IGN: I was also curious about space combat and how that might evolve. How are the later game missions different from the early game ones and will they ever become sort of a multiplayer experience?
James Ohlen: We're going to continue to add missions. That's another thing that actually surprised us. While we knew that because we weren't doing a freeform X-wing versus Tie Fighter-style space game that we were going to get backlash, that didn't surprise us and obviously we got that feedback a long time ago. We've been working really hard to continue to improve the space game that we have and it's definitely become more popular with our fans with each [beta] iteration. The very last test we had it scored higher than it's ever scored before. I don't think it's going to win over people who want X-wing versus Tie Fighter but I do think people are going to find that it's very evocative of Star Wars and it's a fun activity when you want to take a break from questing. You can go to your own starship and involve yourself in some very awesome Rogue Squadron-y space combat. I can say that we do have a special project going on right now in regards to the space game that will expand the space game in a significant way, but that's not something that's coming right away.

To assume space combat will be like previous Star Wars space combat... is logical. I assume they will had a PvP space scenario or open world space pvp area.

They would need to make space multiplayer first; currently it is solo play only.
My Colour Is Vomit green, I puke on the tards with stupid colour sigs. My symbol is ,,!, O ,!,, My enemies are any prat with a colour sig, a meaningless personality test, or a pointless list of games and classes.

I took this post as a troll due to the title and content. The title is declarative, "Here is the new space combat!" You then proceed to post a quote, followed by video of a game they specifically stated they weren't emulating as the 'new space combat.'
As far as my own opinion - the quote suggests something big is coming to space combat. However, I wouldn't expect it to be freeform - all of their discussions about space combat point away from freeform, open environment combat. It's an entirely different gameplay model than what exists; if that's what they wanted it would either be in already, or there would be no space combat. At the very least, they wouldn't still be putting work into the rails space combat to try and improve it (if they had already given up on it internally in favor of a freeform space combat system).
That's just obvious though, of course they're working on some sort of multiplayer space area... I mean Star Trek did it... I expect it to enter in the first 2 content patches so between 2-5 months

So, they knew they were going to get backlash, and yet they did it anyway.
/facepalm
Who are these people?
Game Developers... like any smart game development you don't go out of your way to build extra content... you focus on polishing the content in the game design document and meeting the launch date as additional content rehypes their product on release so now they most likely have a lot of stuff being worked on that will launch and rehype their product.

I really couldnt care less about the space combat. I'm playing for the MMO part. Not the space combat.
I mean really.... who wants a black sky with two ships shooting each other? Nothing sounds more boring. Anything to make the space combat more arcade like is fine with me

i am to gonna sub to the game beacuse of the ground combat and story its just amazing.
the only thing i don't care for is the rail space shooter..and im not saying i don't like space combat ..
in fact i love space combat..but just not on rails..
if they take it off rails that would be great for me and i would play more of the space comabt ...
Expecting a certain portion of your player base to be vocally dissappointed != purposefully making poor design decisions, or a worse game.
You can move in a direction that is ultimately for the good of the game and expect backlash. For example, the MOP talent trees coming to World of Warcraft. The designers feel as though it is ultimately a better system moving forward, but they fully expect a large amount of initial backlash from players who either do not understand the decision - who understand it but disagree - and players who simply have unreasonable expectations (such as "WHY DON'T YOU GIVE US AN INTERESTING, COMPELLING TALENT FOR EVERY LEVEL IN THE GAME RAWAWARRR!!!!").
Anticipating and considering customer complaints is part of the job of any developer, yet pleasing everyone is obviously impossible. You consider all the available options and go with the best fit for your team and your project at the time.
Your first sentence is misleading yet your final 2 I agree with.

In the thanksgiving weekend beta I didnt get to space combat. However watching a few video's of it I think it looks kinda fun in a minigame sort of way. Whats funny is people wanted more, they said they are going to add more, and you people who complained they want more are still complaining because its not in NOW. Has it really gotten to a point where MMO gamers act like 5yr olds who demand what they want when they want it instead of acting like an adult and being happy that eventually multiplayer will be in? Maybe its because the younger MMO generation grew up in a society where getting there ass beat for acting up is called "child abuse". When I grew up if I acted like some of you are I would get a belt across my ass. Some people say that solution never worked but the proof is in the way children and young adults act now compared to "back in the day".
So here is what I propose. From now on anytime someone wants to access the internet for ANYTHING but reading they have to plug in a collar to the device they are going to use the internet on. Whenever someone acts like a 5yr old whiney brat the collar shocks them. Repeatedly if need be. Maybe then people will learn the diffrence between complaining because they dont like something and acting like a little kid. You complain you didnt like space combat? Fine no shock. You complain that space combat isnt what you want and even though they are working on multiplayer space combat and you want it NOW you get 50,000 volts telling you to grow the fk up.
Space combat is a big part of the Star Wars IP and everyone tracking the upcoming SWTOR mmorpg should know by now that this is a very ambitious game, maybe not revolutionary, but a big big game. I am sure that integrating space combat to a game like this must be a headache, but it had to be done.
The question is, does BioWare decided to add the feature just to honor the ip name, or they did it to enhance the game itself?
May look like a simple question but it isnt. It may be the difference between a broken part of the game or something players end up by playing it because its fun and has impact in the game world. Surely it crossed BioWare devs mind to not integrate space combat in the initial release and leave it for a grand expansion, where it could be refined and improved, but one must think and take in consideration that due to the large effort being put in this game to have some degree of space combat in it, if it will be any good?
I don't see the problem. They said thay have something big in the works for the space portion of the game. It will not be in at launch but sometime in the future. For some of you, stop being a spoiled baby and understnad that you can't have everything, at the time you want it. I would much rather them flush out systems that they feel needs work like the color matching system, than have a system that breaks something else that we as players don't see.
The space game as of right now is a fun little time mini game that works, and for what it is, works well. i surely can see them adding all sorts of things that will turn space combat from a mini game to a much bigger system that will do actual SW space combat justice.
i small a troll...
Very off-topic (as is your post) but I just have to give you a +1 for it. Nice read and I totally agree.
On-Topic: I just hope the fans of freeroam space combat don't get their hopes up for nothing. They might be talking about expanding on what they have build for launch; a spaceshooter on rails. It's possible they will just add to that and not change the basics of it.
last couple of comments are retarted if u ask me, im 28, no clue what there talking about.
Even better you could go as far to say back even futher there was this thing called shackles, and they did it to slaves for no good reason, but jesus look how it helped them so much lol.
Anyway, enough idiocity, this thread made me remember playing n64 shadows of the empire which was one hell of a game, I even watched some videos of it on youtube I hadnt seen in years.
Imo, it just shows they did not care about feedback about Space.
It will problally end up just as boring and linear as the rest of this wow clone game most likely. During the beta weekend I actually fell asleep playing the game after just waking up from a normal 8 hours sleep due to how boring and unexciting/innovative the game was, When you can win most fights by just stupidly pushing buttons the game has issues. I've played alot of boring games but it has to be reallly boring for it to put me to sleep like swtor did, the problem with it was that the game copys and pastes way to much from world of warcraft, the linear quest progession, the classes, the combat system and various other things.
Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:
A. Proven right (if something bad happens)
or
B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)
Either way, you can't lose! Try it out sometime!
They are making a star wars game they want to make from there ideas not from yours.. why do you feel your so fking special?
will be nice not having you there good day sir.
I dont think it was done for the 'better of the game', but rather it was simply a design decision that they made.
Had BW decided to go with a more 'Xwing v Tie' style, they likely would not have experienced as much backlash, and it would not necessarily be moving away from 'the good of the game'.
BW is not making all the perfect decisions, and has made some less than optimal choices. There are not idiots, but they certainly are not masters at making an MMORPG, nor are they above making mistakes (major and minor).
ohhhhhhhhh burnnn, haha, im j/k...
It didnt make me tired at all, I did wake up and minutes later I was on SWTOR but it got me rolling and felt good.
They would need to make space multiplayer first; currently it is solo play only.
I already know this one.
They're going to make team objectives on the same rails.
Then squad mechanics.
Kind of obvious.
I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.
