Take a risk with the candy; what could go wrong???
Let me guess the driver is John Smedley and Brad McQuaid is in the back holding a baseball bat ..... it's his new initative for recruiting subscribers now that TOR has gone live!
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience"
I have been playing TOR now since Beta and was sitting there after one session dissapointed and was wondering why.
It then dawned on me what it was; The only parallel I can think of is the analogy of the heavily advertised candy store:
1. You see this amazing ad for this great new candy store and being the sweet tooth that you are you decide to try it out.
2. You enter the candy store and are confronted with an array of brightly wrapped candies, all very enticing, with the promise of new flavours.
3. You decide to purchase a selection of said candy, rush home and expectantly unwrap one waiting for that first taste of something new......
4. Suddenly you realise you have tasted this candy before. But no! This cannot be! The ad said "Try our NEW candy with incredible new flavours"
5. You frantically start opening more candy only to discover at the end that there is nothing new with this candy at all. In fact, the candy you were previously buying was better.
Remember folks, never trust the candy man.
Don't know about you but I eat candy for the joy of eating candy not expecting somthing new every time I open one. After all I have been eating Snickers bars for years and still enjoy them.
Thank you for making it easy for me, since you are called a hater by the rabid fanboys no matter what I might just as well go on and hate rather than using arguments. I hate this shallow piece of shit and while I realize it won't happen anytime soon I would be overjoyed to see it fall and see LA and EA humbled.
The analogy would have made more sense if you had stated that you saw a candy store that was advertising candy that was the same as the store next door, only with better wrapping and a different look. Then, when you tried the candy, you were dissapointed because even though you got what was advertised, you wanted something different.
Except they didn't. Stop spreading this lie.
They very smugly tried to pretend they were offering something awesome to the MMO community and the hype snowballed on itself. Then you had the fanbois preach about this game to no end.
So stop pretending as if this wasn't going to be the second coming?
Was I duped? No. Check my post history if you don't believe me.
So, you want to accuse him of spreading lies while spreading lies of your own?
BioWare has been completely upfront about what this game was going to be, and they've delivered on that better than any MMORPG in recent history. They promised us a themepark with voice overs and lightsabers, and that's exactly what they gave us.
You don't have to like it, but don't pretend that this isn't what we were expecting all along.
Don't know about you but I eat candy for the joy of eating candy not expecting somthing new every time I open one. After all I have been eating Snickers bars for years and still enjoy them.

And sometimes a Snickers bar with almonds instead of peanuts is a nice change. So is dark chocolate every now and again. Not a big fan of the peanut butter Snickers, but I'm sure there are a few.

Unlike you , I want to see the people who put up the cash to keep this industry going succeed, wishing failure is lame and says more about yourself and your weak charachter, always easier to take the negative and wish i'll. Than attempt the forbiden and succeed.

"Forbiden and suceed"? Are you implying that TOR was a risky venture? LoL. As for my character and motives you don't know shit.
Please don't post that there could be children on these forums!

Great analogy! (Rarely do I see good analogies in these discussions)
Actually, it was a terrible analogy, but I suppose some people are impressed by any mediocre parallel to the point they so fervently grasp.
I like Hershey's chocolate.
I like Ghirardelli chocolate more.
They are both chocolates, but one tastes much better to me.
Bottom line: The analogy sucks. It was a not-so-clever way to phrase the not-so-clever argument that the haters love to use about TOR being "more of the same." And the argument continues to have zero merit.
Why does that claim not have merit ? What is TOR doing other than full voice ( which has been done before ) that is new and innovative...
Sounds like you are burnt out on candy in general .
I'm still having a hard time understanding why anyone would think an MMORPG wouldn't play like an MMORPG? The only thing that makes sense is that you are just tired of playing MMORPGs in general. IMO, this game does bring something new and refreshing to the table. However, what is the same and staple for this genre is that people are going to love to hate it while others are going to love it and say that the game is actually refreshing and new, and I can't stop playing it. Until someone lays it on a thread bullet point by bullet point how the game is a clone of other games and makes sense I'm not buying the candy you are trying to sell.

Please enlighten us.
Let me explain this a little better. Current Themepark=Hershey's chocolate.
Add some voice-overs and several other polishing touches=Ghiradelli.
Both still chocolate, one more enjoyable than the other.

You see a new FPS on the shelves, Call of Duty 1001, You have to have this amazing new game! It is the best thing ever to have happened! Then you get it, you get home, you play it, and it's the same shit. BUT WAIT, no, it has, this one little new thing, or new guns and shit! Come on, I have yet to see a NEW, unique, or enjoyable FPS in years.
How about this?
You see a new Madden NFL 9999! You must have it! It is the most amazing thing ever! Oh wait, same shit, they just put new text above the little dudes head to make you think its a new player.
I hope this gets my point across. EVERY game, every style, is always a clone/copy of something before it. They change a thing or two here and there. If you do not enjoy this game, don't play it. I've been 50 a while now, running Hard modes, doing daily quests, and enjoying the game for the most part.
Please, complain about REAL issues with the game if you must. Like the fact fleet passes can be used (consumed) over and over w/o actually going anywhere. Or server lag making some fights nearly impossible. PvP being a joke with level 50's dumped in vs level 14's. Space combat being a pointless addon feature that offers NOTHING to the rest of the game.
As a casual observer, a lurker of these MMORPG.com forums, I simply cannot understand why so many seem disappointed by this game. Being neither a Star Wars, BioWare or themepark fan it was easy to figure out that I had no interrest in this game. There was plenty of info before the weekend testing phases began, anyone interested had to know exactly what the game was.
Perhaps your like me, a person who came into this genre with the current form of themepark games, and are now tired of them. You would love to try a AAA sandbox and see what all those sandbox vets are gushing over. I don't know, but atleast for my part I could tell after LOTRO that I was done with themepark MMOs. Maybe it's taken you this long to finally find out that your done with the themepark genre for now. But, I still see no reason to be disappointed with SWTOR, from everything I've read it seems to be a well done themepark game with BioWare's flavor (assuming your into BioWare's style) added onto it.
To go along with your analogy, the candy is the same, and as good as it's always been. What has happened is your palette has changed. Join the rest of us who are either waiting for a game that gives the same level of enjoyment that the first generation of MMOs did, or are wanting to experience that kind of game for the first time.
Its not a black and white sandbox vs themepark issue, its an innovation issue, the industry has NONE and SWTOR is a prime example.
At least in LOTRO you could level in different areas you can't even do that in TOR its the most linear themepark I have ever played..
Was WoW a themepark ? Wow had many areas to explore and even if you played every class you could not see 1/2 the world..
I think the difference is not themepark vs sandbox its lack of innovation.. where are the new rides ?

You sir have hit the nail on the head i think. Many people want innovation and advancement, not another cookie cutter experience so they are dissapointed. Saying they should have known is bullshit, because if you kept up with SWTOR development there are many features that dropped that would have advanced the themepark genre and they are not in the game.
To add, there are features not in the game that actually are a regression... that is all themeparks have em, but TOR does not..
