I'm positive somebody has pointed this out. I'm going to do it again anyway. * SW:ToR is not a sandbox. * SW:ToR does not have heroic Jedi that can kill anything. * There are no non-combat classes.
SW:ToR is a 'classic' themepark MMORPG, with an actual story that you might want to know about instead of quest hubs you want to complete.
** edit ** Some clarification - Jedi aren't weak, they just aren't gods. The story line thing has nothing to do with SWG...it might have a story line, I have no idea. I was referring to theme park mmorpg having quests, not stories.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
SWTOR is nothing like SWG but then again SWG was not like what fans remember it.
I was a fan, and remember it pretty well, it needed some balancing and content...But they didn't have to remake the game to do those things...
To the OP, no it will not, if you are looking for SWG pre-NGE, don't disappoint yourself.
swtor is a themepark, with voiceover questing and personal story added to it....The good or bad in that is up to the individual, I myself see both in it, but I like some sandbox in my mmos also...So I have not seen enough to see how the game will fare for me in the longer term.
Will it solve your SWG NGE anguish? Well, that is for you to decide, but I can tell you for me, it felt really good. While the games do not seem very similar. It's Star Wars... that just felt good. After the SWG, I felt bare also, but it turns out, I wasn't missing the sandbox or game as much as I was missing the IP. So I say, buy it, and try it out. You may love it. I'm 30 and have grown up with Star Wars, so it's always a challenge NOT to like a Star Wars game. I will say that the NGE did win that challenge I might add...lol
No. I suggest EQ2 or DCUO if you enjoy SOE games. They have the lack of content and bugs you've come to expect.
It also sounds as if you're looking for another mythical "sandbox" game - this isn't it. Don't be disapointed that it isn't there - it was NEVER going to be.
If you are looking for another SWG pre NGE game this will not be it. You won't be able to spend your entire game time being a dancer, image designer, creature handler or anything like that. You won't be able to plop a house down in the middle of Tattoine or build a city with your buddies. You won't have to go to a cantina for buffs or to a med center for healing. If those are the kind of things that you like to have dominate your game time then TOR is not the game for you.
Where TOR really shines is in all the things that SWG never got right. The leveling process is so much more engaging. In order to gain skill points in SWG as a bounty hunter you had to grind boring NPC missions along with many hours of slaughtering pickets. In TOR you have an entire story that you are a part of along with choices that affect your character's relationships with everyone. The NPCS you deal with are fully voiced and helps add more of a feel of imersion than just reading text from an emotionless NPC. This part really excites me because the levelng process in SWG was so painfully boring and dull.
There is no alpha classes in this game and there should never be in an MMORPG. Troopers are just as viable in PVP as jedi are which was not the case in SWG. In SWG, at least on Corbantis, jedi were so dominating that it ruined the GCW. Getting beyond the fact that jedi should never have been in that game to begin with, they made jedi so overpowered that a pack of them could wipe out an entire group of non force users. This won't be the case with TOR.
Can't really go into much beyond that because there is an NDA in place. I have no idea if players will want to socialize in cantinas or any of the other things that you asked because there is no way of answering that until the game launches.
Just so you don't get disappointed later.. about 90% of players and NPCs do actually have a sword (or other bladed melee weapon) in TOR.
LOL no. The most completely false statement I have read in several days..
/golfclap
well, i guess i should append that with "from what i've seen", which is not the entire game. i also assume that if you start out in a trooper area and all you see are troopers, they probably all have guns.
As will bounty hunters, smugglers and imperial agents. So yeah, you got that one completely wrong.
Yea, they've pretty much said all along, swg fans...this isn't another swg. While I LOVED swg, I had to face the fact that this will be a different game. All of that said, I will say this is a much more polished version of NGE. So, to those that enjoyed NGE, then this is the perfect game. I'm enjoying it, doesn't meet my sandbox needs, but I respect what they've done with this game for sure.
Incognito www.incognito-gaming.us "You're either with us or against us"
I have deliberately avoided this game till now as I try not to get overhyped about a game (dead island being my last culprit), but I am looking for some unbiased information regarding this game.
I played SWG, pre NGE and it is still the best game I have played. I wondered how many of the features in SWG would be in SWTOR, such as player housing, crafting unique items, ability to tame anything ingame, socialness of cantinas.
I have been living under a rock in regards to MMOs for the past 6 months and don't want to read reviews or look on youtube (tend to be fanboys or heavily influenced by money) and MMORPG has always been a place to tell it to me straight.
Will the SWTOR compare to SWG pre NGE?
TL;DR : Played SWG, does SWTOR compare to it?
You got ur own ship for that
companions can craft it for you
Dont know nething bout that so i cant say
thats all i know i do believe there r cantinas to socialize on planet
and i dont have the hype virus like most off you have but im realy looking foward for it.
btw i got a message from them that i have been selected for beta but im not sure its genuine so can ne1 tell me if swtor@email.swtor.com is the real deal?
If part of your reason for liking SWG was that you were a Star Wars fan then you will probably like SWTOR. It is a great game, and it is fun. It just isn't anything like Pre-NGE SWG so don't go looking for the sandbox elements that made SWG what it was. No game since has done what SWG did. If you enjoy themeparks, and you like Star Wars then enjoy. If you despise themepark games then you will hate this game.
You can get your own ship, but there is no customization or decorating available. It's very similar to EVEs Captains Quarters, but on a much larger scale. You can access galaxy maps, look at and talk to your companions if they have a quest and interact with crafting stations.
You can craft many things in the game and if you salvage the items you craft, eventually you will learn a new recipe for a slightly higher grade of the same item. There is nothing really unique about the crafted items because eventually you will have the same exact recipes that every other player of your profession has.
No taming.
The cantinas are nothing like the cantinas in SWG. People go there to talk to a quest NPC or for a place to log out, but even in the busier areas it's more like hanging out in Orgrimmar or Ironforge than a Mos Eisley Cantina.
As others have pointed out, this game has very few similarities to SWG other than the IP. It really is KOTOR online, fantastic story with meh gameplay.
Actually they are. They are also swords. Look up "sabre" in the dictionary, virtually every definition will read as "type of sword".
Or if you think dictionaries are bad, look it up "lightsaber" on Wikipedia and you'll find that the first sentence reads "laser sword" (this description dates from original design from the original movie).
Or if those aren't enough, look up Wookiepedia - the star wars wiki - and you'll find the same thing.
If after all this you're still not sure, feel free to call Lucasarts and ask them why Lightsabers - which according to you are not bladed - are referred to as either "single-bladed" or "dual-bladed". Because, honestly, if you're right and they have no blades, that would be really fracking stupid.
Anyhow, there are a whole lotta swords in TOR. 50% of player classes use them as their primary weapon. I believe that most other classes use them as secondary. Most NPCs carry blades as well which they will use in close combat, which is a lot of the combat given the way the combat system is set up (can't discuss due to NDA).
Percentages aside, my point was merely that if someone is tired of looking at swords, TOR will not provide the best escape given that one is likely to see swords A LOT.

TOR is nothing like pre-cu swg. One of the first things you'll probably notice is the lack of diversity in the races and classes. All you'll see running around in a main city like Coruscant are human looking jedi, troopers or smugglers, all with similiar gear and the same companions.
You will weep when you realize how dumbed down and generic this game is compared to old school swg.

Come on, real men don't weep or whine, they just register what's going on and move on, either to stay when they decide they like it or leave when it's not up to their taste. People who keep weeping or whining about the same stuff over and over again are usually of a different breed

Beginning to understand they are very seperate games, but wanted to know things like.
- Is there much emphasis on non-combat activities? (crafting, cantinas, exploring)
- Is there much chance to socialise? (Aka, not constant powerleveling to max level then going dungeons)
- Is this game gear based?
- How is the PvP? (or hopefully faction vs faction)
Didn't read the whole thread, but I think that some people already answered you. But here's my 2 pennies.
Nope, it's not like SWG pre-CU, best to see it as 2 completely different Star Wars MMO's.
It's a themepark MMORPG like WoW and LotrO, but with Bioware's typical storytelling questing implemented in it.
Crafting and exploring is ingame, and it has some twists and improvements upon crafting/exploring in other themepark MMO's, but it won't be on the same level as SWG.
Chance to socialise, that depends a lot upon the player community, hard to tell. I'd say as much chance if maybe something more than other themepark MMO's (more support for multiplayer questing and social points encouragement). Pazaak or sortlike games are on the wall of crazy, hard to tell when such things will be implemented though.
Gear plays an important role, yes. How important, only time can tell.
PvP can be found in the instanced Warzones and open-world PvP, with 'RvR lakes' style of faction PvP that has similarities with DAoC and WAR.
The ease with which predictions are made on these forums: Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."
Certain games you can't knock and are legacy's, for example, SWG, UO, DAOC...I personally didn't play UO or DAOC, but just from listening i'll put them in that catorogyr.
As these forums have proven time and again, you can knock any game, for the simple reason that what one MMO gamer might hold sacred and the best experience of his (gaming) life, another might have felt completely different or even garbage and a waste of time and (disk) space.
Some people had the time of their life in SWG, others loathed it. Some enjoyed EQ or UO immensely, while others disliked it intensely but had a great, fun time in WoW. And so on.

Humm. I thought we were finished with this type of thread after the initial announcement and the following 6 months to 2 years of development. Still, I think the OP has been answered very thoroughly, and what I am about to say is absolutely redundant:
No, TOR will not solve your SWG NGE anguish.
However, you are always welcome to try it out and if they eventually have a buddy key or invite system (or a free trial, though that's kind of hard for a story-driven game), I'll give you one.
Think KotOR with the ability to interact with other people (but without any real reason to do so).
Aside from, ya know, heroic quests, flashpoints, operations, heroic areas in each zone, open world pvp, ffa pvp lakes in many zones, social reward points for grouping with people that can be exchanged for items, and stuff like that. Other than that, though...no need to interact with people at all.

Some people don't see "any real reason" unless the game crumples you up into a little ball and slam dunks you into the Sun unless you flee, whimpering, to your companions because you're so damn weak on your own. Another sad fact.

And by that I don't meant that they made a sandbox that was polished.
I mean they started making the game from scratch as if the NGE was a good idea.
