From what I've heard, EQ Next will be much more like a sandbox, e.g., world housing, huge worlds, etc.
I'm very excited.
I'm hopeful and I hope this is true. I'd prefer there be no cash shop but if there is, it better be done right. Don't ask me what right is. I haven't found a good cash shop yet.

Smedley tried to copy WOW and failed. I'm betting they will try to copy the success other companies have had with f2p and fail also.
When I was a kid, all the boys were wearing vans. I begged and begged and begged my parents to buy me vans, and finally my mother did to shut me up. Well, they didn't fit my feet right and they became sore and blistered. I never was able to work them in. That's Smedley. I was Smedley, at that time..if that makes sense. Since then I've learned to follow my own path and not be smedley.
I'll definitely look into it when there is more information available, but I can't say excited when there really isn't information available other than the game is getting made.
Having played Everquest upon launch, I enjoyed the game because there was nothing really quite like it at the time (well, UO but I digress), and I preferred pve vs pvp which the game catered to. That was over a decade ago and times have changed for me. I enjoy pvp now more than pve, and other games headed our way (Guildwars 2) has my attention.
That said, Planetside 2 is headed our way from Sony. I liked Planetside, and this new version will be free to play as well, just like Everquest Next will probably be. The thing is, Smedly himself mentioned how he was very keen on how League of Legends handles their free to play system and cash shop.
And I enjoy the hell out of League of Legends. So. If Sony is willing to release both Planetside 2 and Everquest Next as free to play games using the League of Legends transaction system, where everything of worth to the game can be obtained free within the game, and cash is used to obtain different looks / skins for models as well as be used as a shortcut to gain game related items - I'm all for it.
I would play it, probably spend a bit of money, and enjoy doing so.
A model of MMO subscription that takes any threat of a ban and negates it; inviting every single griefer on planet Earth to create an account, abuse decent players, and destroy the MMO from within with no fear of retribution that a simple randomly generated email account can't solve.
F2P MMOs have universally been a shit hole of griefers. Never found a F2P mmo yet that wasn't rotten to the core with griefers. MMO's != MOBAs.

Griefers in LotRO? DDO? Lucent Heart? so on so forth..?
That's a horrible generalization and false.
I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.
I only like vanity stuff in a cash shop, not short cuts and such...
I will look forward to it, until I have reason to not be real excited about it, and hopefully that doesn't happen. As for Smed copying WoW before, I don't really see it so much...EQ2 was rushed out before WoW, and EQ was headed in WoWs direction, thus what WoW became, they just sped up the evolution of EQ imo....As I say that, when EQ started having some instances, they were ok, but then I got to where I wasn't a big fan of them...Now people live on instances, and I miss open dungeons and open content...So if EQ is going back to a open world, heck yeah I am excited....Just hope they don't alternate pay ruin it for me...I am fine with B2P/P2P/F2Pp with vanity shop...As soon as you can buy an advantage, it will probably turn me off...how much, I will have to see.

Yes Yes and Never Played It. LOTR was miserable after 2 hours of enduring nonsense "I haz da ring" garbage starting. DDO? I can't count the number of times I got a group together then some asshat goes afk 10 minutes in. It's a garbage model.

Oh so, if someone goes AFK they should get banned? Anyone can go AFK in any game whenever they feel like it, be it in WoW, EVE Online, or DDO. All you do is not group with them again. Also, actual griefing will get you banned in DDO and LotRO because they have moderators.

Everquest 1 was the gem of MMO's to me. I have played so many MMO's after and I still to this day miss it. However, I am torn because this is SOE. SOE is garbage and in it for the cash grab. The GM's are all lazy and unwilling to help and sometimes it even takes over a week to get your petition answered.
I hate to give SOE any money as they will probably just ruin this game but if it is looking good I will probably suck up my pride and just get the game.

I don't think it is fair to label ALL of SOE,i happen to know they have some of the most amazing employees in the industry.I think what is wrong with SOE is a few bad apples,Semdley being a huge part of the problem. The problem for us as users is thta a guy like Smed can tell his superiors which are few ,look at me i am making us more money using cash shops and that is the overlaying factor in running a business.
I do not think much at all of either EQ1 or EQ2's design, there is some good ideas in both but over all too many mistakes in design. To have players hanging out on level cap players just raiding loot is really a sign of how badly a game is designed.I have been playing BOTH those games for many years and i have not seen SOE make ANY moves or additions to game play,it is always the same old every day and it gets boring.
I can use FFXI as an example ,that game has AT least 10 content ideas outside the normal, this gives players things to do.Also when you make a character design you DON'T copy the Eq/EQ2 design so that p;layers hit level cap and they are bascially done. You also do NOT create most of your content for end cap,you make CONTENT ideas throughout the game at ALL levels so players have FUN and are not in the constant rush to hit level cap.By content i don't mean more dungeon loot raiding, that is old school and has been way over done.
IMO ALL the developers miss the entire point of game design >>>FUN.The BEST thing that could happen to these games is to totally remove end game crap and yes it can be done i could design it myself so no reason these bigshots can't do it.
I do not see SOE making any changes at all to their game design, what i do see is SOE/Smed will make changes that affect more profits from cash shops.Smed has already made it certain they are going cash shop all the way,so if this holds true i will not be supporting anymore SOE online games.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Seriously you're worried about security from only SOE? I hate to break it to you but if any of the MMO's on this site get targeted by hackers for personal information they will all be in the same shoes as everyone else. If your computer is connected to the internet you are vulnerable. The best companies in the world including world governments are prone to hackers and not one of them could stop them if they have there heart in doing so. The only thing they can do is make it harder but this day in age when governments are funding hacker groups to attack one another the only way to be safe is to unplug yourself from society. Which we all know isn't going to happen so life goes on and we continue to play these games.

Well I hope they improve animation and animation pathfinding, it was bad, no wonder why they lost out to WOW.
Guild Wars 1 and LoL good cash shops.
I don't believe a word of what Smedley says.
An honest review of SW:TOR 6/10 (Danny Wojcicki)

Not especially excited, no. But I am intrigued.

What happened to the official site at
www.everquestnext.com !!! careful with the clicking, the site may be infected !!!
Google tells me the site is full of malware...
That's not an offiical page, just some dude's blog.
Guess thats why nothing gets fixed...

Ditto. 2013 is too far out for my radar.

Nope. EQ had terrible graphics, even for it's time and was masochistic. EQ2 was horrendously boring from the start.

Nope and besides there are more interesting MMORPG on the way and with all the security thing concering SoE,I don't feel them worthy of my trust .
