Never Trust the Candy Man

blythegablythega Member UncommonPosts: 174

I have been playing TOR now since Beta and was sitting there after one session dissapointed and was wondering why.

It then dawned on me what it was; The only parallel I can think of is the analogy of the heavily advertised candy store:

 1. You see this amazing ad for this great new candy store and being the sweet tooth that you are you decide to try it out.

2. You enter the candy store and are confronted with an array of brightly wrapped candies, all very enticing, with the promise of new flavours.

3. You decide to purchase a selection of said candy, rush home and expectantly unwrap one waiting for that first taste of something new......

4. Suddenly you realise you have tasted this candy before. But no! This cannot be! The ad said "Try our NEW candy with incredible new flavours"

5. You frantically start opening more candy only to discover at the end that there is nothing new with this candy at all.  In fact, the candy you were previously buying was better.

Remember folks, never trust the candy man.

Great analogy! (Rarely do I see good analogies in these discussions)

You're left with the super-amazing shiny wrappers that you can simply collect but in the end, do nothing with it. The candy that you consume is excatly the same you have had before. In some cases, you will find that the candy store does not have all the other candies in your old candy store... even if those old candies were wrapped up in ugly wrappers.

Here's the thing though... some people really seem crazy about the wrappers. For the love of heaven I cant understand why, but they do and they are free to.

"Never argue with a fool; onlookers may not be able to tell the difference."

I need to take this advice more.

Wait...there was candy that came with TOR? I knew I should have bought a box copy instead of digital. Damned origin.

Seriously though, the analogy breaks down for me when you started talking about "having tasted this candy before."

I don't think I've ever heard anyone complaining that a piece of candy wasn't innovative enough or wasn't genre changing. I mean, there are tons of different kinds of candies out there, and they all are basically the same thing with a different wrapper, but people still love them.

There are some kinds of candy that some people never get tired of, and will purchase over and over again in different wrappers because what they really want is the candy inside. They don't give a crap about the wrapper, they want the chocolate bar, or the fruit chew, or the butterscotch because they like that type of candy.

Actually, it was a terrible analogy, but I suppose some people are impressed by any mediocre parallel to the point they so fervently grasp.

    I like Hershey's chocolate.

    I like Ghirardelli chocolate more.

They are both chocolates, but one tastes much better to me.

Bottom line:  The analogy sucks.  It was a not-so-clever way to phrase the not-so-clever argument that the haters love to use about TOR being "more of the same."  And the argument continues to have zero merit.

I seen this amazing ad for this new and amazing TV.

In all advertising materials it had a rectangular screen that showed pictures.

    I bought it and ...

... OH GOD!! HOW UNORIGINAL! it has a rectangular screen that shows pictures!

How dare they make a TV with a rectangular screen that show pictures? What a scam!

Can't wait till someone makes a new revolutionary TV that doesn't have a rectangular screen, and doesn't show pictures.

As a side note, how come all freaking cars have 4 round wheels? I want something unique and brilliant in every aspect!

how does it have zero merit?

ToR IS more of the same, calling people a hater due to that fact makes no difference.

its the same formula used for the past 10 years with a couple bells and whistles tied on.

I think SWTOR is the same as DCUO, Rift, WAR and so on... they all show nice videos and talk about how new and great everything will be. They change pictures and videos to prove that. And ofc we fall for it, we still hope that it WILL be the NEW thing...

Then the game is out and maybe one or two things are "new" the rest is the same and they "didn*t" have time to add this and that. Or some other excuse.

Later the game become F2P and for some reason they add more and more every month.... but you must pay for that...

SWTOR will fall in some month. They talked too much like that dude from WAR and Funcom.

    I love analogies.

Can I make a slightly naughty analogy satire of your analogy?

I will call it: "Never trust women".

    1. You see this amazing ad for a "new" night club in town with hot assed chicks and you think, "yay, something new for once".

    2. You get there and indeed there are girls that you have never seen before.

    3. You get chatting, buy a chick a few drinks, she seems right for you and you take her home. Expectantly you take off her wrapper, er, I mean clothes...

    4. Suddenly you realise she has breasts and a pus@#y like all the others and, even worse, they taste like all the other ones you have tasted and yet you were expecting - nay promised - new flavours...

    5. You frantically go back to that club the next week and try another one, but in fact the previous "candy" was the better one and now you are in a downward spiral.

Remember chaps. Never trust women. They all have breasts and pus@#ys and they all taste pretty much the same.

Waiting for a "genuine" old-skool girl that I can "sand-box".

    Regards

Spreading rumors of huge investmnent (while cutting costs of productio) to justify subscriptions. Then milking subs for as long as customers are willing to pay before turning F2P to justify charging for new content.

Sony made one mistakle with DCUO which was to sell lifetime-subs and piss off their most dedicated playerbase by going F2P, which is why BW didn't give that option.

The analogy would have made more sense if you had stated that you saw a candy store that was advertising candy that was the same as the store next door, only with better wrapping and a different look. Then, when you tried the candy, you were dissapointed because even though you got what was advertised, you wanted something different.

Except they didn't. Stop spreading this lie.

They very smugly tried to pretend they were offering something awesome to the MMO community and the hype snowballed on itself. Then you had the fanbois preach about this game to no end.

So stop pretending as if this wasn't going to be the second coming?

Was I duped? No. Check my post history if you don't believe me.

Something awesome? Yes, as I recall it was the "fourth pillar of story" that was the awesomesauce they touted. Story, over and over and over, story. A fully voiced delivery of an MMO, too.

Hmmmm, yup they delivered that. What am I missing? Point out what they said it would deliver that it doesn't. I'll wait.

The GW2 fanbois are going to be so disappointed when it turns out like Rift and WAR. Dynamic only goes so far as it is programmed to go, then it resets to the same as it was at the beginning.
