Any reasonably decent 4-5yo PC should have no trouble whatsoever running SWTOR on max settings. After all it has graphics from 2004 lol.
My ~4yo pc still handles most new games and it's only C2D 1.8Ghz @ 2.7Ghz, Radeon 5750 1GB and 2GB RAM
That's Asassin's Creed: Revelations on max, Skyrim on ultra and I'm pretty sure Arkham City will be a breeze. Heck it even runs Battlefield 3 on high with decent framerate however it's pushing it a bit. Compared to these SWTOR is a chicken-weight. If you get lag it's not because your machine is slow, but because the servers can't handle the load, and that is not your problem.
If you are thinking of upgrading it is even more important to shop around as components are at a very high price because of supply and demand issues as many production places have been affected by the floods and other natural disasters that have happended in recent times. Its not the best time to go upgrading unfortunately.
Greatness is difficult to appreciate from close up. The great mountain on the horizon is only the ground when you are standing on it.
I dont think you will see any difference upgrading your video card in this game. I use the radeon 5870 which is still an excellent top end card. I havent played SWTOR but i play skyrim on ultra with all the options cranked up and i get bautiful performance and the graphics on SWTOR dont look like theyre as sophisticated as Skyrim.

But Finally I bought myself a 256GB SSD which I reccomend you get instead of the crap you don't need, it will make a much more significant difference on its own than buy what you suggested.
One to two second faster loading times isn't really worth the money.
ah, yeah....you didn't mention how much memory you have. That would be my first suspicion if you are having performance issues with that rig.
Also....in SWTOR's video options, try this:
Disable "Windowed Mode" and "Fullscreen Exclusive Mode", turn V-Synch on, exit game, and reboot.
This is something that we full time testers have been doing for several builds, and seems to make a MASSIVE difference in performance.
8 gb. I didn't mention it because it wasn't an issue. I have been having real issues; however, even after taking similar steps to what you recommend. Sometimes, I can get up to 60-70 FPS in certain areas, but a lot of the time, I'm sitting at around 25-40 to 55, and my framerate absolutely tanks when around other players.
And my question still has not been answered. I get great framerates with my rig in Skyrim as well as do I with a ton of single player games, but MMORPGs are different beasts than single player games. Not counting when I'm in towns, I probably get a higher average FPS in Skyrim than in most areas in WoW since the Cata update.
My question remains, seeing as SW:TOR is CPU intensive as are most MMORPGs, would the CPU upgrade be more beneficial than the GPU upgrade?
It's a good time to upgrade the ol CPU. Your 5870 is still a great card, the 570 isn't that much better. The new sandy bridge CPU will help you the most with SWTOR. Then upgrade to the next nvidia 600 series next year sometime.
Upgrading for SWTOR Is kinda like upgrading to play... WoW or Oblivion, ya know? Actually Oblivion looks better than SWTOR, but that's not really why we are all gonna play SWTOR right?

I decided really that I would most likely either replace just the video card with the 580 1gb or I would replace the MB and processor to the 2500k. I don't know if that will change your recommendation, but thanks.
I actually have two 5870s in Crossfire, but I've found that crossfire nets me next to no performance increase in MMORPGs, and to be honest, it's a crapshoot with most singleplayer games. It depends on the drivers, and it can be weeks/months before issues are totally sorted out. I'd much rather have a single GPU that nets me around the same performance I would get with 2 5870s.
A lot of people are actually telling me upgrade that GPU, but that really flies in the face of what I know about MMORPGs. I'm just trying to gather more information about the issue before I drop a lot of money on something.

Actually you have a really nice CPU too. You really should have 0 problems running any games, especially SWTOR with your setup. If there is an issue it's probably the game not your hardware. Try OCing that CPU if you feel you aren't getting the performance you want.
The 580GTX is a great card, it's what I use. However, when crossfire works, your two 5870s will be more powerful than a single 580gtx, and it's 500 bucks for a 580gtx.
I used to run crossfire cards too and there is alot of work on the user end to make it all run smooth. You have to be vigilant about drivers and I used Radeonpro to tweak everything. You probably do all this already, but just in case you don't, check out Radeonpro. It's a great little program. Also check out the forums on Guru3d.com for all the new beta drivers and CAPS if you don't already.
First off, your computer doesn't need to upgraded and I use that term loosly since the AMD 1090T out performs the I5 series lol. I'm wondering if you are being serious or trolling ?
My machine is a way less then what you got, and I ran the game maxed out.
THe components you picked out are a complete downgrade from what you have.
No, the AMD 1090T does not out perform the 2500k. Non OC'd they are close in numbers, but the 2500k still will out perform it in every game out there. OC'd the 2500k will blow the doors off the 1090T.
OP. No need to upgrade for SWTOR. IF you just have to upgrade, do the 2500k with the 560TI as others here have suggested.

These threads always remind me of the people that upgraded their PC to play AoC hehe.
An honest review of SW:TOR 6/10 (Danny Wojcicki)
