For me SWTOR is not even a MMO it's so many instances and to much solo, and still it's labled as a MMORPG.
So as a MMORPG it fail really badly, as a SIngleplayer game with a monthly sub it fails even more if they took out the monthly sub like GW i would rate it much better,, I really dont like milking cows.
If it's not broken, you are not innovating.

I consider SWTOR to be a huge success as a financial vehicle. As a game? Meh.
It is a casual commando's game, and it that regard they succeeded.
I was never let down by the game because I never expected much.
This.
SWTOR might be profitable but it has done one thing great for MMO's. It has proven that you can not create the next great MMO by throwing money at it. Even with it's massive budget, there are a huge group of people that find the game boring. For most this happens after the first character is 50 and the annoyance of having VO for - every - quest really kicks in when you already know the story and just don't care. The endgame is exactly the same as WoW with pretty much zero change giving players absolutely nothing new to enjoy beyond the VO's which they are already sick of.
Big budget != Big sucess.
Greatest co'op RPG.
Biggest flop MMORPG
Did they really spend so much money on VO, or did they take to long lunch breaks?
If it's not broken, you are not innovating.
You can say that for pretty much every MMO beside Final Fantasy. Let's take WoW (since it's the most popular), you can solo it to 85 and after that it becomes a dungeon crawler more instance than any other game. People spend hours in city waiting for the dungeon finder to pop.
But in the end, don't play, wait for your next mmo to bash because it won't be exactly like you want it.
Can't wait to see all these people complain about GW2, Tera, Secret World... after they launch.
Get a life you freaking Gamer.....no no, you don't understand, I'm a Gamer, I have many lives!!
this as well. i still dont understand why people let themselves get so hyped up over generic games.
I don´t really think either is true, There is a lot of space between huge flop and great cuccess, and TOR is somewhere in between there.
The game is well made and does excatltly what it is supposed to be doing but it doesn´t really have longevity unless you play really casually.
My biggest question is where did all the money go.. because it certainly wasn't on developing a stable, innovative, addicting experience!
SWTOR can never be called a true MMO, you can't honestly get more than 40 people together without it becoming an epic slide show.
If you want solid gameplay and graphics in a themepark setting your better heading over to Rift or WoW.
I dont normally agree with precious328, but I agree here.
Philosophy of MMO Game Design
Really? I was under the impression that you were down with the coop/single player direction of the market.
Good on you for heading towards the light.
It is no where near a flop or greatest success ever. Will the game fall short of expectations to its investors? Perhaps. However, it will bring in a profit and a lot of people will enjoy their time in it.
To me this game seems as it was designed for those new and inexperienced MMO'ers. That is who the game was designed for and how they are marketing. In that area it is successful. What we enjoy as veterans is different than those in experienced in the genre, and we have to realize this.
Sent me an email if you want me to mail you some pizza rolls.
TIme will tell. My personal experience was tarnished by the fact my movement kept getting jerky. I'd hold down my W button and it would stop or just not move at all. In no other game have I experienced this. Additions to endgame will come with time, that I am not concerned about. But if they cannot basic controls right, I want no part of it.
Now anything with online optional co-op play and some minimal form of RPG is considered an "MMORPG".
The days of real MMORPG's are gone, but I do have a slight glimmer of hope that AA may deliver somewhat of a true MMO experience.
Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore)
Now Playing: N/A
Worst MMO: FFXIV
Favorite MMO: FFXI
Its obviously not either. Why take such an extremist attitude?
Biggest FLOP for me....but just as a personal opinión....
I don´t think is a flop for the company.... not as good as they dreamed for sure though.
Neither. You need to learn to see shades of grey in life. Not everything is black and white.
I see this type of statement often. Doesn't it mean however that if you didn't expect much, and that expectation was met. the game is not good?
Or maybe the game was just good but not great? Lots of people found it fun for a few months then moved on.
Not everyone is bitter about leaving a MMO. If I get a few months of interesting gameplay out of a game I am pretty happy. Anything more is just a bonus. I already have my fallback MMOs if new ones dont work out.
Generally speaking you get way more bang for your buck from MMOs than any other gaming genre. Skyrim and Dark Souls were worth the money in my opinion and I cleared them both within a week. At least I get a few months out of MMOs, even if they dont keep me from returning to my old games.
SWTOR = MMO-Lite - A step beyond a facebook game.
I'm not resentful. It did give me a two month run.
Fans will always say it is a success no matter what. Haters will always say it fails no matter what.
Consider this, Rift has 1/3 the population of SWTOR (given I haven't looked at numbers lately, they might have less). Yet most people playing Rift will say SWTOR fails and Rift is an amazing game.
The unfortunate truth is that MMOs are NOT a genre, they are a possible format for a genre. If you compare any MMORPG to almost any RPG, MMOs are just inferior games.

the game is either good and fun to play or it isn't. how much you pay for it has nothing to do with how good a game is. saying that the game would be better if it was free makes no sense because if it was free, it would still be the exact same game, with the exact same problems.

A ton of profit?
Well JR (CEO of EA) said that they would not have made the investment if they did not believe they could get and retain 1M subscribers for analysts seem to suggest 1 to 2 years. May depend on advertising etc. That is the CEO of EA talking.
He also said that it would break even / make a profit at 500k subs - analysts suggest the number could get as low as 350k. This ignores repaying the cost of development etc. EA simply write off the cost less the $60M profit (or whatever) they made from the 2M box sales. (Remember Amazon etc. etc. all they a cut and the boxes cost money - hence the reason EA are pushing Origins).
