Ok your comment doesnt make sense jedi who have fallen are are sith anakin started jedi went to sith finished jedi. Same with luke. my last comment still stands yoda made it clear there isnt a grey area
Yoda is not even born yet in this time frame. And if we want to get real RPish and silly about it, Yodas' opinion on the force is just one.
This is a different time frame. The lines are not as clear in this era. There is not just one master and one pupil. There are tonnes more Jedi and Sith in this era. Besides this point, in any era, the lines between good and evil are quite muddy and grey.
Do you have access to different powers becausr of these changed
You are changing your argument now. The game is what it is. Things work the way they should. This topic is about what side you are picking, not a ethical debate on light and dark side. Which side are you picking btw?
Im not changing anything the sith craved power and exersize powers that jedis do not. It not just physical change but a change in ideas and powers used

I'm not going to continue this debate with you. We will have to agree to disagree.
I find it funny you say say that, because it was that there isnt this that made my decision for me . There should be differences in classes and the way they work . Smugglers and agents should have grey area while classes based on extreme sides have a higher standard.

The debate ended a few posts ago. You are not playing this game, nothing is going to change with these complaints. Good luck on your future.
As I said, I'm going to try all 8, but I will probably roll Sith to begin, because my friends will be there.
I will be going Light side, with some "leeway" for romance as my Jedi Knight. Looking forward to tough decisions, but following my heart on most of them!
I do not like playing characters that are defined through the story as being idiots or whose story by the design of the game is made incomprehensible. As such, I'll be playing sith with likely more DS choices than light.
The problem with playing a Jedi in TOR is that the "light side" choices do not reflect the jedi code at all and there is no way to truly play "light side". The fact that you're constantly rewarded for murdering hundreds of people (who do not need to die) as a light jedi makes playing the class a total contradiction. There are also other story-specific things that can't be discussed by ME due to beta (but press can mention them) - let's just say that actually following the light side jedi code - as taught in game - results in wildly inconsistent decisions in LS/DS terms.
As an Imperial Agent (which i haven't played) I expect that i at least have a justifiable reason to kill countless people due to my job and affiliation. I'm more concerned with a character that makes sense and is realistically complex than with one that matches my own personal moral code.
TL;DR: I -the person behind the keyboard - believe that killing people when it can be avoided is evil. However, i can understand how an assassin may take pleasure or simply not care about killing innocents and not suffer consequences. I CAN'T understand how a monk devoted to peace and justice can kill innocents and not suffer consequences. Therefore i can't play play the latter and be immersed in the character.

I'm not even sure on what side I'll be. Since I'm into RPing as well, I just try to think of a character before creating it, and then I'll make the choices throughout the game that seem to suit the character's personality best. So I might not always be completely good or evil. There is still the path inbetween after all. But all of that depend on the type of character I want to RP at that time.
The alignment system in this game makes NO sense WHATSOEVER. First of all, it has absolutely no effect on gameplay, so I am not even sure what it's purpose is. Secondly, it completely goes against all of the lore to be a murdering bastard of a Jedi, and not flip over to the dark side. Not really sure what on earth they were thinking with this system.
Unfortunately, this is the least of this game's problems.
First of all, it has absolutely no effect on gameplay, so I am not even sure what it's purpose is.
There is lightside and darkside gear. However, i suspect it'll just be exact same stats with different looks. Even the dark side incfluence on your body is completely optional.
I've also heard that NPCs react to you based on choices you make. I can't confirm that.

My friends and I are playing Empire. We have one friend who is going to be playing Republic a bit moreso so we're having her set up a Republic Guild for us when we're bored or want to altaholic it a bit.
We're playing to play, it's really as simple as that. We're all older so we don't look at it all too strictly or even that it has to make sense all that much. We're simply looking forward to playing with friends and having a good time. We all played Horde side in WoW so that may have had some impact on the choice, but I think it's moreso based on the character classes available.
It's a good thing that BioWare will probably set up server types, ie PvE, PvP, RP, and even subsets inbetween. ie RP-PvP, Most companies learn from other companies successes and failures. The whole argument of black/white good/evil is more pronounced on the RP servers and to those folks playing on them I wish them the best. PvP purposes, meh, I'm not really sure any of it matters.
The best we can hope for is that classes will balance out and there won't be huge disparity of numbers between the two sides to the point of it effecting gameplay. I hope that they have thought ahead as to what to do if that were to happen.
i think the dark side will be more fun and cooler powers if you go all the way and be really bad but will find out going to try and be bad all the time

Unfortunately, this is the least of this game's problems.
So far it's been confirmed that it unlocks certain armors for each: dark and light.
Also I read somewhere that titles will come from your choices of how your character is aligned. The dreaded "Darth" title being an exclusive title for players to unlock.
But even if it's just cosmetic changes like pale skin and yellow eyes with dark and blue glow with light, it's more than enough for people to see a "evil" character in game as well as a "good" natured one. That in itself goes a long way in helping with things like oh say....ROLE PLAYING. You know some things that matter to people who are into it.
But for people like you who cannot for the life of themselves grasp this simple feature, housing I take it doesn't make sense to you either.

You're right that alignment unlocks different gear based on dark/light, but it's completely cosmetic. Titles as well will be based on your chosen path. Neither of those things change gameplay in the slightest.
My argument has nothing to do with roleplaying. I will most certainly roll on a roleplaying server if they make them available, and I enjoy housing in games quite a bit. I don't understand your point, those things have nothing to do with what I said, other than to further make my point that the alignment system has no purpose.
And by the way, if the purpose of the alignment system is for roleplaying, then why does it violate one of the fundamental principles of the entire mythology of Star Wars? The ENTIRE series of movies is about the path from good to evil and back again, and in this game, it has absolutely NO siginifcance whatsoever. You people who accept this lazy game mechanic are the reason that we get this cookie-cutter crap to begin with. Demand more.

My point is that this is a mythos about the morality of hundreds of individuals of an entire universe and how they relate to each other, not a single set of stories that chonicled the life of ONE jedi and his struggle with morality and how it effected those around him. If you want everyone to be THE ONE then it's no better than all the other cookie cutter mmos that try to make everyone feel like they are shaping an entire world, how underwhelming that must be if you cannot really do things that could really change things and how could an mmo of such magnitude be epic for anyone other than the first person who logged in?
Basically your alignment WILL effect your gameplay as you will have armor not available to everyone and that title you may receive may detour more than one potential PvP opponent from attacking. Not all gameplay elements have to have a physical effect on your gameplay, because a psychological effect could be much more powerful in the long run.
"Small minds talk about people, average minds talk about events, great minds talk about ideas."
I really dont understand this a jedi can choose every dark side choice and not become sith and sith can choose light side and not turn jedi seriousiy wtf
I'm with you on that. I'm not followed TOR at all religiously, but what I'm hearing does seem to suggest that you can be a dark side jedi. Isn't jedi, by its very nature, light side?
Well, one thing to understand is that the "dark side" choices you get as a Jedi are far less...evil...than the "dark side" choices you get as, say, a Bounty Hunter or Sith Warrior. A dark side choice for a Jedi might involve withholding some info or accepting a bribe. The dark side choices for a Bounty Hunter or Sith Warrior might be murdering an innocent in front of their family. So, I think there are degrees there.
It does have an effect on gameplay. Social gear, different branches in the quest chain, companion affection based on action, which further affects your character customization, appearance change. Not sure what else you would expect. It's certainly impossible to allow for a complete faction switch given the way the game is designed.
Also, like I pointed out above, the choices that classes receive are balanced to the type of class they are. A Jedi's "dark side" choices won't involve murdering innocent people. It will involve taking a bribe, being dishonest, and killing an evil person instead of say, capturing them. By contrast, a Sith Warrior's light side decision won't involve rescuing a kitten from a tree or anything like that. It's all relavtive based on the class.
Honestly, this is a true mmorpg in that BioWare is allowing us to create an actual persona for our characters based on our alignment, which no other MMO has ever done to this extent, and yet people still find a way to bitch about it. Incredible.
But for people like you who cannot for the life of themselves grasp this simple feature, housing I take it doesn't make sense to you either.
You misunderstand. The problem is not with the feature. A morality system for in-game choices is a fantastic feature. Amazing feature. A feature i would love to have in every MMO from now on.
The problem is that it's extremely poorly implemented in SWTOR.
