I just logged in after many months and there is still no content.
Lv. 18 Conjurer, I kill Dodo. I tried to take on a Lv. 20 deer, it obliterated me. Lv. 18 Dodo I can kill, they arent worth it. 150 exper for a Lv. 18 dodo, 75 for a Lv. 14 and I can kill them 5 times faster, assuming they don't put me to sleep. Not a shot at the game either. They use a sleep attack. If they get in 4 kicks I'm dead, even a 14. So my best plan is level 12-15 Dodo for 60 - 75 exper each. Here is the catch. I need 13000 to level. I looked for something else to kill, found Lv. 12-15 stuff, marmots, digging things that look like badgers, then a few Lv. 18 Dodo. Next in sequence were level 72 Dragons, then it went to Lv. 24 stuff. Yes, the 72 dragons insta popped me and sent me back to camp.
I did see new quest NPC's. I never took a look. After 2 hrs or so, I CTD'ed, decided to go to thier forums but according to the message I hadn't confirmed a login for 30 days so I couldnt use the forums. This after they got me to pick a name and register to thier forums and login to them. So, I dunno??
This game still beats all other games hands down in character graphics. Content, not so much. It's a shame, all they need to do is add more leve quests, like 5 times what you get now. They don't know if they want to be quest based, themepark or sandbox. The open world PvE is barebones, so it isnt sandbox, there are bare bones leve quests so it isn't quest based, the opening cutscene storyline dies off so there is no themepark. The population is respectable but it might be the lack of subscription fee playing more of a role there.
I didnt want to be negative this time any more than I did when I bought the game but there is just so little to work with.
A lot of the content that has been added is geared towards R30+ and End game. So I can completely understand what a newer or lower level player complains about.
All the changes coming from 1.18 and on are absolutely great. I love it, but I think it's really hard for a new person to take part in that. I think SE has decided to work on the 30+ content up to release of 2.0. I'm pretty sure they're going ot have quest hubs like other MMOS in order to ease the transition.
I would say if you have a R 30+ character, you might want ot come back and try it out, if your'e lower than that, it might take a lot of getting used to.
However, if you do a little research online, it's extremely easy to go from R 1-30 in two to three days. Here's a suggestion, on weekends, form either a leve party with peopel your same level, each of you pick up 4-8 leves in a given area and do them together. You will get a party bonus and chain bonus for killing the mobs. At R40, doing 2 hours worth of leves will get you 2 levels.
You can also form a leveling party and venture out into the world and chain mobs like you would in FFXI. You can also use the Party > Search (feature) to see if anyone has formed a group.
There's actually a lot you can do, it's just that FFXIV does a horrible job of explaining the obvious to new comers. Of Course, it's not obvious to new comers, only veterens like myself who've been playing the game for 8 of the 12 months it's been out.
the BIGGEST thing i recommend is getting into a nice social linkshell. It's a difference between night and day. FFXIV was solo fiendly when it released because you could do the leves by yourself. Not anymore, many of the changes the last 4 months make this game much more group friendly.
My 2 cents.
PS - Once you finish the 8 leves you have in your journal. They automatically refresh at the Adventurer's Guild leve county. You can go pick up 8 more until your saved up leves are 0. You get 4 leves every 12 hours. I currently have 62 leves saved up. On weekends, I form leve parties for my lower level classes and do 16 of them in a row....
PS2 - Try to get to 30 ASAP and you can do a lot of the Grand company quests and get your choco... Things really open up if you have a personal Choco.
I would still be hard pressed to recommend this game to anyone, especially since SE is going to start charging subs in a month or 2 (before, I could say it's temp b2p so go for it). The fact is if you didn't like it before, chances are you still won't now.
They've added a lot of new content, but I still find it hard to get too much into it personally. The UI is still frustrating. I think everything has been slightly improved, but not enough. That said, if you're on the fence, there's still no sub now, and you can probably find it for cheap at stores.
I think what was said about finding a good active linkshell is really key. The game gets boring really fast solo. Playing with people helps a lot.
Honestly I think they made it pretty clear that in their mind the game won't be attractive to the general audience before 2.0 is released.
If you're one of the few that belong to the tiny playerbase of today and enjoy the game for what it is, there's enough patches and content waiting for you.
If you're a normal MMO player that expects a certain quality in their product the 1.0 FFXIV won't be able to offer that. 2.0 is where it's at, assuming it can pull off the remarkable feat it needs to. Stay skeptical, wait for the new version to roll around, check out general impressions and re-reviews (the western media will tear the game apart if it has flaws, so if they like it then its a good indicator that you should give it a go).
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

I am very much enjoying the game but absolutely agree with your comment. I think that I am in a very small percentage of people who can enjoy it for what it is right now. My knee-jerk reaction to my experience, is to recommend it, but then i have to step back and remember that I have always been a different animal when it comes to mmorpgs. I still prefer MUDs and UO, AC1, etc...
And even though I am an old man now (ok not THAT old...) and have extremely limited time to play these games (8 to 10 hours per week at most), I still prefer games with extremely long "grinds", and slower gameplay mechanics. I love games where you only upgrade gear 2 or 3 times over ythe course of 50 levels or so.. things like that. I still enjoy a good fast paced action/loot based game, just not for my main game usually.
There is alot to do, but as someone else has stated it is about R30+. That being said there is a new open world instance/area in limsa for R15+.
Also stated previously, if you want to try and stick at it then find a nice social link shell, it makes all the difference and folks are very helpfull with gera and info etc.
Grinding solo will get you no where really unless very determined. You can noe do as many leves as you like as long as you have saved up a few to do. You now get 4 every 12 hours, so if you not on for a day or 2 your looking at 16 leves to do, plus if you dont do the 16 they soon start to add up. They give goos sp but even better in a party.
The game atm really is a marmite game, You either love it or hate it.
Myself I am enjoyer the slower pace of gaming without the constant hunger for the best loot out their. I have a good social shell to chat to and party with, the GFX and animations are awsome and some of the most intersting monster models.
2.0 is on its way and SE have a story arc to take us their, if the game lookis interesting to you, give it more than 5 minutes and you might be supprised.
The game is a thousandfold better than it was before 1.18 and has tons of stuff to do now , this is probably the best time ever to check it out , the last 2 patches are huge jumps in gameplay and you might as well check it out while its still free .
Subject says it all, to those of you that are subscribed is the game polished and fun now after these updates?
My opinion is to wait until 2.0, right now all the changes are stepping stones leading to where the game will be. If you want to experience how FFXIV "should" have been on release then that would be 2.0 Square Enix has made that rather clear. If you decide to play it now then expect it to drastically change as it progresses towards 2.0.
Don’t take my word for it, just read the letters sent out to the community and you will see how much work still needs to be done.
I'm having a blast in the game. Really enjoying myself a lot. I've actually decided to stick it out for the next year and enjoy all the patches they put in and all the pre-2.0 events and such. I think 2.0 is going to be amazing and I can't wait.
I personally find it worth it, I think it's worth my $12.99 a month easily, as it's keeping me entertained. They've been adding quests and such, it seems, to the lower levels and if you have friends to play with or a Linkshell, I've found it doesn't get as boring as many other games.

Yes! It is awesome now, so far at least, the main quest line is legit. There is that wretched grind but you can just party up and level fast. I belive there are 10 or so servers, three of the servers are full. I joined one of the full ones and inside the town there are just crowded people. This game does have a lot more player base then people would expect because no one really gives about it anymore.
People saying the game is not busy are trolling. It gets measured in Chocobo's with a 1 to 3 system. I'm on Saronia and it's seen as a low pop server with half a Chocobo? Even Saronia has pop though. FF14 doesn't have 3 mill or anything, I'm kind of glad it doesn't. I play a Conjurer and if FF14 had 3 mill I'd be getting a nerf, I just know it. When I hit --AREA-- and smack some puks, they die, they die fast. Bringing up an observation about the FF franchise that I seem to miss. In most of the FF games you could end game, make your characters so sickeningly, redonculously over powered is was comical but a hella lot of fun to do and play.
I came back for 1.9 after not playing for nearly a year, so I will you give you my impressions from that perspective. The game has gotten better. That much is undeniable, but I still find the game to be extremely boring.
I started fresh and I ended up hitting 50 in about three weeks. I did all the Grand Company quests, did both instanced dungeons, tried Ifrit, did all of the storyline, all of the class quests I had access to, mid-level NM's, and dabbled with Spiritbond/coffer hunting in the beastman strongholds. I attempted to enjoy crafting as well, but in the end I managed all of about two hours before I decided watching paint dry would be more engaging. None of the content besides the instances felt very compelling to me.
The game has issues which I find to be more or less gamebreaking. I feel like I need to say this is only my opinion based on my experience in the last month or so.
1.) Group combat for XP, Spiritibond, and coffer hunting is an absolute clusterfuck requiring zero group coordination. Typically, someone goes and pulls as many mobs as humanly possible and then the group AOE's the shit out of them. That is the strategy. No CC, no careful pulling, no tactics. Just pull as many as you can and then AOE them. It's absolutely mind numbing.
2.) The UI and the ability to only show one action bar. It's simply a huge pain in my ass to scroll between multiple action bars to see cooldowns on the multiple buffs and abilities I have. It doesn't take some great amount of skill to do, but after killing mob #7000 to hit rank 50, it becomes extremely tiresome.
3.) Windowed-fucking-fullscreen and the ability to change graphics from within th game. Please SE, fix this.
4.) Crafting and gathering. If you want to make yourself bored on purpose then do either of these. Both are accompanied by a minigame that boils down to pressing a buton over and over again. If you had a turbo gamepad, then you could completely automate the crafting process. That's how awesome it is. SE should include a subscription of Netflix with this game, because that is the only way I found either of these activities tolerable.
Previously, I would have said to give this game a go as it was only 15 dollars for the box, and I will continue to do so until they begin to charge for the game in December, but I don't feel comfortable telling potential players to go out and sub up for this game right now. The game is great for the people that have played since launch, but I don't feel like it offers much to a brand new player.
They should scrap the game now and cut their losses. The only logical reason why they would continue to keep this game running under these miserable conditions, and in this unrecoverable state is to try to save face.
Will it ever be worth getting? Thats the real question and I figure not.
Im staying as far away as possible, and with other AAA mmorpgs coming right around the corner, I cant see why anyone would focus their attention on this crap.
Funny thing is, I played Rift for 5 months and it felt like WoW endgame. Donkey chasing a carrot over and over again.
Played SWTOR BETA, felt like WoW type combat, interface but with voice acting. I'm still going to get Star Wars, heck i've pre ordered the digital copy. The only reason being, I love Bioware and their focus on story. I'm treating SWTOR as a single player RPG in an MMORPG.
What's the relevance of all this? I've been playing FFXIV for the last 6 months.... Of thre three games I've mentioned, FFXIV holds my attention more and have higher hopes for the future than any other AAA game coming out.
I may get GW2 because it's free after initial purchase, but if you were to ask me where my heart is currently, no questions about it, it's FFXIV.
Returned after 1.19. Made anew character. The game is still incredibly tedious and boring. Grinding and doing repetitive levequests for 30 lvls is not fun. They added some things to do at higher lvls but you can find much more and better in other games, even free to play. Imo wait for 2.0. You will be impressed by the graphics for the 1st week and after that you will be forcing yourself to log in.

Sounds like combat needs re-balanced. I would think an 18 shouldn't have to drop to 14s to get XP.
Is the issue armor? Might they be designing this for group grind, where you find a tank and duo the grinding?
Ken Fisher - Semi retired old fart Network Administrator, now working in Network Security. I don't Forum PVP. If you feel I've attacked you, it was probably by accident. When I don't understand, I ask. Such is not intended as criticism.
As an old school FFXI player I too have been looking for that next big mmo that captured my heart like ffxi did. Rift has potential but the devs decided they wanted to be another WoW clone instead of their own game. I fear that once wow players get there hands on SW:TOR it will turn out the same way.
I'm sorry to say but ffxiv 2.0 is not the answer to anything. They can add all the content they want, the only reason people played that game for so long was because it was free. Once they charging FFXIV is going to be a ghost town, because when people have to pay, they expect to get their money's worth.
However all is not lost fellow FF fans, as there exists another mmo that emphasizes group play and community over soloing. A new game that has graphics that easily rivals FFXIV and puts the current crop of mmos to shame. A game where you actually get to fight the monsters instead of clicking around and waiting, or having to dance around them. That game is called Tera Online and that's what I'll be playing and expecting many others to follow when FFXIV goes bust.
The best thing about Tera is that when it launches in the NA/EU it will already have a year's worth of content and polish on it. If Square was smart enough to not launch this game before it was ready then we probably wouldn't even be in this situation right now.

Conjurer have less HP than Botanists so yea, they are kind of squishy. My Armor is hodge podge but I just broke 100K Gil and most armor is redonculously expensive. It's also about knowing what element to hit them with. I tried a few other classes and didnt fare much better really. Most have no heal spell so you wait for HP to regen or you get a minimal heal but pay for it in other ways, like Pugalest. Each has a drawback and all seem to grind faster when you go down 3 or 4 levels. I have no doubt if you grouped and ganked stuff it would go faster, it does in every MMO but I'm preoccupied enough it isnt an issue right now.

From what I hear there are quests and events that are available now in 1.9, but won't be available in 2.0 and won't be repeated.
Something like intro stuff or prologue things. So if you're interested in the lore and want a buildup you may want to look at it now while it's free.
"TO MICHAEL!"
Sounds like combat needs re-balanced. I would think an 18 shouldn't have to drop to 14s to get XP.
Is the issue armor? Might they be designing this for group grind, where you find a tank and duo the grinding?
I fully expect the product to be at least as good as what everyone wanted, next year.
But for now, if you really don't have any ties in the game, hold off for at least six months.
The game will never be worth playing until they just throw out what they have and start over.
