What so bad about Origin that you would rather pass on playing a game for free?
It scans your HD looking for all installed programs and sends this list to EA. Its a major breach of privacy , and you must agree to this in order to install Origin.
I hate all this data collecting that is going on lately. And would rather avoid installing such programs if its possible.

You don't need Origin.
Also, unless you are some high ranking person of power, or some celeb, CEO , etc., I would not worry about information gathering. I mean what exactly would someone do with a list of installed programs or other trivial information beyond using it for marketing?

I just oppose this. Its like being vegetarian.
I am against slow degradation of our civil liberties. Just a matter of oppinion.

It is becoming more common - if you read through those agreements that many of us just click accept without reading a word. Under the premise of looking for programs that might allow you to cheat, they scan and monitor what applications you have installed...have seen such statements in several games of late.
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?
Steam at least works correctly. ORIGIN is a piece of donkey droppings. I will not buy another EA game that forces you to use ORIGIN until they fix it so that is works at least as well as Steam.
Will I require an Origin account in addition to a SWTOR account?
Yes, you will require an active Origin account in addition to a Star Wars: The Old Republic account. You can create a new Origin account by going to the Origin Account Registration page, entering your email address in the appropriate space and clicking “Start my EA Profile.” This will take you to a screen where you can create your EA Master ID and set your password. You can also start a new Origin account by logging in with either your Facebook or PlayStation Network accounts, or by downloading and running the Origin client for the first time.
first no origin is not required for swtor, nor will it ever be required. you can use origin if you want, if you dont want to you can just use the installer from bioware.
second if you have a swtor forum account then you have a ea account and a origin account. they linked all three for you so its just one password.
third who cares. i dont care about ea or about origin. never even been to their sites as im gonna exclusively use the bioware site for everything i do with the game.
fourth is I believe ea has announced origin is no longer gonna scan your complete hard drive anymore. not sure why they ever wanted it to myself, {mod edit}
{mod edit} There's people that actually actively try to keep every tiny bit of privacy left intact.
I'm not using my real-names anywhere in the net, not even my eMail-adresses are linked to my real name, adress, or whatever. I don't use a login-names twice, I don't use any form of social crapworks like Fatzebook or whatever, I don't use my CC in the net but only anonymous payment methods like PaySafe cards, GTCs etc. I've hardblocked APIs from google and other services that crawl through your browser-history, I use onion-router-networks like TOR, etc, etc, etc...
So, why should I install a tool on my PC that gets updated regularily and may change the way it scans your system somewhere down the road and starts scanning for personal data, etc.
Some of us actually do care, what companies should be allowed to do, and what not.
Hi everyone! We've seen some continuing confusion over this topic. Some of you have quoted text that appears on the Pre-Order Page that indicates you'll need to install Origin software to download the game. We are working to update the information on that page: you will not be required to install the Origin software in order to download, patch, or play the game (even during Early Game Access). You'll do that through our own site and launcher.

what you got to ask yourself is, why would anyone worry about them knowing what you are playing?
If one has nothing to hide then one should not even give a shit about origin snooping or not, its done in an instant anyhow and the only time it would be an issue is if said software was slowing a pc down or messing with gameplay online.
Yes snooping is a cheeky way to gather marketing info etc, and one would rather such shit being done, but if you know ur own mind anyhow and dont buy shit spammed into ones email box who would honestly royaly give a frack?
I dont normaly like to put the emphasis on this being said but normaly most people who are quick to attack such stuff is usually harboring pirated/cracked material on ones pc and that people is probably anyway about 80% of users of pc's

Again.
Its a mater of principle.
Suppose goverment made a new law where they will enter everyones home (at random times) when you are not present. And rummage trough your stuff. And if they find let say grass, they will be able to arrest you.
Does it means that people that oppose this areautomatically grass smokers ?
No
People simply dont like their privacy broken. They have no buisness rummaging trough my home.

Most F2P MMO's have their own loader as well...
No, you don't need to install Origin to download the beta client.
Did they require Origin on this last build? I haven't had to use Origin for previous beta bulids, but I haven't installed this last build.

No, SWTOR does not require ORIGIN (at this time).
Let's party like it is 1863!
Not sure what Origin is; assumably some "Steam-like" thing that hangs out in your system tray. If so, then nope.
You have to install a launcher, like any MMO game, but I've never seen it do anything other than launch the game.
no you do not need origin to play this game at all..
There are several threads that state this, yet the site's FAQ states this: http://www.swtor.com/info/faq#170974

Which is still kind of funny, because there is a 53 page thread with some good info in it over there: http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=574007
It mainly deals with the client...but an Origin account without the Origin client, is still an Origin account.

Not for beta, no. But not for the game at all either, you just need an origin account.
(which does not require downloading / installing the software)
