The real reason to not like The Old Republic

Like the post thread titled "why I hate this game" I too found myself addicted. I mean right off you are floored with the way it plays and the class story lines are just brilliant.

I found myself playing for days straight, not sleeping. fun right?

Well I warn you, do not get a good nights sleep or this may happen to you....

You may try space, laugh that anyone seriously made this for a star wars MMO. But hey no big deal right? just go back to questing and loving the game.

"record scratch sound" Noooooooooooooooooooooooo, as Luke yelled so well. You see, I always knew that the Battlezones would be my reason to stay. I say again Noooooooooooooo.

If you are a PvP player I am telling you now, do not buy this game, thus you will not be here or some other forum saying WTF Bioware? It is just a horrible design and the actual fighting is prettty bad as well.

First off you cannot choose your battlezone, so let's say you find the idea of Hutt ball an insult, or even a joke, or hey even not your thing? too bad you are playing it. So not being able to choose just sucks.

Then there is the fact you are forced into PUG's. You can team up with 3 friends but the other 4 players are ravdom. I found the nature of 1 of the other 2 zones to be too helter skelter as well, so even if I could live with just playing the one, I am not allowed.

Then there is the no level brackets. I thought this would take a while to effect anyone right? wrong I just had my face handed to me, because even though I was raised the 13 levels needed, I did not have the 13 levels worth of abilities. Stupid.

All this is the name of "NO TWINKS"

I will not go into how stupid it is to malign people for getting good gear. I will not point out that only non pvp players would whine about other players having good gear. I wil not go into how utterly stupid it is to look down on a player for doing the work to get good gear is. Hey Nor wil I point out that every so called twink I ever played with would rather have standardnized PvP gear.

I will just say this as a solution is an insult to anyone looking forward to PvP in TOR. Do not believe me? try it out, I am sure of one thing, for every person who says they like PvP in TOR 20 others will quietly move unto GW2 or some such.

So with space being for people who do not play space games and PvP for people who do not play PvP games and crafting being a joke of a side mini game...I will sum it up this way.

I am friggin tired of getting excited for MMO releases. I was for this one and I still think questing is great "record scratch sound"

Oh I forgot, I played a Imp agent in beta, so when I got my chance to re build my IA I found out one important thing, TOR gets really boring fast when you replay the same quest. Tature of what makes it so much fun the first time also makes it nerve grating the 2nd.

So I warn you thusly, the people who will stay long term in TOR will be the WoW players. I will not buy my pre order now. no point.

I will quietly wait for GW2, the secret world, or arch age. The way MMO's have been since Dark Age of Camelot and SWG, maybe I should not bother.

I hope for those that have a similar outlook on MMO's, that this saves you money and time. I am outtie, from here and TOR. CYA when GW2 hits "FINGERS CROSSED"

If you are a real pvper then what you are looking forward to is open world FFA, with added goals etc.

    Of course battlezones suck.

I can't blame you for not liking TOR in the long run due to the hamster wheel gear grind, but what will TSW offer in terms of longevity? What will GW2 offer (without requiring a sub, that's a plus)? Noone knows what will hold someone's attention in the long run. Maybe ArcheAge will be what you're looking for, but you should have known TOR wouldn't be you. It's all about the stories, enjoy as many of those as you can. If you're only interested in one class and not in the gear grind at end game, then this game will probably disappoint.

Sorry, I find it hard to follow your logic. You don't like it because in PvP you can't choose your arena?

WoW type PvP was never the golden standard anyways.. it was just that it was popular with the children at the time. If you like hardcore PvP try Darkfall where real PvP goes on.. or something more catered to it.

Arena-type PvP is garbage. Sure it gives you instant action, but takes away from "the hunt" and real skills to be able to find people in the open world and make the death blow. Seriously.. do yourself a favour and play something with better PvP mechanics if that's what you're up for.

but yet SW:TOR copied it almost exactly, other then giving you the choice of picking which one you want to play. i'm sure it will make the SW kiddies happy.

The real real reason to dislike SWTOR?  It killed off SWG.

Cue up SWG haters and people still hurt over the NGE. You aren't totally wrong, but it really was getting way better despite SOE epic mishandling of that game at every juncture. We had some dedicated devs for about the past 2 years that really was putting a ton of content (some good, some not so good) despite having to do so witha  tiny team and no money or love from home base. The two game could have coexisted but LA killed it off. True story.

Played: Asheron's Call(still the best fantasy MMO!), EQ1, EQ2, Vanguard, DAoC, Horizons, City of Heroes/Villians, WoW (crap), LOTORO, D&D Online, Eve, Anarchy Online, and still playing SWG daily.

A little time spent on youtube and again I saw an mmorpg that has never spent 5 seconds in dark age of camelot.  Another shoddy instanced pvp system where nearly every had 1 sword, 2 swords, or a double sabeered lightsword - just pew pewing everywhere.  Looks silly, I was bored just watching it.

I can't wait in the next month when there will be something else to talk about.  A dumned down version of SWG is not going to be the topic any longer.

/I wonder how long before this title is free to play.

I hope your not talking about Ilum? For one it's not Open World anything, more like an Instanced PvP zone. And two there's nothing free for all in Ilum, you die and respawn instantly.

I play wow and i was liking tor till i found about how bad the pvp was in tor...no lvls brakets u can't chose what kind pvp u want  to play..and no premades..yeah i also canceled my preorder aswell cool game for pve but the pvp is really badly done.

So your point about wow players staying i doudbt that casue wow does themepark better thus why i am playing wow till guild wars 2 comes i guess or archage .

Yeah no game will ever top daoc unless they just re do dark age and leave off atlantis and make it have better graphics that game took real skill and to the guy that said the pvp was instanced in daoc your an idiot sir and that is what u get for not playing a game and just watching a video. Dark age killed it self and was hella popular till atlantis ruined it.

  • ZebladeZeblade Member UncommonPosts: 931

This killed it and says all "the people who will stay long term in TOR will be the WoW players."

The is just an example that people dont think when they type. Do you know who WOW players are? You and me. You never played WOW? Your still a WOW player. As if playing EQ/EQ2 "insert MMO here" makes a difference. Everyone I know that plays WOW its because they have TONS of other friends playing. This is why MOST play WOW. Some just don't like it yet they play because of FRIENDS.

Ok now you can come down from your soap box.

You know respawns have nothing to do with something being a FFA right?

    +1

This is a game to take your time with, to enjoy. If you are a power gamer, you will be wasting your money imho. Its like a bottle of good wine, to me. You take a sip, enjoy the taste. My two credits.

    LOL.

SWG (for its time, or course) was LEAPS AND BOUNDS better than this shallow game. It offered variety, community, and freedom most MMOs only dreamed of (best of all, action-pack space flight and REAL crafting). Sure, it got wrecked eventually by SOE... but in its early days, this one doesnt come close to comparing.

The voice overs are good for storytelling, but thats part of the problem. You get mostly TOLD what to do, where to go etc. The storyline is mostly like space flight. You get on a tightly controlled path with minimal ability to 'veer off' to fire. But in the long run, you only get to go exactly where the ride takes you.

Add up arcade-based space component, combat and mechanics and PVP areas copied striaght from the playbook of most other mmos out there and you are left with an animated movie with the depth and choice of a choose-your-own-adventure novel.

There is nothing wrong with expecting a new MMO to be just as good as long established ones.  Because in the end, people vote with their wallets.  And if an already established MMO is much better than a new one, people are not going to care that the established MMO had a "leg up," they will play the more enjoyable game.

And really, this is a more valuable viewpoint/lesson for developers than consumers.  Trying to play "catch up" with an MMO that has been out for years is never going to work.  IMO, new MMO's should offer something foundationally different that established MMO's can't compete with.

The danger of being too similar to an established MMO, is that you will never have enough time/money to "outdo" the established MMO at its own game by release, and players will just go to the MMO that offers the better experience.

Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?

Sounds like old school battlegrounds.  I always liked them better before the devs started playing god with them.
