I would say CoH. Both games are fairly similar in the mission type structure they share, except CoH has more variety than MxO.

I've come to question whether or not MXO even has a future anymore now that Sony bought it. They might stop updating it. CoH/CoV would be the safe bet.

CoH wins by default because MxO is a piece of code that no man or woman should be made to play unless they have comitted mass genocide.

While I don't trust your judgement in either of those games, if I had to chose, I'd definately go with City of Heroes as everyone else has said.

If you try both MxO and CoH, you'll instantly know which is the worst game ever made, and which is a decent game.

Consider yourself lucky that you won't experience MxO. COH although it may get boring later is leaps and bounds better the MxO, only  a hardcore MxO fan would probably differ.

I voted MxO simply becuase i played ten days worth of COH and left. What a boring game. At least MxO's combat system is more interesting to watch.

The only thing MxO has that CoH doesnt is

    A. Inventory. BIG difference if you ask me.

    B. Community. Its great. Better than SWG and I loved SWG's community.

And thats it. however it kept me interseted longer than COH ever will.

I still have to find 1 person in RL that will be talkin nicely about MxO, everyone that talk about that game is negative, extremely angry or somehow not encouraging me to even consider this game.

CoH, you rarely see well developped arguments against flaws in the game, folks want more of this, more of that, or some stuff that is not in the game, but beside a few persons that dont stand the Hamidon for the trash it is, you dont see many valid points(and there is an equivalent to the Hamidonlike trash in EVERY MMORPG I know of...except DDO, which only encourage me more to look forward to DDO).

Whatever you do, dont forget to look for DDO, it is FAR from classic D&D and the devs dont really have a clue about what was D&D, but DDO is promising nonetheless!  Could be the best product to ever hit us since slice bread with a little luck!  image

I tried a 14 day trial of CoH and I only lasted 7 days, pretty boring game.

See, this is exactly what I was saying, the folks want more or something, but they cant even clarify what.

Pretty boring dont mean the game has any flaw, it is just that the player want something more, which in my opinion mean a lot about the quality of the product, folks dont pinpoint something in particuliar.

Folks that complain about WoW or EQ usually have a few detailed points of what really piss them off in the game, they rarely just throw a: Boring.  With no further explanation.

Beside the Hamidon(raiding crap), solo nerfing and ATs nerfing, which most competitors does as well, I honestly cant pinpoing anything else that I can consider like a real flaw in the game. (Example: They adjust the exemplar thingy, it still could be more, but instead of been a big flaw like it was when you lost 3 hours, now it is not a flaw anymore, it is just ''boring'' and could be somewhat improved further, which mean it is not really a flaw in the game).  Yes I would want 936284 levels, but the fact it has only 50 doesnt mean it is a flaw, I want more of them.  image

But in COH, is the whole game skill based? or is there levels?
    Same question about MxO.

CoH is the champion of the level based system(for the better and the worst, if you didnt like a level based in the past, you could give this game a chance, you never know, it is a pure level based system, not a weird hybrid).

You slots your powers, and it make them up to 200% more efficient, but the base damage and effect is always based on a level difference between you and your target.  Example:  Your attack does 100 points of damage unslotted, now it does 300 points of damage because of how you slot it, against someone your level.  If someone is 1 level lower, it could do 10% more, so 330, if someone is 1 level higher, it could do 10% less, so 270, and so on...

CoH is level based, with a simili fine tuning...but even slotting your powers is level based as you earn those slot with levels...

If you think a game is more level based then CoH, try to convince me.

Yes Coh is level based, but its flexible also. If youre level 39, you can kill level 45's and such. Might die more but the xp will reflect on the harder difficulty. Also, you can never not play with friends due to level difference. Unlike other games if you are level 39 and a friend is level 20, you cant play together.

Coh, has a system called sidekicking and exempting. Which means if you SK someone they will be raised to 1 level below you. They wont have the higher level skills, but the skills they do have will reflect the higher level. They will also not be as effective as someone who is truly that level but they can be fairly competitive. Exempting is the exact opposite, you will lose the higher level skills you get. Like a level 20, and your 39, if they exempt you you'll be level 20, and you will lose the skills you gained 20+ but you can play with them fully at that level.

    I've played both games.

CoH and MxO have pretty much the same types of mission-style quest things. I found them both to be rather dull after a short time. Go to x location, enter building. It's instanced, so just you and your group from here out. Kill x things, get x item, exit building.

In CoH, it has more of a fantastic setting, so sometimes the things are different than humans, while in MxO it's rarely something interesting to look at (compared to say, a lava demon or something).

In MxO, you get them by calling your contacts, and they tell you what needs done. You have a large number of factions that you can increase/decrease your standing with, including the three main factions, Machine, Zion, and the Merovingian.

In CoH, you get them from NPCs that you walk to and interact with, but I only lasted 3 months in the game. It was horrifyingly linear, as in I still hadn't reached any sort of branch where I could start picking and choosing who I do my missions for. I do all the missions for guy number 1, and he sends me to chick number 2. 2 sends you to 3, and so on. Trying to talk to other NPCs that appear they might be quest givers results in them saying "You haven't been referred to me yet. Come back later."

MxO has many more community-oriented features, I think the players are more pleasant overall. CoH has bright shiny colors, MxO has the dark and dreary scheme going on (visually). CoH has fiery explosions and people running around with half-globe force-fields around them, and superheroes flying through the air. MxO has hyper-jumping and wire-fu. :P

I think they're neck 'n' neck, and neither one held my interest for all that long. However, to pick one over the other, I'd have to go with MxO. I enjoyed their crafting, their swappable skill tree, and I LOVED their character customization. I like looking like a real, ass-kicking person more than someone in tights... I loved CoH's comic book appeal. I love comics, in fact, hardcore Wolvie fan am I! But that novelty wore off fast.

Good god i would personally say neither, the leveling in both games in absolutely awful and as sarahlynne pointed out, alls you do is goto x location and repeat. Apart from playing mr hero and helping old ladies from big bad mugger groups loses it's novelty after about the 100th time you do it.

Download the trial for CoH and see what you think before you commit to buying it but i personally would rethink and ask yourself what you want from an MMO so e could assist you further. Eventhough you have probably made up your mind i will sum up the qualities of both MMO

    City of Heroes:

    BEST character design ever period!

Playing the superhero can be quite fun

Graphics and city look really good

Some of the skills you learn are really fun like flying

    Matrix Online:

Some absolutely lovely moves only let down by the godawful interlock system.

Leveling is slow and the grinding i even worse.

It has a matrix feel to it.

    The hyper jump is great

Out of the two, i would pick the matrix just because i am a matrix fan but i can definately see why most chose CoH. I also wouldn't count the matrix out with SOE buying it and it will definately be great if they add it to the station pass deal, that would mean you could play EQ2, Planetside, SWG and MxO all for less than 20 bucks each month.

Okay, it says the trial key will only work for european residents, i don't know if there is multiple versions of CoH but if there is, make sure you get the Euro one. Send me an email to s3nd3n@gmail.com and i will give you all the details.
