Uh oh...my hope for xwing/tie fighter combat down the road appears to be done for. Oh well, at least they have big plans for improvements in the space game.
I wont hold my breath for these 'big plans'.
It doesn't seem like they really care about the negative feedback, nor that people dislike the system -- but rather are going to only focus on those that like the system.
Imo, those of us that dislike the current system, will dislike the 'big improvements' as well.
So, they knew they were going to get backlash, and yet they did it anyway.
/facepalm
Who are these people?
Imo, it just shows they did not care about feedback about Space.
IMO, it just shows that people that complain about this don't know much about what it takes to make a good game. Star Wars is not the same as Star Trek. The majority of the IP is based on ground based action. It was imperative that they got that part of the game right. Trying to make a space game just as solid would have pushed the development cycle back even further.
Everyone likes to fellate SoE for what a wonderful game they made with SWG, but nobody seems to remember that it launched with NO space combat whatsoever.
Bioware did exactly the right thing here. They focused their efforts on what they should have. Improvements to the space combat can be made after launch, instead of pushing back the development cycle another year or two.

Use some logic, folks.
Here's what I said in another space related thread yesterday.
What's grinding people's gears, is that TOR's space experience feels slapped on; an afterthought.
Waiting to release space as an expansion like SWG did would have been fine with most of us.
At least then we'd know BW was focusing all of their attention on that particular feature and would (hopefully) deliver something a lot more fun and compelling than what we see now.
It boggles the mind that BW thinks what they created is fun, and that people would enjoy it.
I would have preferred them to be honest and just say "Look, we want to create a fully fleshed out space experience, but right now, we just don't have the time or resources to deliver that, so we're going to wait post-launch."

Imo, they never wanted to do such thing.
They just wanted to go with the Rail Shooter, regardless of feedback. It is likely they see it as a mini-game, and do not consider it an important element of the game -- thus not being concerned with the criticism of it. My guess is that they feel those that like it will play the space, and those that dont, will simply play the ground game more.

I agree, why do people think that Bioware, a game maker that has literally NEVER made anything resembling a space shooter game, wishes it had infact included such a feature in their latest RPG. Think about the type of games they make, then look at SW:TOR. Realise that its exactly like every other game they make it plays to their strengths and it shows. Its a very Solid Bioware game.

Yeah, that's becoming more and more obvious by the day.
I'm just frustrated I guess.
I never wanted an exact replica of what SWG did, just something a little more open and less on rails.
I guess we'll see what they come up with in their improvements.

8-Bit, I understand your feeling that space was "slapped on" and that you would have preferred that they waited to release it as an expansion. That's a perfectly logical thing to think, even if I don't personally agree with it. Remember, "fun" is subjective. There are people that are okay with it as a mini-game, particularly because it offers a shitload of xp, so it's actually a pretty cool mini-game as far as the mini-games in other MMOs are concerned. I'll be the first to admit that I want it expanded, and I want it to be free form and exploratory at some point. That would be a great thing for the game. But considering the time constraints they had, what their primary focus was, and what the rest of the game is like, I'm fine with the mini-game for now, particularly since it does offer an very real alternative to quest grinding. We all hope that it gets fleshed out a bit more in future updates.
@Loekii, you certainly do make a lot of assumptions about Bioware and this game. And it's pretty apparent you don't have a high regard for the way they've done things. So my question is, why not just move on to a game that suits you better? From your posts, it sounds like you haven't even beta'd the game, so just making assumptions based on your own pre-conceived beliefs doesn't make a lot of sense to me, and seems like a waste of your energy. No one is going to sway your opinion of it, so why waste time with it? Do you think you are going to sway other people's opinions to your side?
I really couldnt care less about the space combat. I'm playing for the MMO part. Not the space combat.
I mean really.... who wants a black sky with two ships shooting each other? Nothing sounds more boring. Anything to make the space combat more arcade like is fine with me
/Meow

But apparently it cant be Star Wars without "freeform" space combat..
Perhaps they should have just made a space combat sim an THEN added avatars like EvE?
I wonder would that have been a more popular route to take?

Add to this other BW examples of making a game 'their way' -- ie DAO human only player character choice, or TOR Dev's comment about how no one wants to play races other than humans (regardless of the success of non-human avatars in many other games, including WoW).
To me, BW seems to be very unyeilding (to a potential fault) about certain aspects of their design decisions -- space being a prime example.

IDK it seems illogical but as a amateur programmer space is a lot easier to create and so that is why I will never understand why this did this RAIL Crap in SWTOR.
In my opinion it shows that they didn't have the time/resources to make a robust and satisfying space game but wanted to include something that was space related.
While I can understand that opinion, I disagree with it, for similar reasons I disagree with the claims that BW did not have the resources to make a better CC or offer other races -- when we see DragonAgeNexus filled with player created CC graphics that dwarfs what TOR is offering.
Look at what a little company called Cryptic was able to do with Space Combat/content. They developed the Space, Ground, a better CC than TOR, and PvP BGs, all under 2 years, for a minimal budget.
So I do not think that BW could not have done something similar, given their longer development time and much larger budget. I do not think that the Space Combat system in TOR cost that much less than the Space Combat System in STO.
So, imo, it was not about resources, but rather simply a design Decision, much like the art style and CC design.

I sit on a man's back, choking him and making him carry me, and yet assure myself and others that I am very sorry for him and wish to ease his lot by all possible means - except by getting off his back.
I never wanted an exact replica of what SWG did, just something a little more open and less on rails.
I also think they could have done the simple rail system much better - going with a more ANH trench style, where you fly up on things, instead of having enemies fly from behind you and line up in your sights.
Imo, Rogue Squadron 2 (circa 2001?) looks much better than TOR's space Combat, and is an example of a decent rail system:
That would be an interesting Rail Shooter system. That is what they should have aspired to, and I would hope this is more the direction they improve with, than continuing with the way the current system looks.

I think it's rather nit-picky to complain about the space system currently being used; this is a glorified KOTOR3 we're talking about, and it 's sure as hell much more in-depth than what space simulation we experienced in the first games.
IMO, like many other people, the majority of the action is land-based and the fact that space combat might seem like an add-on is justified. They've already adressed concerns about leaving it out to dry, so I'd place a little faith in their inclination to try and broaden the experience over content patches.
Besides, not playing just because the space combat isn't to your liking would, to me, indicate a desire to play a totally different style of game .. EVE? Or, hell, go play the original X-Wing v. Tie Fighters!

I have far greater reasons for not wanting to play at the moment.

This is like asking "why didn't they go with Perma death?"
Its not in their design choices. They didn't want to make a game where you could just level to 16, get in a space ship and then spend the rest of the game in a ship. The type of game they make is a story RPG with characters and dialogue choices and such. The game they made is exactly like what they make.
It would make no logical sense to do what you wanted them to do. Flying around in a space ship does not make for good story telling, going places WITH that ship on part of a long branching story arc (which is what occurs in the movies and books) DOES make for good story telling and is entirely within the realm of Star Wars.
You guys don't want a star wars game, you want a space shooter like Wing commander.
In my opinion it shows that they didn't have the time/resources to make a robust and satisfying space game but wanted to include something that was space related.

Are we talking about space combat or art design? Because I am talking about space combat. "yes" the art design is a decision. The choice on how they chose to create the space combat was also a decision but one born of the fact that there is only so much they can do. Since there really isn't a space game that has incredible space combat and incredible ground combat I highly suspect there are limited resources to make everything at once.
As far as your assertion that mods on dragon age nexus dwarf anything that SWToR is doing, doesn't that contradict the idea that it was a choice? If they choose to create an art design that is highly stylystic then it doesnt' matter what others can do in the realm of the more realistic, they chose this particular design. Whether one likes it better or not is another thing entirely. Realistic art design is one way to go but it doesn't ahve to be the way to go.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
well though i know it will never be a sandbox in space...that is clear...but a rogue squadron style would be great.
" You can go to your own starship and involve yourself in some very awesome Rogue Squadron-y space combat. I can say that we do have a special project going on right now in regards to the space game that will expand the space game in a significant way, but that's not something that's coming right away. "
and i thought maybe they will make it a rogue squadron feel..which would be great.
it wasn't in a huge sandbox in space but again it doesn't have to be.
To assume space combat will be like previous Star Wars space combat... is logical. I assume they will had a PvP space scenario or open world space pvp area.
If they can do it like Star Wars Battlefront, but better!
I think it's rather nit-picky to complain about the space system currently being used; this is a glorified KOTOR3 we're talking about, and it 's sure as hell much more in-depth than what space simulation we experienced in the first games.

Yet the OP is about a BW Dev specifically talking about the space game, and that they are planning on improving it.
Thus discussion about the Space Combat aspect of TOR, and what we would like to see improved, is more than appropriate not only for this thread, but for TOR in general, again as this is something JO is talking about.
You mean you wanted it like Freespace a what 13 year old game that offered free roaming space and not the first of its kind... Space is the most easy system possible to do... Why did TOR not do this? Star Wars the only game that does not have proper space LOL... If this was 1993 and a cheap knock off of some scene from the movies id understand...

I think you misunderstood what I was stating.
The points I present were evidence of how people with fewer resources were no limited to what TOR is presenting, so as such, I am saying it is a choice BW is making, rather than 'this is all they could do because anything more would cost far too much'.
Basically, it was simply a choice BW made from a number of options, rather than the only choice they could make.

It would make no logical sense to do what you wanted them to do. Flying around in a space ship does not make for good story telling, going places WITH that ship on part of a long branching story arc (which is what occurs in the movies and books) DOES make for good story telling and is entirely within the realm of Star Wars.
You guys don't want a star wars game, you want a space shooter like Wing commander.
finished reading,
and just further gives me zero hope for SWTOR in regardles to space in general.
well more SQO for me i suppose. sigh
Realistic art design is one way to go but it doesn't ahve to be the way to go.

well though i know it will never be a sandbox in space...that is clear...but a rogue squadron style would be great.
" You can go to your own starship and involve yourself in some very awesome Rogue Squadron-y space combat. I can say that we do have a special project going on right now in regards to the space game that will expand the space game in a significant way, but that's not something that's coming right away. "
and i thought maybe they will make it a rogue squadron feel..which would be great.
it wasn't in a huge sandbox in space but again it doesn't have to be.
either way can't wait to get in the game..
remember peace.....is a lie.
If they can do it like Star Wars Battlefront, but better!
Star Wars the only game that does not have proper space LOL... If this was 1993 and a cheap knock off of some scene from the movies id understand...
SNIP
I think you misunderstood what I was stating.
The points I present were evidence of how people with fewer resources were no limited to what TOR is presenting, so as such, I am saying it is a choice BW is making, rather than 'this is all they could do because anything more would cost far too much'.
Basically, it was simply a choice BW made from a number of options, rather than the only choice they could make.
