Who says you have to have talent to make good music?

  • RazorbackRazorback Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 5,253

In this day and age talent is just a handy extra feature to most musicians....

I was of course joking about listening to Destiny's Child *sigh* (the Aussie sense of Humour foils them again) The only moderately redeeming feature about them is their slightly above average looks and lack of sensible clothing... Id prefer to enjoy them visually with the volume turned down.

So in judging my musical tastes on a list of 5 bands I happen to like there has been a conclusion leapt to that is completely wrong...

Most of the time Im listening to classical, when Im playing games like GTA I keep it locked on the Rap and and Rege stations.... My main love is heavy metal sure but I also have just about everything done by Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Cream, Santana, Beastie Boys, Wagner (thats "Vargner" philistines lol), Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Led Zep, Dr Dre, MC Eiht, Arron Copeland (any American who doesnt know who he is hang yuor head in musical shame)... Its fair to say about the only thing I DONT like is PoP lol...

Jumping to conclusions is a bitch huh ?

Heh, Razor, as an American, I've got to say I really enjoyed playing a tribute to Arron Copeland when I was in high school band.

In general, I just go with the in-game music when I  play (I know, lazy).  But after 5-6 hours straight, when the sun is warmly heating up China and it's dead of night here, I'll occasionally bust out some Rage or SoaD.  Basically, if I'm going with external music, it needs to be something to get the blood pumping, or I'm gonna fall asleep.

Please don't compare pop and metal. that is an ignornant statement if i ever saw one...just because you don't like a particular genre of music, doesn't mean it requires little talent. Where are the bands you like? Please enlighten us all of this music that eclipses all other genres.....anyways.

    Killswitch Engage

    He Is Legend

    Hell Within

    I Mother Earth

    It Dies Today

    The Used

    Dredg

    Pink Floyd

    36 Crazyfists

    Mr. Bungle

    Finch

there are a few for you guys that know that the crap you hear on the radio is only what record labels think you should like...

People like the above poster is why radio in general sucks. The masses truly are asses.

I only post when I see someone struggling to make it outside of the box of nonsense mommy and daddy built for them out of tinted windows. I am going to guess and assume you're trying to make a point that either rap and or techno takes more skill than pop or heavy metal. While it is true that the only thing pop stars need talent for is balancing there checkbook of 8 to 9 figures could be dubious (Wishes he tried out for the backstreet boys so he could have that same problem...). Heavy metal on the other hand, including alternative (For all you seattle mmorpg'ers!), and rock are built on music theory (which every song in existence has). Except, they try and break the grounds of musical theory (Download some Dream Theatre or even mudvayne and listen to the bass). Not to mention, they play there own instruments which takes years and years to master. Rap is mostly based around creating and sampling a good mix of music in the background and creating lyrical schemes. I don't see how there would be more talent in that than heavy metal.....Techno on the other hand is creating good samples for background that they buy on computer CD's and upload to there equipment. Again, all music is tough to create, some of it harder than others, all require some form of talent. But, to say heavy metal requires little talent is ignorance.

With that said...*Bakes a humble pie and slides it into the box you've been shelled up in*

I would agree that pop doesn't require that much talent, since half of the success pop stars get is depending on image/looks.

But true Metal takes a lot of talent. Bands like Linkin Park isn't true metal. They play what the public "want them to play" Mainstream band.

True metal bands play what they want to play.

Good music for PvP, PvE.. all fantasy games : MANOWAR

I also like listening to Metallica, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Blind Guardian and a few others.

Let's not bash the pop stars here either folks.  That requires talent as well.  I couldn't carry a tune if someone put it in a bucket.  But pop stars are able to do that.  In general, voice talent takes as long to develop as playing an instrument.  And if we want to look at the music in general, and not the individual performers, ALL music takes creative talent.  To be able to hear a song that's never been played, to be able to take that song in your head and transcribe it to instruments, to then feel the emotions that the melody, harmony, and rhythm inspire, and to then be able to add words to the song that follow the emotions felt by the music.  If anyone on this forum had any of these talents in the way that professional musicians do, I don't think we'd be wasting time at work posting image

So let's all just agree to disagree about what kind of music we enjoy in general, and get back to discussing what sort of music we like to have on while slaughtering helpless bunnies and helpless n00bs.

Um, Pop i agree with.  Heavy Metal however requires a huge amount of talent.  You must know nothing about it, nor the countless hours and years you have to spend honing instrument skills.  No talent... LMAO!  Just cause you dont like it dont mean anything.

Well, some metal does not take talant to do. Playing one chord as fast as you can while drumming a two-rythem beat and screaming words from Charles manson's diary is not talent. However, I can name a ton of metal bands who have talant.
