It comes to a point when you think a game is going to go the right way, but will it give you that D&D feeling, and right now I think NO! I always will think that getting with your friends and doing some PNP will always and forever be the best way of role-playing (As my qoute says) I will be playing DDO for through the week and some weekends when my friends and I and cannot get together for the weekend.
I don't like the warping right to your dungeon thing. I want to explore. I want to have to fight my way to the dungeon, not just get a group and POOF here we are! Also, I know DND is a multiplayer game, but I also like to solo, actually I prefer it, but this game is so group biased that at launch it will be virtually impossible to solo. They should learn from EQ2 on that subject. Soloing is as, if not more, important than grouping. (not like the old SWG though where you were all but invincable)

I think it will rise or fall completely on the instancing. If you go to an adventure and its just a hack n slash through a dungeon, it will suck. If you go to an instance and it can be a city, or a castle in the sky, or an underdark like area, or whatever and have all kinda NPCs in it as well as enemies, and you can interact with them and so on. Well then its got a shot to be a great game.
Somehow I feel it will be the former and not the latter. And this game will end up in my junk pile.

I played pen and paper D&D also when I was in my early teens. It was a blast! Everquest I can honestly say was even more fun for me. I felt like it was the true evolution of the RPG. I can specifically remember thinking "Wow this is even more fun than D&D."
I think D&D online will for sure be good, but how good remains to be seen obviously. I hope they take their time and try and really allow for the freedom and role-playing of the pen and paper game of the same name.
I'm actually morrehyped about this MMO than any I've played! (I've played every US commercially released MMO, alot of Korean ones, and a ton of "indy" MMOs)
I think I'm loving the no XP for killing monsters, the quest based gameplay, and the fact that they are trying their darndest to stick to the D&D books
Beware the Chicken, For in their silence they plot!
I think this will be the kind of game that reorganizes its genre it has such a strong AI you guys dont knowabout it will be played as if it were the real thing it will have rolls just none u can see it will be so detailed it mustve tooken them years you shouldnt critisize their great comeback tabletop needs a computer little brother
I absolutely aggree with shurijo there. They'll have to write area's like mad, and massive chain quest plotlines. With mini somethings on the side to keep everyone moving and gaining exp. People are going to want to play and play just like any other mmo, at least some people, and they'll just BLOW through quests like crazy.
Now, you dont get exp for killing mobs, o0k.. how about, kill 10 orcs to recieve 200xp. at 20xp per orc normally, that seems to me like killing mobs for exp. and what if they're set in generic cave number 6.
Go kill a griffon roost that's threatening town A. Oh look, it happens to live in generic cave 6.
Hunt down the bandit leader, track him to his hideout and return the mayor's cow... funny, i didnt see this guy when i killed the griffon.
I think it will be excellent. I remember the days when a group of us would sit in the Barracks on a Saturday night half drunk and play. You would have guys that had been playing it since they were 10 and people that just started that night. The adventure that you wouild take would be challenging and entertaining for those who had already gone down the path and new every nook and cranny.
Why would that be fun you ask? Well because you don't know what the noobs would bring to the table... by talking to some off the wall NPC or punching a horse in the mouth and starting a fight with its owner.
The thing that never happened though was someone decided to play by themselves? Yeah I guess the Dungeon Master would work it by himself plotting and scheming but as for us we only played in groups with each other... some played every weekend some played once every three months but we all had fun.
Though I have played many MMORPG's I still am searching for the ones that would take me back to this place.
Now I don't know what to say to all the PnP fanboys, which I am one of, save that it is a video game, so DDO has to have some natural constraints that the PnP version naturally did not with a human DM. I do however have faith in Turbine and WotC to bring us hopefully something fun, engaging, and challenging. The movies and screenies look great, but I am eager to play beta if I can. Be positive fellas, what else do we really have to play out there righ now... So it can't be to bad, compared to the crap that is the present condition of mmos.
Yeah, but what I have heard is that it might only groups of 14 or so on raids. That is really not too many peeps, and I don't really find that a bad number. 14 is a lot of fun, but 40 or so is kind of sillly. We shall see.
I think that for the undisputed champion grandaddy of pretty much all roleplaying everywhere, that it really has no choice but to come up short. I never played the pen and paper version of this game, so any form of nostalgia is pretty much lost on me there. Aside from beautiful graphics, and it's name, I dont' see a whole lot that appeals to my tastes here, and so probably won't be picking it up on release. Best of luck to those of you who do choose it.
I'm hopefull it'll be good, but I'm getting more skeptical the more of their design I see. Axing solo play is never a good thing. So why play a MMOG if I don't always want to group? There's a good saying I subscribe to, the problem with the internet being a global village is running into the village idiot. Just because it's a MMOG does not mean that I want to socialize with everyone who happens to log in along with me. Solo play needs to be as fully supported as group play.
Now I'm not suggesting its the same content for group or solo, groups can do things solo can't, and vice versa. Once a dev team embraces that, they should be ok. But in DDO's line of problems is exaclty what another poster mentioned, they will need to have a staggering amount of quests. And that's not going to be the case upon release. It won't be the case for several months, a year or two later? Maybe, but certainly not that first year. Especially if they try to gimmick it by having random variables of theme, location, npc, reward, because then you'll have a limited set of each and having them just shuffled between each other will get repetitive very quickly.
Mind you, I am hopeful that DDO will be good, but I'm enough of a realist to know that upon it's release it will not be. They just now entered Alpha, when they had initially said their release would be August of 2005. There's a ton of work for them to do still, and they will be under significant pressure to get the game to shelves asap and then continue it's growth once it's live. Unfortunately, its set up is going to turn off a lot of people because of of zapping around the world similiar to GW. Again, were that a option for a quick game, or you have the option to travel over a landscape, it'd be fine, but they went with only one way, and unfortunately, that manner of game design fosters a sense of impatience. IN the end, we can only wait and see, but IMHO, the wait will be much longer than its release date.
Even peace may be purchased at too high a price, and the only time you are completely safe is when you lie in the grave.
I dont mind it beeing more group orientated as long as they provide good tools to search for a group, the whole D&D pnp experience was always about groups and their adventures, tho i think it would be good if the split the group up on different mini instances, so each member had to do a small sidequest related to the main quest the group was on, was nice if they used that mechanic now and again.
As many have already said, my main fear here is that the game will run out of quests before they update the content. Also that they might resort to using the same generic instances for many different quests.
But to be honest, i will buy the game no matter what and will prolly end up preordering it, i´ve been waiting for a good fantasy mmorpg for a long time now.
So has it switched to 100 percent group only format now? I was under the impression that group instances was the main push but some solo content was available as well. I like to be able to pop on for 45 mins to an hour before bed and get something done that doesn't involve searching for a group.

Er? I just check the web site again... the question under "Can I solo"? Still says yes, solo is doable, especially at lower levels. Higher level content, however will be primarily group based.
All of this is paraphrased.
Where'd this concept of "raiding oriented" come from?

It is not like "POOF!" and you are in the dungeon, at least the Devs said is not like that. Beside the fact there are explorations zones, they have what is called "Dramatic travel", ala Indiana Jones. You see you moving on the map as you go from point A to B and as long as nothing happens, the travel continues like that, but it is very possible you encounter difficultiesi n your travel... at that point it then bring you back in game and you have to deal with whatever bandit ambush or situation you have been involved with.
As for solo Vs Group, again it has been said it is Small Group based game. meaning 2-4 people. That should not be very hard to find and, let's face it, D&D always supported group playing, especially if combat oriented. I mean.. you do not run in a fight without at least a Fighter and a Cleric, you need a Rogue for dungeons (or infinite amount of Henchmen) and having a spell caster or two is always comfy.
Have a nice day.

I am hopeful. The straight HACK and SLASH that games are turning into gets old. I like a mix of strategy and twitch.
I think DDO will supply that mix.

I agree that P&P D&D will always be much more fun then playing online because opf the interaction you have with real people around a table.
I do think there is room for a D&D online version. I hope it will live up to its namesake.

My biggest fear is that the quest-driven game will run out of quests too soon. Or the quests will start to feel too similiar.

Alot can go wrong here.
