What is the opposite of trolling?

TalonsinTalonsin Member EpicPosts: 3,619

Is there a category for when a fanbois posts misleadingly positive information about an inferior product?  Why is it when you post specific examples of why you dont like a game you are trolling and the fanbois can report your post but it is ok for them to post misleading stuff in order to trick people into paying for a game that is terrible?

Trolling is trying to elicit a response so I guess the opposite of trolling is not posting.

    Hehehe.

Trolling is when you post something to elicit responses or upset people for the "fun" of it and no other reason.

I suppose the opposite of trolling would be if you posted something and tried as hard as you could to make sure no one would respond to it lol :).

Sometimes you get the best responses when you lightly poke someone with a hot iron though.

Go scan the Warhammer Online forums over the past two years for a more accurate description of your question.

The Rift ones are starting to turn this way as well unfortunately. Accentuating only the positive, exaggerating it wildly, or blindly ignoring blatant lies and misrepresentations by the fan's company is the opposite of trolling.

Also, attacking people PERSONALLY and as an individual when they say something negative about a fan's game is the quickest way to identify a 'reverse troll'.

There should never be any reason if someone says "This game bites donkey nuts" for the reply to be "I feel sorry for you, you deluded idiot" or something likewise.

That's the favorite tactic of the 'reverse troll'. Attack the individual who they feel is attacking 'their' game, even though they didn't make it.

As previously mentioned, trolling generally is posting something in order to elicit a heated and emotional response.

Both postive and negative posts can be considered trolling if they are basically lying in order to accomplish their purpose.

The trick is, much of what we discuss is based on opinions, which largely cannot be really right or wrong, so if someone posts I dislike game A and here's why, even if its the same thing you've seen a dozen times before, they are free to post and on this site at least, it's not considered trolling.

I know people say they get moderated frequently for posting negative opinions, but more often than not if they really took a good look at what they wrote, and how they wrote it they would agree they probably could have phrased their thoughts in a different, less challenging manner that would have avoided the warning/moderation.

I never heard this word, but it's pretty accurate lol. I like the term better than 'smurfing'.. wonder who made it up.

I'd also consider the opposite of trolling "doublerainbowing".

Every game has its positives and negatives and not every game is going to be liked by everyone, I get that.  I dont understand why there are not rules to warn/ban obvious misleading posts when they are positive.  An example is when someone on the offical fourm posts that an event sucks but then comes to MMORPG and posts to make it look like it was awesome in an attempt to get people to pay for the game.  That person then reports everyone who posts a negative comment in the thread.

I agree trolling should be a punishable offense but so should "smurfing" (loved that answer).

I'd say it's still trolling. You can troll by being both over the top positive or negative, you could easily bait some people by making ludicrously positive statements about a game.

The opposite of trolling is fly fishing or dynamite fishing. The term trolling comes from fishing, meaning to throw out bait on lines, usually from a moving boat. (not to be confused with trawling, which is the same with nets). Obviously, the term is appropriate metaphorically in forums, you are baiting en masse.

I think fly fishing or fishing wwith dynamite are the most different types of getting fish.

They are both trolling, its just that some troll by ignorance, and some troll on purpose. The ignorant Troll are the most common anyway. I only know one or 2 guys since i post in mmo forum that are real Trolls, they are the gems of internet and should be respected.

Somehow over the years, trolling came to also mean lurking, but in the context of this thread and the rules of most chat channels on the web, trolling is an attempt to provoke others or ellicit a negative response from others.

"In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory,[2] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response[3] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.[4] The noun troll may refer to the provocative message itself, as in: "That was an excellent troll you posted". While the wordtroll and its associated verb trolling are associated with Internet discourse, media attention in recent years has made such labels subjective, with trolling describing intentionally provocative actions outside of an online context. For example, mass media uses troll to describe "a person who defaces Internet tribute sites with the aim of causing grief to families."[5][6]"

There is a difference between posting negative comments about a game and posting negative comments in order to get a rise out of people.

    For example:

I find that the art design for the avatars and gear in LOTRO are not very inspired. I have no problem with a more realistic appoach and prefer it with this IP, however, the design of these items could have been done better and they don't seamlessly fit in with the beautiful world that Turbine created. Additionally I don't feel an overwhelming sense of "lord of the rings" or "middle earth" and sometimes the game just feels like a bland version of "x fantasy game". On top of that the f2p model is a bit too much in one's face and at time it feels like I'm always being sold to.

    or

LOTRO sucks, the avatars look like a kindergartner made them and what a** came up withthe brilliant idea to make all the weapons glow with radiation. Only a moron would play a game that had such sucky stuff. Turbine clearly wasted the IP and are only kept in business because idiots flock to the game like sheep because if their new "pay to win" loser model. They make me sick.

    Exactly.

The word trolling was mistakenly attributed to mean the "troll" that lives under a bridge in the children's story, but that troll doesn't do anything other than charge people a fee to cross.

The real "trolling" comes from the actual word of fishing, in which someone puts out a "line" and hopes to get a "bite". Then there is "trawling" which boats do by casting wide nets while moving slowly, capturing any wayward fish too stupid to get out of the way ensnared.
