Ok first off yes I know the proposed changes for I5 are only on the test server. However I personally have found that everything that made the game fun is now gone. I fail to see how a company can possibly justify "improvements" which completely change the very foundation of the game's mechanics which have been established for over a year now.
I had been playing since July of last year. Had a blaster. Got smacked hard by the nerf bat. Ok fine, at level 40 I shelved that char and rolled up a scrapper. Got him to level 50 and decided I was not into playing anything but scrappers and tankers. Made a tanker and got that to 50. Finally I started another scrapper (after deleting the blaster so I could use the name) and had just hit 42 when I5 hit test.
At the risk of sounding as though I'm claiming that I'm being specifically targeted I will say, that is precisely how it feels. I know this isn't the case but dammit it doesn't change the fact that they've finally managed to nerf my fun right out of the game. To those that are staying I wish you luck.
I will admit that it IS the best game out there (before I get slammed I will also say that I would play WoW instead but the setting itself doesn't interest me, it's a good game otherwise). So I'm left playing whatever I can manage to scrounge while hoping for something to come down the pike that I actually want to play. CoH was the only game that gave me that feeling and well, now it doesn't.
And to whomever may proceed to flame me for my opinions, you're entitled to your opinion as I am to mine. If you don't like mine well then move along and don't let the door hit ya on the way out.
I wish to God I didn't know now; the things I didn't know then.

well, I was shocked with the proposed changes for I5 as well, but oddly enough I hear mostly positive feedback about how it is making things more fun for tankers and controllers. They can just sit in one place and spam a button every little while, they need to be engaged.
as for scrappers, depending on your powersets people are reporting that yes they take twice as much damage or so, but they 'arrest' in half the time to it largely balances out and you feel more powerful then before.
anyway, your results my vary...but I would say give it a chance before quitting..just my opinion

I had thought about it but it's more of a stability issue with me. As far as tankers not being "engaged", I never had a problem on mine.
As I said on another site "Considering the stability of your average comic book continuity I shouldn't be surprised."
lol
I wish to God I didn't know now; the things I didn't know then.
That's just it. It's not particular changes per se so much as it's a company making such broad, across the board changes this late in the game. Crap like this I expect in a beta not in a released game.
I wish to God I didn't know now; the things I didn't know then.
The nature of an MMO is always the friggin rebalance. I've played the test server a bit. some things I liked, some I didn't.
Am I going to leave, no. Should I beg you to stay, no. You do what you enjoy and damn what anyone else says you should feel.
Change will happen, but if you don't agree with the changes, like the aoe limit, then do some tests, report them and engage in a rational discussion with the numbers you've found to back up your arguments.
As for people who claim they are leaving due to something on test, that's just plain silly. Wait till about a month after it's gone live to make your decision. I say a month, because those people who don't go on test will come to the boards with their own concerns.
During every issue there will always be someone saying that "The Dev's ruined my fun, i'm leaving" But in the overall picture, I've seen this game improve with each issue. I've been playing since beta.
your arguement is so persuasive, so filled with knowledge and insight. You back up your argument very articulately, with suggestions of improvements and raising examples to glorify your position....oh wait, you didn't
The devs just released a post talking about how they scaled back some of the nerfs. So that is nice.
For that statement alone (let alone the rest) I thank you. At this point (having been gone for about a week now) after having had a chance to look around and see how little there is out there that remotely interests me I just might come back out of sheer boredom. I'm actually hoping that's not the case since I'd rather come back because I want to as opposed to feeling like I have to because there's nothing else I want to play.
I'll wait and see what the next month or two bring but as it stands now I'm not reinstalling anytime soon. Still thank you very much for your thoughts. I shall bear them in mind.
I wish to God I didn't know now; the things I didn't know then.
I will politely point toward the Hamidons and the HOs and tell you it is not an improvement.
I will politely point toward Accolades, althought myself appreciate them, they pretty much mess the casuals, thereby they are not an improvement to the game(they mess the casuals far less badly then the HOs).
I will politely point toward Scrappers been unable to earn solo all the stuff that can help them solo(HOs would help solo better, accolades would, finishing story you always did solo and that no grouper do anyway), they are the best soloing archtype if you consider the whole progression...and not even them are able to solo everything they need as far as solo is concerned...worser then that, not any single group can earn everything they need in a 1 group combo(the HOs are off limit to a single group).
No, the game dont improve with each issue. Most changes improve the game, but the Hamidon alone outmatch all improvements, and it was not the only bad change.
See, if in an orchestra have 30 musicians that are better than yesterday, but another 1 do an awful big BAM in the middle of the play, yesterday performance would be better then today, even if most musicians did much better then yesterday.
The Hamidon happen to be a big BAM.
Solo nerfing is another big BAM.
ATs nerfing is another big BAM. If you give toys, to remove them is never a wise choice, even if you claim ''balance'' it will still be a mistake for many players if not the plain majority of players.
All MMOs follow the same "progression curve", and they all have peoples who praise those changes.
Is CoH even half as good(FUN) compare to what it was at release? No. A minority of players appreciate those changes...there are hoards of SGs who are empty now.
1 year ago, a level 40/50 feel heroic, more powerfull then ever. Today, a level 50 somewhat feel stronger then what he was at level 1, but not as much as before and this is changing as we speak. CoH is on the EQ curve, and it is sinking saddly. In EQ/EQ2, your toon is stronger then ever at level 1, to level up is to be masochist.

Your post was a little difficult to follow but I got the gist of it and you hit on another thing that has caused me to quit.
In a game about superheroes I no longer feel all that super.
That sums it up pretty succinctly.
I wish to God I didn't know now; the things I didn't know then.
I had been flirting with the notion of going back to CoH. I left when WoW came out as I had lost almost all my CoH friends going over to it and my DM/SR scrapper, though a absolute blast to play, didn't have nearly as much fun doing stuff alone anymore. This was prior to the Elude nerf.
After reading some threads here, and then popping over to the CoH forums and spending a couple of hours reading about the changes that have occured and the ones on Test, my warm memories of my 3 characters are doomed to remain just that. Each one of my level 40s characters took a major hit in their abilities, to where I know that if I were to resubscribe, I'd feel as if I had totally wasted my time now. Too bad CoH has gone in this direction, it really was a awesome game up till all that "improvement".
Even peace may be purchased at too high a price, and the only time you are completely safe is when you lie in the grave.
Reposted as new thread, fixed a few errors.
I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.
I've been playing CoH for about a year right now. Personally, I have only seen the game expand and become more enjoyable. I do feel that some of the most anticipated content like the ancilliary power pools and the arena haven't been that exciting. Still, a great deal of the changes have gone towards making the game more engaging and fun:
Missions have gotten a lot better with each issue / battles are more engaging, especially with enemy's having the ability to knockback heroes (maybe they'll be even able to fear, taunt, and even mind control someday!) / shorter and more fun trials and task-forces are being added to the game / the new zones, monsters, Archetypes, and powersets are always fun!
Some changes, like the nerfing of Hamidon enhancements, people are just going to have to learn to accept. First of all, most of the characters with many HOs are level 50s and so this change doesn't affect a great majority of players. While they should be doing everythign possible to keep those players interested (since lvl 50 gameplay is rather unengaging as it is, besides Arch Villian fights) this might be a necessary step in adding in post-lvl 50 gameplay.
All said though, I don't really want to play CoH right now ... i've become a bit bored with it (and have even been looking to other games that might fill the void). Once the new patch comes out and my friends are playing it more though, I definitely will be back at it. Either way, I have no intention of cancelling my account for some time ... if nothing else they are trying very hard, even making unpopular decisions, for the benefit of the gameplay at all levels.
If you refer to me, the nerfing of the HOs is not a problem, the very existance of the HOs is the problem and the reason why I left and will not play the game at all. Remove the HOs completely and I would prolly be playing a month, stopping a month or 2, then back and gone and back...and so on. But as long as the Hamidon HOs even exist in their current form, I am gone.
And no, nobody have to ''accept'' a change, my regen scrapper was good, now it is a lame piece of scrap, I wont accept that and support a game that remove something as basic as that. We are talking about changing, completely, an ATs, to the point where it very reason, cese to exist. (a regen scrapper main reason is to solo, so nerfing soloing on top of nerfing regen is a double nerf)
I am a customer...and I dont have to cope with nonsense...if they nerf scrappers(regen in particuliar), nerf solo, put some Hamidon trash, well, sound to me like a new game that have nothing to do with the game I was playing.
The most fun I had in CoH was when I duo Battle Maiden (could have solo it)...and guess what, she was part of an accolade I was needing to become a better soloer, I died twice in the fight and resume it, because Battle Maiden rarely do maximum damage on her 2 best attacks in a row and you can jump out of battle after she do maximum damage on her best attack, yet it was meaning she would regen more and the fight would be longer...so it was fun...and they change it so soloers cant acquire the stuff they need to solo better...unacceptable. Everything a soloer need, a soloer have to be able to get(so anything that give ANY edge in solo need to be soloable).
If a reward make someone a better soloer, then a soloer need to be able to get that reward at least as easily, if not more easily, then any non-soloer. (simple solution, group and raid rewards dont make those persons better soloers, just better groupers and raiders, but crappy soloers, they dont deserve solo uberness if they dont earn it...solo) SOLO UBERNESS BELONG TO SOLOERS, and to nobody else...if the Hamidon exist like now, he is in the way of soloing happiness.

You ever think that is because so many people who disliked the changes discontinued thier accounts and can't post. I alone know of over 20 people who have (including myself)
I pay 15 dollars a month for added content not for them to change how my toon functions every 3 months. Reguardless of how the nerphs of I5 end up I know that in some form they are going to go live and I^ wil have more nerphs...COV will have more...I7 even more and on down the line...They have proven that they have some concept of the perfect balance and a disire to force people to play the game a certain way and their MAIN way to accomplish that is to simply change characters.
Was the major reason I left SWG was you never new what a profession could do from month to month.
They took the character creation away?
/sarcasm off

Been able to reach level 50 solo is not enought. I need to be able to reach the TOP of the soloers. If I fail I need to fail soloing...not because it is in a raiding setting that have nothing to do with soloing, but everything with raiding. Yet raiding give the best soloing rewards, which is a nonsense, since they are not even soloing.
I dont care to fight mobs that are -2 levels, as long as I can do it and solo well and earn every solo edges, soloing. I need to make fun and feel that what I do is heroic, can still be fun at -10 levels, it all depend on how it is done...if it would be a simple minion with nothing special, no it would not be acceptable. I stop playing a while ago, but I remember taking on mobs who where +6 levels and choose to stop doing so because it was to long to vainquish them...I even beat a +7 minion on a 1 vs 1 once...took me forever. Not to mention that level 54+ SO are quite...useless!
(could replace solo with grouping and is the same for me...and for the hamidon)

I started playing CoH in Beta. I continued for 9-10 months afterwards, took a short break and came back again, rince and repeat. I have to say that I am tired of my character constantly being altered. Another reason that I am frustrated is how they ignore the community. Sometimes it seems like they pick and choose arguments to follow up on. I was a Dark Armour scrapper, need I say more? The few hundred page long post on the scrapper forum regarding dark armour issues may still be up. FOR MONTHS people posted daily about it. It shouldn't take months to fix a broken class like that. People cried about that class right away when hitting high level, I didn't. Then with I2 they made it 10 times harder and decided not to repair the class for another 5-7 months (memory is iffy, im just very dissapointed).
Fact is, I don't feel the character I am playing. He is under constant alteration, and is about to be again. You aren't a superhero if you can't even save yourself in CoH. I also hate how they decided to implement capes at lvl 20. There was no mention of that when people were waiting for them to be released until towards the very end. Since when did any super hero need permission to wear a cape? AND STORY LINE BE DAMNED. I don't care about the lame story of some english "Hero1" that died. If I am going to be rescuing people I should be able to choose my accessories. I dont want CoH to become like other MMORPGS I enjoy. I do not need loot or crafting. I need fun gameplay, a character I can count on and know. Not one that is different every few months for me to entirely re-learn. And damnit, they are going to keep losing my money until its all settled (bearing that nothing really new has already stolen my interest). I think I may be on leave from CoH for some time. I guess I will be back in a matter of sorts when I beta-test/purchase CoV. Im willing to give it a thorough chance.
Positive feedback? From whom?
If you scan through the CoH forums the overwhelming MAJORITY of the posts are negative about I5.
Long time players are leaving in packs. In year I've subscribed to CoH I have NEVER seen morale this bad.
Players, quite frankly, are getting sick and tired of all the nerfs and Statesmen refusal to address the concerns of the paying costumers. His "vision" is simply destroying the game for to many players. If this is the sort of game he intended from the start then that is what he should have released from day one. It's bad business to empower a group of players with abilities to make them feel super human then decide one day to take it all way because it was never intended.
Personally, I'm looking forward to what sort of superhero MMORPG DC and Marvel comics put out on the market. Hopefully they will learn from the arrogance of the CoH development team and listen to the valid concerns and ideas of the customer base.
Why is it all developers in charge of a succesfull RPg go through a phase of "You will like what we tell you to like! We don't care what you think, this is more fun!"
DAoC: ToA (notice the sudden surge in popularity when they release ToA free servers? At least some devs do learn . . .)
EQ1: pretty much the whole time Verant was in charge
SWG: the CU
and now
CoH: I5
I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.
I do not see myself leaving over a patch like this ... Nerf or no nerf. I see it as a change in the base structure that requires a re-evaluation of the role I shall play. I shall see where I am weak and where I am strong and respec as needed.
Also from what I read on here and other forums. Most people who are complaining are saying that they can no longer solo a mission at the invincible level ...... Ummmm Ok so you can not solo on the hardest level ... this is an issue how again? Try bumping it down a bit.
I think if your big worry is that you are not the uber toon you thought you were, oh well, back to the drawing board.
The game is about more than just being the best. It is about the story, the community and the social interaction that you get from it.
Those are my thoughts not yours.
Unfortunately the story isn't very complicated or interesting. (IMO at least) In fact sometimes it can be downright lame. For example, the horid cape story.
Some people are also just tired of having to respec and re-learn. When you invest a lot of time in something to have it erased its quite frustrating. Imagine painting something you are really proud of only to have it white-washed so you have to do it again. First or Second time you may be just laughing it off. But after the 4-5th it gets REALLY old REALLY FAST. Most people who don't care about upcoming patches are those who have not been long standing community members. They will get sick of it after a few more (unless the devs smarten up before hand). I probably wouldn't be so irked with the current situation had my main char been a different build.
For me, I started collecting badges between one of the Issues as my main char was kinda useless. It was fun, but I still ended up cancelling. I had no problems getting into a group or anything. But when I did I felt I was holding everyone back. I didn't feel I was always pulling my weight. I could stay alive longer than most, but due to restrictions I was unable to participate in damage. Unless a Defender with Bubbles was around heheh.
And just to clarify, I have absolutely no problem not being able to do that hardest level using any of my alts.
I'm still playing and still having fun.
I heard from my sister's best friends cousin's nephew's uncle that they will be leaving CoH. Seirously, I'm in an active SG with 60 people. Everyone active and no talks of doom or gloom from all the players who played on test. I've played my tankers, my controllers, and blasters, tried out the new powers and had a lot of fun. Course, I don't solo much, I'm a team player. Only on the CoH boards and here do I hear the whine and this is mostly from the solo players.
All I say is this...and I'll always say this. Play what is fun for you, if changes are in the pipeline, try them out, adapt and wait a month after it hits live. No point leaving while any game changes (and this goes for any MMO) are on test.
your arguement is so persuasive, so filled with knowledge and insight. You back up your argument very articulately, with suggestions of improvements and raising examples to glorify your position....oh wait, you didn't
I left. The game has simply lost its pacing and dynamism. It's slowed down significantly from release and like many others, I just do not feel super anymore when I play. I have little or no desire to log in my level 50 FF/DB, Kheldians have never been that much fun, and I am absolutely sick and tired of slogging through the Hollows.
I've never seen an MMORPG evolve backwards before; certainly they all take big hits when the developers start feeling the need to start tinkering with things better left alone, but I've never seen a game release nearly trouble free, with unique character creation, dynamic action, goal-oriented play, great graphics and a truly unique playstyle and start changing everything to INCREASE the amount of tedium during play.
I feel even worse about the whole thing, since I purchased the game for a close friend before the release of I4 and he bought a year's subscription. Now he's regretting it and I've closed my account.
Ah well.
