 years, and totally agree that not a single MMO since has been as good, but to me, Roma Victor looks pants. very poor, lazy and rushed. same as Irth Online. neither of these game have grabbed my attention. I can see where you may come to that conclusion by looking at screenshots. However, 5+ years of coding, development, and actual real world historical research has been moulded into the gameplay of Roma Victor. It's obviously not something you can see from the screenshots or the short movies on the site. However, after the NDA is lifted you will be able to talk to current testers and see just what is in the game.
On the subject of graphics, the in depth gameplay came first in this game, and RedBedlam is in no way skiping out on the graphics. With a small team working for little more than student pay at times (and the directors working for no pay, including myself) RB obviously doesnt have the man power that the big name main developers have out there. Rest assured, graphics will be delt with when the hard part of development is done, gameplay. Eye candy is about eleventy billion times easier to make than a good badging/reputation/combat/well, gameplay in general, system. The graphics have improved since day one, and after the ground effects are actually turned on, you'll see quite a difference. On top of that, many MMOGs continue to improve their look long after release (WWIIO for one), so thats also another option.
I'm not trying to make excuses, I'm just restating what has been beaten to death on our boards by our community.
But these days people only look at gfxs , but I for one don't , i need the game play , if the game play sucks i don't play , for sure roma victory looks 1 great game withawsome gameplay if you see the feature list ... can't wait till it is released for sure ...
WOOT! I just thought of something else great with the game.
Being that theres going to be a high death penalty, and people will avoid dying, I bet there will be no problems with CAMPING AND SPAWNING! WOOT!
In WWIIONLINE and PLANETSIDE all tactics devolved into 1 thing, camp the spawnpoint. Even in EVE ONLINE battles devolve into 1 thing, camp the jumpgate. CAMP THE SPAWN POINT! haha, a game without camping *cries* Its all coming true.
I bet I'd only die once a week, or once a month. I want to be a crafter, maybe ill get jumped by PLAYER pirates once in a great while, or maybe have my barbarian village razed by Romans once in a while.
Instead of uber-skillz, and uber-equipment, the size of my NPC army and amount of precious metals or trading commodities will be determine my true power. AND ANYONE CAN STEAL FROM ME! WOOT! And if they steal from me, I can burn their house down! WOOT! Or stab them in their sleep. WOOT! im rambling again.
It has the ideas and gameplay to be the biggest but, it doesn't have a big name behind it so that people will buy it(seems to be the trend of late, people buying games that have big names regardless of how good they are what am I talking about, it has always been that way).
On the gfx thing, games move in trends. Right now it's all about the look with MMOs, cos Sony, Blizzard, whoever the hell made Guild Wars, all tell us it looks awesome, so it rocks. But in essence, their modern 'all about looks' games are bland as... soggy wheat. They had the money to invest in an amazing graphics engine, so they did.
But to be honest, I would reeeeally love to know the % of WoW and Guild Wars (and EQ2 to an extent) players who have never played an MMO before. They keep logging in and saying how awesumr0xxorz the game is, because they don't know any better, and cos it looks pretty. But all in all, you grind to top level and then PvP... or reroll and do it again.
Probably 95% of my friends who moved to WoW and/or Guild Wars have quit, or log in once a fortnight, some even after less than a month of playing. I'm the same. And in time, first/second timer MMO'ers will do the same.
Because games like RV are not all about beating the Big Guys. They aren't out to outdo the mammoth visual feast that is EQ2. They're here to say to those over-rich companies that this is how gameplay can and should be. This is what's possible in an MMO, and there is no reason ANY huge company cannot do it. Cos RedBedlam are doing it with a small, self funded group of dedicated gamer/coders, as far as I can tell.
It's about keeping the rich bastards honest. And RedBed are doing it in spades. I mean look at the current scenario... I play EQ2, for now. It's a what, $40, $100, $150mil production? More, less, I dunno, but loads.
And what does that tremendous outlay of money provide to us, the games? Endless running in circles gathering. Endlessly killing the same mobs, that statically stand in the same place, respawning at the same level. Killing them over and over until 'ding', you have a new skill. Same goes with crafting. Do the same thing over and over until 'ding'...
The point being, there is so much more that SoE, Blizzard, those Guild Wars people etc COULD have given us, and should have really, but they bluffed and fooled us with eyecandy.
And it'll only be a matter of time until word of mouth gets in motion, and people will hear from their friends and wander over to RV, Darkfall (if we ever see it), hopefully Hero's Journey etc. The games that are promising to be more freeform, 'realistic' and IN DEPTH. Offering variation, consequence both positive and negative. No complete and utter focus on the next 'ding' like it's some heroin fix. Etc, etc... etc..
So my point being.. erm... I think I made one.. *scratches head* To people who write this project off (which is 95% of the time purely from looking at a screenshot or two), I personally believe RV and games like it will be cause for a momentous shift in future, probably so far unannounced games. And the sad thing is, it's pretty much just returning to the original focus, the UO focus...
And just to clarify AGAIN for the graphics whiners. The screenshots have no 'fluff' features turned on in them. They are indications of the game the testers are playing at THIS time. They are not dolled up (insert big name MMO here) images etc. But you knew that though, cos you wouldn't make statements about the screenshots as though you know what's up, without researching it on the forums.
Well that's my semi rant, semi political statement, semi fanboi focussed (cos I am really looking forward to seeing what can be done) diatribe.
Done.
"(The) Iraqi people owe the American people a huge debt of gratitude." - George W Bush. Oh. My. God.
To the people complaining RV will be gankers heaven: Why are people so unimaginative? If there is (almost) no limit to ganking , then the opposite is true as well . Instead of whining about it for endless hours , why dont you use your brains and think about a strategy to prevent it? Why do you see so many people dreaming about the old uo times? Because the game was about freedom and choice , just like RV will be. If you put just a little brainpower into your actions , then you will find a way just around everything.
Will you be able to be prepared for just everything? Guess not , but one can only learn from mistakes . Else, where d the thrill be? Think about it, do you really want the game to do the thinking for you by limiting your gameplay or would you rather use your brain and come up with something imaginative.
ROMAN! Most definately Roman! The idea of being in a Roman Legion and fighting in huge battles just gives me goosebumps. Hell even being a Gladiator in slavery would work for me, it's all about the roleplay you see fit. Actually I wonder if you can apply to be a Praetorian of the Senate and the People of Rome (SPQR). Praetorians are just awesome. I'm so jealous of you guys that got into the beta. I can't wait till I get a chance.
