If you're a sandbox gamer you will hate this game if for no other reason than it drives a nail into the coffin of a future sandbox game. Sandbox games are dead.

Originally posted by Fearmeirl I knew it wouldnt be a great game since its based off Star Wars and such but is the gameplay and PvP really as bad as people make it out to be?
Kind of depends on your point of view really.
If you are a SWG player, and your only option for a Star Wars IP is SWToR, it might be that bad. It's not that the development on the game is that bad, it's that it's not the kind of game you want to play, but it's the only Star Wars MMORPG you can play besides Clone Wars.
If you are tired of Theme Park games and think that any new game developed using Theme Park features is a blight on the world and is indicative of the fall of Western Civilization, then you're probably not going to like it.
If, for some strange reason, you hate stories and just want to quest grind or kill grind your way to max level without actually seeing anything resembling a reason why, then you'll probably hate this game.
If you wanted the game to be about PvP between the Empire and the Republic, you might be disappointed. The game isn't about PvP, though it does have PvP, including open zone PvP and a FFA PvP zone.
If what you're looking for is Guild Wars 2, Mortal Online done right, Star Wars Galaxies 2, World of Warcraft 2, Dark Age of Camelot 2, Ultima Online 2 or Everquest 3 you may be disappointed.
If you actually want a story, like reading books or watching a decently written movie, don't mind or like Theme Park mmorpg and you don't fall into the categories above, then SWToR is a well written game, possibly even a great game.
It has an excellent story telling mechanic that pulls you into the game. It has a well designed companion system and a crafting system that is relevant to your character and encourages interaction with other players or at least rolling a couple alts. The combat and graphics are average, nothing new or exciting. The zones appear to have a low visible population, but they are instanced, so there are more people on the server and in the zone you're in than you can see. If all of this sounds OK to you, then the game is actually really good. Great even.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
If you are talking about gameplay wise? Yes, it is the most casual gameplay you can have in an MMO.
If you are a true PvPer (DAoC, DF, AC, EQ2) or any type of PvP skill game you will not like it.
The gameplay is exactly like WOW. The whole game itself is pretty much exactly like WOW. Except SWTOR is missing a lot of standard MMO features for today's MMO gen.
This game is about as easy mode as you can get. Just don't take it seriously because BW sure didn't.
It should be F2P!
The game is indeed like Wow.. How can you test PvP.. you did battlegrounds??? How about open-world... You did not test it at all.. or you are in the under 30% who reached pvp planets so far? so it means you played quite much for someone who doesnt like the game...
Easy mode, did you try maraudian dungeon ... did you raid ( one guild did so far i think ) so how can you know... Leveling is easy... Yes.. how was DAoC DF AC or EQ2 any different..
I'm not trying to be a fanboy...but if you bash a game.. use real arguments
I knew it wouldnt be a great game since its based off Star Wars and such but is the gameplay and PvP really as bad as people make it out to be?
I think very few people would actually say the game is bad, and I think most people would agree it's farily polished in most areas. The greatest problem I think people are having with this game and why this is so much hate is because of what the game isn't. There is such a plethora of mmo's readily available to people that the genre is getting dumbed down and losing it's magic.
Everyone was hoping SWTOR would bring innovation that really inspired a new generation of mmo's and set the standard for quality and engaging game play. What everyone got in the end was a very good game that could have easily come out 6 years ago. It's easy to see why there is so much anger when you take into account that most mmo players have been there done that with a game like SWTOR already.
How long are we going to have to wait to play a game that really brings something fresh to the table? That's what I believe is the catalyst for all the hatred on this game. It's a good game, but it's like everyone's already played it already.

I was skeptical about this game and did not intend on buying it.
I was xmas shopping the other day during early access and put $5 on it at gamestop, got my code and played a few days of early access. I went ahead and bought the game and have enjoyed playing it very much.
If your looking for some ground breaking PvP or PvE experience then look elsewhere. To me it is a great casual game to kill some time with. I think it is worth the money and a sub for several months at least. Maybe longer depending on what updates they bring in the next few months.
I am not one of those people that think an MMO sucks if it doesnt take up years of my life. If i get 3-4 good months of enjoyment out of the game then its a success in my book and worth my money.
$15 a month for entertainment is cheap, even $60 a month is pretty cheap considering. All a matter of perspective I guess.
My advice is if your interested and can afford it try it yourself and form your own opinion. If $60 is too much to try it then wait and see. Asking peoples advice on entertainment / games is like asking favorite flavors of ice cream- everybody likes something different.
OP: I like it, but cannot guarantee any other poster will/will not.
What kind of games do you like? With more information, we can probably make better guesses, though.

ill say its worth month sub, it just isnt worth current asking price.. i doubt you will lvl more than 2 characters, even at that you probbly wont lvl second as zones are mirrors, if you done empire you will notice republic zones after first 2 planets are mirrors,
you will feel " i did this.. just with different npcs " pve is horrible,
pvp is broken due how terrible combat animations are ( not from viewing point, from actuall battle performance, you can have animation go for 1-2s, yet damage you do will be done in first 0.1 of animation cast time , its not fluid at all either, ui is horrible for pvp, can never see if you debuffed anyone or not and so on )
flashpoints are barely fun for first time.. not to mention second
grind..grind grind, dont let story fanboys fool you, yes its good, but none of them will admit you can complete story in 30 mins or less per planet, and another 3-5 hours doing kill 50 rebels/monsters/ whatnot quests
and moment you realize just how copy paste everything is.. i played as empire in beta, and republic for first couple days of release, zones felt new.. untill i reached third planet.. same planet story, same theme, i couldnt feel i did this.. then i went to narshadar (4th planet ) oh my , that was even more copy paste
then tatoine, now at that point quests were exactly same as for empire. i might been killing droids instead of thugs, for one quest.. or mandaliorans instead of droids, but it didnt change the fact it was exactly the same
at that point i realized there is barely even 2 faction replayability.
His point is blunt but it holds in a funny way a fair view ...I'm sure some will come and try to counter this post but it's actually got more truth in it than bashing post and fanboy post, there is actually difference, when people give fair and most of the time honest opinions they are fully explained rather than "It's terrible." or "It's great, haters gonna hate."

It is good if you look at it and play it as sort of Kotor 3. That would be buying it, playing for 30 days, put it on the shelf, wait for an expansion pack.
If you expect a full blown MMORPG, it's fails on too many levels and you may regret your purchase.

I agree also.
But this game was never advertised as something new or different. If you have even slightly followed the game then a person would know this. My question is why buy something that is everything it was advertised and promoted to be and then complain about it?
If you wanted new and innovative then save your money, if you want a polished same old same old model set in Star Wars universe then you got it. Which was what they promoted.

Agree completely with this simple assessment. You can go into a lot of detail, but this really sums it up cleanly. The only other thing I would insert would be that the $15 monthly fee just adds insult to injury. This game should be Buy-To-Play in my opinion. Throw in a cosmetic item mall to make some revenue, sell expansions, but a subscription? No way.
A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.

whatever it was advertised as doesn't matter the fact that the game is the sort that feels like it should of been released many years ago is a problem in many ways
I knew it wouldnt be a great game since its based off Star Wars and such but is the gameplay and PvP really as bad as people make it out to be?
if you are interested in game for PVP and are the type thats tired of rift and wows pvp you probably won't enjoy this games pvp very long.. if yo liked KOTOR and bioware's other games like dragon age and mass effect you will enjoy the game
Agreed, skyrim, me, me 2, ddragon age, etc , if you like those games you will prob like this

i wouldn't say if you like skyrim type games you would for sure like this.. completely differn't type of game in every sense
Theres nothing really bad about the game, but by the same token IMHO there is nothing really great or outstanding about it either.
It is what it is, its made to appeal to the lowest common denominator like WoW is and the whole thing feels average as a result. I think if it didnt have the SWTOR IP behind it there would be little interest in the game.
I wouldn't say it is bad. Does fairly well actually at what it attempts to do. Problem is that really isn't anything noteworthy outside of the storytelling premise. All in all it simply really doesn't stand out nor did I feel immersed in the game.

I agree.
The VO's are an innovative delivery system for the Quests, but beyond that, the rest of is average (with some good points and some bad points). It certainly is not the 'best' mmo I have played, and I personally do not see it being worth a monthly subscription.
Overall, it is a good solid KoToR3 single player game experience, but as for an MMO, it seems to be average (below average once the VO's and Story become old -- like how you would skip reading quest dialogue on repeat plays in other mmos).
If this game did not have the VO's and cinematics, I think it would be seen as a lower quality MMO, and not do well at all.
It's not that it's bad. It's just mediocre, and with all the hype its a bit of a let down. Those that argue its better are just in denial that its not.

The only resemblance this has to Skyrim is that SWTOR feels like a single player game. That is where the similarity ends.

It's not bad but it's not good either. It's mediocre and for how much money they invested in it, it should have been much better then a WoW clone with VOs.

I want a Virtual World, not just a Game.
ITS TOO HARD! - Matt Firor (ZeniMax)
