Players need to divorce themselves of the idea that just because one game, a new game comes out, that everything else will take a hit. Some games my temporarily take a hit if they share the same type demographic of players but we need to look at the larger picture.

The people who are playing Vanguard are playing vanguard because it's "Vangaurd".

this doesn't mitigate the idea that they might play other games but vanguard is what it is and offers something different than all the new games coming out.

Secondly, this game is not being kept alive to compete wiht other games per se. It's being kept alive to enrich the offerings of Sony's station pass.

It's part of a larger whole. Once Sony has no more use for it or wants to discontinue any support then they will cancel it.

regardless of what games are on the horizon.

There is nothing releasing anytime soon that would give a VG player an experience similar to VG so I think you are safe. Once the VG players try TOR and see how similar it is to WoW or the other games trying to copy it's success, they will most likely head right back to playing VG.

VG has also been on autopilot for over a year now so it's not like they are having to spend any money on maintaining status quo. Even if they lose a few subs for the first month or two of the big releases, they should be ok.

    Agreed for the exact reason.

The fallout regarding SWTOR will be fun to watch- those that want to play it as a third installment of KoTOR are going to be really pissed off when they have to group with other people to push the story; those that want to play it as a modern hack & slash MMO will be irritated by all of the story elements that interrupt their hacking & slashing; and of course PvPers will be all kinds of pissed off about MMO combat, gear discrpancies, OP classes and all of the other bits that come along with PvPing in a MMORPG.

My GF's son is selling Trail's End popcorn for scouts atm and you know I'll be getting some ready when all the SWTOR hate threads start really popping (pre-release hate threads are tame in comparison).

I say again, vg will be fine. I swear some of the doomsayers around here aren't even playing the game. People may check out the next thing, but maintaining accounts.

It's only my guess, as the same with everyone has one

SWTOR - Will end up as an in detail single player game.  Sorry too many cut scenes, too much story lines.  If your a Star Wars fan you will love it, but it will end up NOT being a fun mmorpg.

GW2- Again just a guess. The original release will be disappointingly short, and the next expansion will be released within weeks waiting for you to pay top dollar.

Than as always, everyone will be scrambling for an mmo to play all over again.

    I highly doubt it.

It might survive, but frankly it would just be prolonging the inevitable. The game has 500 players at most, it has been on it's last legs for quite some time (imho).

  • AdamantineAdamantine Member RarePosts: 5,094

Well, I am definitely going to play SW:TOR.

If for nothing else, simply to see the possibly last true Bioware game ever made. ME2 and DA2 already have been messengers of things to come.

So, before EA finally converts Bioware to a trash game generator, I want to see the legend one last time.

A betatester already spoilert me that SW:TOR is little much else than a WoW in space, and thats bad. But it will have Bioware quality storytelling, and thats always a great thing to have.

I havnt seen 500 on in a LONG time.. thats why im worried when other hard core players are talking about trying these other games, should they not come back it would be a huge hit.

I'm still completely confused as to why this game hasn't gone freemium. People seem to be falling for the BS concept, so maybe that would save this game a lot of people have forgotten/don't remember.

We need to band together and get Smedley to do something with Vanguard. Go on the Vanguard facebook page and post his email and lets take a stand about getting more devs and content and maybe even F2P.

    His email is here jsmedley@soe.sony.com

Email him all you Vanguard fans. Let's take a stand. Get this email out on the Vanguard/soe Facebook page for all those to see and tell them to start the resistance!

even though a huge fan, sad truth is that it doesn't deserve to survive..

I used to claim they should be marketing it more, that somehow this was one out of many factors leading to the continuation of its sad state..it is not i have come to think..this is a complex, group oriented, immensely huge yet non hand holding MMO..in an era of Rift, post cata WoW, etc..am using themeparks on purpose, as it doesn't offer PvP..So when by now, sadly or happily, that's opinion, we have come to those being the norm, you make a choice..either you keep Vanguard as it was and watch it fall, or change it..reduce the difficulty of mobs, so its no longer group oriented..find ways to delude players into a feeling of having your hands held..design a couple of quests per region that allow npcs to teleport you (and back) to areas within the same map yet off the trail to show you why huge can be nice..and so on..and most of all, and this is a whole chapter onto its own, fix that damn UI..a customer 'may' download addons, but a customer sure retains that negative first look from a huge UI with minimal functionality and almost zero customisation..a bad start right there..first impressions are that for a reason.

Again, you or i may love it as it is..or not..thats opinion..but games are business and businesses run on target groups..current target group, the MMO one, sees more reasons to shy away from this one than stay. And even if you agree with me, even though your opinion may differ on a personal level, do you know why this cannot be? Because just like SWG, we are gonna have everybody, including those that never played it, whining about post NGE equivalents, and Der Smed (whom i detest) ruining their game..as if right now they are playing it..which they are not..human nature at its finest. And this DOES go into consideration..they don't dare do an "NGE" equivalent in Vanguard, precisely because people will whine..so it will stay like that, until..well..  :)

And if you think i am wrong,or too harsh, just pay attention to all the whining going on here, for games people play, and just as much for games they don't, and as such have no right posting on..if this site is a good indicator of the average gamer..i find myself justified..SOE may have started their vicious circle all on their own, but this one is on the customer base as much as on them.

I dont think its just Vanguard, but the whole of SOE.

SWG is closing, DCUO didnt work and is going F2P. SOE need to do something cos they cant be making much money from the die hard EQ/EQ2/Vanguard players.....will SOE survive?

I have no doubt they will but SoE's reputation, earned or not, is making it harder on them right now.  You did forget Planet Side 2 though it too will be F2P/cash shop.  SoE's major ace is Everquest Next.  Say what you want about SoE but they currently have more innovation in one title than other games do combined.  I have doubt all these features will be in EQN.

Just not worth my time anymore.

THere is nothing like vanguard out there today other than eq ( maybe eq2 ) and nothing coming out anytime soon. The only thing that may be in Vanguards niche would be 38 studios MMO, but I seriously doubt it, it will be more aimed to the mainstream MMO audience ( like tor and gw2 ).

I hold high hopes for 38 studio's, because of who's behind it. Started by a fan who wanted to make the game of his dreams.

Well we'll just have to wait and see. There's alot of money and talent behind it. There is also a single player rpg being released very soon thats a prequel to the mmo it's called "Kingdoms of Amalur"

That should give us an idea of  what to expect, as far as quality goes.

People have been doomsaying about Vanguard since launch.  It's still around.  I doubt that SWTOR or GW2 will much affect it; if people are staying subscribed to Vanguard now, they'll stay subscribed even if they play that other stuff.

What I do have doubts about is what'll happen when EQNext launches, but that's at least three years away by my reckoning.

Nothing new, but I think Vanguard should become more solo-friendly in some way... I don’t mean anything global, because global changes will kill Vanguard (not as product but as itself).

Probably it’s possible to increase Solo and Small Group Quest rewards (for example, more gear… not  "strong" (!) gear… but Some gear). In this way the game will not become easier and player will not become strong enough to go through the Dungeon full of 3-4 dot mobs, but he will receive a better possibility to survive in common situations, receive an additional motivation and positive feelings.

(Alternative is an existing Crafting… but a lot of people don’t like Crafting. And me too. I want to feel free in what to do. I want to have a choice. At least in game… :) )

Mostly it is a psychological moment… but it is important.

Probably, such "psychological moments" will help Vanguard to survive.

    P.S. Sorry for my English…

    Thanks, done.

edit: not only done but I received a reply...

    my note and his reply...

    Sovrath (my bit):

    Hello,

I am writing you as a frequent poster at mmorpg.com<http://mmorpg.com> but also as a casual
    Vanguard player.

Lately there has been a lot of talk about Vanguard, especially since there were some posts
indicating that Sony might throw a small bit of attention to Vanguard.

I understand the issues behind the game and even why it isn't being actively developed but
suspect that if Sony were to actually support the game publicly, update it, give it some
attention and let it be known (if indeed this is the case) that you won't be closing it any
time soon, then it would get more players.

As you might know, players are loathe to play a game that they suspect will be closed.
They don't want to put the time and investment into a game that won't be around.

And simply put, Vanguard, even with its issues, is probably the best pve game on the market.
At least for players who are not interested in the direction that theme park games have gone.
Personally I hate how theme park games have become little more than relay races between
quest hubs and npc's with little icons atop their heads.

What I love about Vanguard is the huge world and the sense of exploration. On top of that it
    has very interesting classes.

In any case, I just wanted to drop your offices a line and indicate that Vanguard is still
talked about and still regarded as being a great game though it has issues. As it stands now,
I have a station pass but will most likely drop it and just stick with my Vanguard subscription
as I feel it is the better game in your stable of games. At least for my taste.

    Thank you for your time.

    Reply:

Stay tuned. You will be happy soon. Maybe a few months before we announce our plans
but we have a big surprise in store.
