i think a game that is forgotten quite often is Aion. It has made some impressive strides in the last 6 months or so. Enough that I have resubbed to the game. With additions like free for all and 1v1 pvp arenas It's definitely worth looking into. And also player housing is coming in 3.0 ( a patch thats no longer a pipedream. its on the Korean test server at this very moment ). So I'll place my cards there. Aion looked great when it was released it had a graphic revamp half way through its life and it looks even better now.

Perhaps it's me but i am not impressed with the screens or the vid.
Perhaps it's because i like the more european style.
AoC and VG are probably closest to each other in terms of visuals. While I think it's safe to say FFXIV smokes both of them, the repetitive environments and copy-pasted terrain really hurt it.
In terms of environment, AoC and VG are about equal in my book, though I can't stand AoC's foliage and trees. Where AoC pulls ahead is the character models. Of course, by that same token, I've always felt that the character models were a bit "plastic-y," and it doesn't help that there's pretty much only one style of armor until endgame. Vanguard's characters are less detailed, but they fit in well with the game. The game's skybox is pretty much unrivaled as well.
I just think you have to get VG the nod because, aside from a couple seconds of hitching upon entering a new area, the game is entirely open-world and seamless. Age of Conan feels far too boxed in whereas VG has an almost Oblivion-like feeling of "if you can see it, you can explore it." So what I'm trying to say is perhaps AoC is "technically" superior to Vanguard; however, due to the fact that Vanguard is open world it simply feels like a more visually impressive game.

The FFXIV world is really bad and really hurts the game imo not to mention the levelling system even though i think it's been reworked or is in the process of being reworked.
I think its really a tie between FFXIV and Aion. FFXIV has stunning character detail that belongs in a single player game, but the world is so drab it makes EQ sparkle! Aion (with the updated cryengine) is something special graphically and asuming you don't mind some eastern art its the best atm.
AoC comes a close third, pretty impressive for what is now an aging game.
I am shocked and appalled that people are suggesting Rift, I have played it (FFXIV and Aion as well ofc) and it is no where in the same league. It is completely medicore, nothing special at all.

I will acknowledge that TERA has better graphics then Aion. I am pretty sure it picked up some awards for it only a few weeks ago and G-Star! However it is not out in the west yet and we cannot play it. I thought the whole point of this thread was which mmo that is currently out has the best graphics.
If I mistook that then Blade and Soul > TERA > Aion.
Rift has by far the best graphics from a technical perpsptective, no midrange system can hit 60 FPS while maxing out the settings for it. It actually even has better graphics than some big name single player RPGs today, like Dragon Age 2 and Skyrim.

Skyrim has bad coding, Rift does not. MMOs are more CPU and Hard Drive intensive than most other genres ( some RTS can be pushed further ). Most people are still not going into OCing or buying good SSDs, so Rift easily pushes their systems to the limit. Rift graphics options are very extensive, with some lighting and texture options that you can only find in high end games like Battlefield 3 and Witcher 2. The only reason the game may seem inferior to something is because a lot of the zones are just really bland, the artists in AoC designed a much better looking world. Weapons and armor in rift also don't help with how generic they are.
Many of the ones mentioned I haven't tried but for Avatar graphics I'd go FF14. The landscape there is pretty sterile, plants etc dont have detail but the avatar graphics more than make up for it. It allows for the stylized cut scenes the game made use of too. Strictly from an Avatar perspective, I'd call FF14 Pixar quality graphics.
Aion as mentioned has alot of individuality in thier Avatar graphics. FF14 still has them beat in terms of smoothness and animation look.. I see alot of lines and slot markings on my Aion characters but the graphics are good just the same.
Crank up EVE graphics and the ships look bad ass, high detail. All the trailers for EVE are done with ingame graphics.
LotRO has some of the best scenery graphics for the age of the game they rival new ones. Very vivid and detailed.
AoC? TBH the only thing I remember of the 2 months I played was the topless female chars and the boobs still hade edges that left the "square boob" look. Yes, I'm a pig. Life goes on but no point in bull shitting you. Its what I noticed. Scenery was clean there from what I remember of it.

I agree with you on this. Skyrim strengths are elsewhere,yeah the graphics are nice and look nice but they really are not much better than oblivion.
Ill take The Witcher 2 graphics over Skyrim all day long but both are really great games though.
