You asked about immersion, WoW certainly wins their. What Rift has done wrong is the little things that give the world life.
If you enjoy alts, Rift is probably not your game.
However if you are an endgame player, then Rift is probably better because you have more options. WoW is just a non stop dungeon grind or daily grind or raid grind. Rift has more options to spice this up.
WoW has more content, but 99% of that content is irrelevant now. There are only 5 dungeons that matter (ZA, ZG and the 3 new ones), only one raid that matters (Firelands is now a waste of time due to their gear scaling system) and if you have a stock of money theres zero reason to do dailies.
At least Rift those dailies and dungeons and chronicles and rifts and invasions and world events all give AA experience. Even if their AA system is mediocre, its still better than WoW's gear only progression. But its tough to get by Rift's lack of soul for some. For others, it doesnt matter.
I have to say WoW, only because there are more people.
My experience in Rift was that I had long waits for groups(days or weeks), and long waits for warfronts.
Of course, its been about 3 years, since I last played WoW. But I'm willing to bet it still offers instant BGs. I don't know how the dungeon finder is. That was after my time.
I would say Rift, I've been playing for a few months and I'm having more fun than I ever had in WoW and I played that for 4 years.
First off the graphics don't even compare to WoW's. If you have a good pc, more importantly a good graphics card the game looks amazing. Especially after the recent updates to the water reflections. The world feels alive
And about the content, I hear many people saying Rift doesn't have enough content. Maybe that was true when the game launched but so many things have changed since then. Right now there are 11 dungeons, 3 20-man raids and 3 slivers (10-man raids) and all of them are very fun, and have nice tactics.
PvP is fun too, especially if you choose to lvl up through it sometimes. There are 5 Warfronts at this time. (like bgs in WoW) .At lvl 50 it's a little hard at first because the high ranked players are alot stronger than you but it's not that hard to move up the ranks so if you pvp alot after awhile you'll get good gear and have alot more fun
But the best way to find out if you like it is to play the free trial :P
Rift looks prettier, but you're simply going to have much more things to do in WoW. The game has been out much longer and since Rift is basically copied off of WoW with the exception of the rifts which is copied off of Warhammer's PQs, you probably would be better off going with the original since Rift doesn't improve on anything WoW did as far as gaming mechanics.
Outside of the souls which give you more flexibility in how to make a toon, WoW does near everything else better from crafting to fishing to battle pet collecting to adventure/exploration to PvP. But the soul flexibility is a lie because the endgame ends up in two or so builds for each class if you want to actually be effective doing anything. So even though they say something like "you can make hundreds of combos", the game boils down to "Oh you're not X specced for tanking? Sorry." PvP is a FOTM club and most PvPers are tired of it and starting to revolt through all the nerfs/buffs since launch.
Rift is a VERY population needy game unlike WoW, meaning if you end of on a bad server you will not be taking part in the game's star attraction, rifts. If there aren't enough people on the server you choose you will end up missing out on tons of things. Players will say you can change servers anytime you like, but then again so can all the people you are trying to meet and play with. You move here, they move there. This happens unlimited and as much as you like. It also makes for horrid open-world PvP as sides are low and if one starts losing, they simply move off leaving the other side to wonder if people quit.
WoW has a new expansion coming out soon while Rift has nothing of the sort even talked about. When I say talked about, I mean Trion has not said "We will have X new zones or X new races or X new level caps or anything". All they say is "Someday." Many people don't want to wait that long.
Rift is a game that stills need to simmer imo. It had a good start but if you play now, you will hit max VERY fast and then you will end up doing nothing but raiding.
as much as it kills my soul i think you would be better off with WoW. if your a new player theirs tons and tons of end game content. Its a no challenge no skill reguired game. It almost plays it self all you need to do is hit forward and you mouse botton.
I dont like advertising it but if it wasnt a decent game it wouldnt have its current sub numbers.
Rift is a game that stills need to simmer imo. It had a good start but if you play now, you will hit max VERY fast and then you will end up doing nothing but raiding.
WoW right now is in the worst state of its 7 year career for MEANINGFUL endgame content. There is a ton of older content, but there is only one current 7 boss raid, and you can get gear equivalent to the last raid (or better) simply by running dungeons.
Now theres a ton of obsolete content that can be fun if you get likeminded people, but the current endgame of WoW is a disaster and Im not sure MoP plans to fix it.
Rift is the clear and easy winner for 'meaningful stuff to do at endgame' and it really isnt close.
WoW is by far the better game before max level though, at least until 60.

WoW is by far the better game before max level though, at least until 60. While the age of WoW is true, that also is one of the benefits. Older games have a ton of content for people to do. The only thing is finding others to do that content with and in that regard, WoW beats Rift hands down. Rift is a new game and on it's forums all you read are people who just started that have no one do do rifts with, can't find parties to stop invasions and queue for dungeons and sit for hours. That's a bad sign.
Also, the OP never actually said he/she played WoW so I assumed he didn't. They only said they played Rift before so I don't want to assume he's done all the older WoW content as there STILL are people who didn't play WoW, or claim that.
Given all that and the idea that someone who never played WoW (or only lightly played it) can step right into the game and have a ton of real content to do (not artifact hunting, lol) solo or with other people because WoW still has packed servers is appealing.
Plus as I said, WoW has a new expansion with all the details (even if some don't like it) whereas Rift isn't even talking about it beyond "We are actively looking into a future expansion". Warhammer was another game that came out and never discussed expansion only in the same vague terms as Rift and after two years they STILL don't (nor ever will) had an actual expansion with races, zones, and the like but kept stringing people along thinking it was a no-brainer they would.
To me, Ember Isle is the equivalent of Warhammer's Land of the Dead content. Not a real expansion by any means but fans treated it like it was because they didn't seem to know any better. I'm sure those that did saw LOTD and figured "Of course an expansion will come" which it never did.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR
I just played Rift for about a month and I felt the PvE was more immersive (and less goofy) than WoW but PvP was surely lacking. Some warfronts, which seemed not as good as WoWs battlegrounds and certainly not as good as WARs scenarios and basically non existant world PvP.
So if you like PvP I would go with WoW. Myself I am playing AoC right now which atleast has some good old fashioned ganking on the new PvP server.
- constant excuses for why something is not possible...open world dynamic events...20 and 10 man being separate and not sharing the same lock out...smaller content made for single/duo casuals

Rift:
-Content every 6-8 weeks..WoW fans will tell you quality over quantity, then go ahead and explain why they just had 2 hot fixes to fix gamebreaking issues
- no cash shops as of yet
- server transfers are free and Trion outright calls companies that charge for it in 2011 a rip off
- no excuses..we wanted Alternate advance and got it, we wanted smaller content and got chronicles...5 man teams wanted ways to get better gear and we got master modes...pvp'rs wanted altertive so they got alternate war fronts and pvp rifts
- no arena
I play Rift, so yes my opinion is biased on Rift, but I also played WoW for 2 years. In my view Blizzard does not use your sub money on WoW and it is widely known that alot of their top devs are on expansions and other projects not even associated with WoW.
It is not longer that honestly. Blizzard lives by raid or die. Trion has gone the EQ route where 20man raiding is still there and they do make it, but it is not the primary means of end game anymore. People who say it is are flat out lying.
If you are cool with finishing content in less then a month and being forced to do it for the next 6 go for WoW. It is no longer a case of being equal - WoW's engine is old or blizzard does not care anymore.
One way or another you are not getting your money's worth anymore playing WoW and 1.7 MILLION people agree with me when they quit. I'll predict it again WoW will take a much much heavier hit from SWTOR then Rift will.

This is so false, it's not even funny.
All people do in Rift is LFG queue and queue for the raids. Rifts are done sparingly and at lower levels not at all.
Most of the PvP people are about to bolt because of the Nerfhammer that's been swinging wildly over there. People are still reporting heavy waits for dungeons because the populations are dropping as evidenced by the shrinking servers still (closed some more down this past week), and higher level guilds are reporting problems keeping enough people because everyone is burning out on raiding.
Meanwhile, I'm looking at WoW commercials on Fox Television right now while watching NFL football, so you know there will always be people in WoW to play with. Loving Rift is one thing, but not realizing the reality is something completely different.
PopinJay, I'm sorry but you don't know what you are talking about. People are doing a lot in Rift besides LFG. Perhaps you tried a low pop server or didn't join a guild or whatever else may have happened, but your information is off base.
There will be a lot of people playing WoW AND Rift for the foreseable future. Both games have their charms and simularities. Frankly, the main reason to choose Rift over WoW is that Rift has yet to charge for it's major content where with WoW you have to spend a LOT of money on expansions to play the current version of the game.

This is what most people are doing in Rift on a daily basis:
1. Log in do dailies
2. Log in raid (if it's time)
3. Grind PA in EI
4. PvP in arenas (if they like PvP)
That's pretty much the daily routine most people do. Now you can say that's "a lot" but doing it, you won't think so. Now this is the stuff fans say people do as if it's really popular:
1. Artifacts
2. Title hunting
3. Exploration (in a small world)
4. Helping others
Most servers open world PvP is non-existent. Instant Adventures aren't even in the game and most people are burned out on those Chronicles already.
You probably should talk to a few more people because you'll find this to be the case, especially on the official forums when you read them. Why else are the servers still dropping off in population and servers shutdown?
The OP is obviously a wow fanboy, why even waste your time suggesting rift to him. I would rate swtor and everquest 2 higher than wow and rift but thats just my opinion.

RIFT !
thanks alot from all the input guys
1st of all no "wow haters" talking crap thats great
from what i can gather from all the input both games are definately worth playing
to be honest id like wow better if it had a graphics update and included that rift grouping similar to war
Rift has both these things but for some reason it just doesnt pull me in like wow does
im gonna stick with wow until.... ummm
until another game sgets me off it for a week or 2 :P
i would say in my opinion that the "wow killer" for wow players is definately not here yet
well its not for me yet anyway so ill just wait and probably bring up the next title when it comes out
GW2 Vs WOW .. hmm need a new computer for that comparison i think :P
threat everywhere
I'd say go with that your friends have. Don't have any friends? Play WoW, it's more populated and makes it easier to make friends.
Seriously, an MMO is not fun without other people to play it with.
