Why would anyone buy this game to do that? I don't get it..
IF you've ever played a bioware game, you'd know what to expect from TOR's story, if you've ever played a themepark you know what to expect from it's "end-game". Why then would you fly through the main course of the game, to reach an endgame that you've played over and over and over? On top of that due to past releases you should know the end-game will not be finished, within the first month of live service.
When I read this type of thing I can't help but feel the jokes on the poster, not bioware, they got your money, and you cut yourself short.

What SWTOR has done is proved it can work in a sandbox MMO, the game doesn't have to be linear like what SWTOR is. I find the story elements of the gameplay to be completly irrelevant to how that game is designed. If you notice you speak to lots of NPCs out in the open and it locks you into a cutscene and no one can see what is happening in your cutscene unless they're grouped. It has no impact on the world and doesn't get in anyones way other than your character standing still with a speach bubble above your head.
I see no reason why you couldn't have this in a game format of SWG Pre CU. The only difference in design would be instead of the worlds being one linear line, you could go to any planet you want at any time and do the content you want. This would mean that no area ever goes unplayed as people will always choose to do different content at different stages of their character progression. This would mean I could group with my friend if I've been playing for two years and he has only just started. It isn't even like you couldn't have linear quest stories because you could easily put that in a non linear game like what GTA or Skyrim has.
The funny thing I find about SWTOR too is everything is done in mini dungeon phases which could easily be done in a sandbox game too. There is no reason for the game to be so linear what so ever because the story has no impact on the world. You'll constantly go into a phase and do content that would massively change the world and yet you run out and everything is the same. A lot of the time you've cleared out all the Mobs and that faction is sposed to be gone after the cutscene and you have to run back through them, killing them all again lol.
To me it just proves that the myth that Sandbox cannot have story content is a lie.
i didnt read because your thread is wrong. swtor doesnt have a single ounce of sandbox as far as i could tell.. so i didnt read your post. sorry. fix the title and i will gladly read it.

The only thing happening here is that you all fail to read. He clearly writes that SWTOR is lineair and never claims it is a sandbox. He only claims that the way SWTOR uses storytelling (detached from the persistant world), can also be used like that in a sandbox game.
Actually, I don't need to learn to read, however I chose not to based on the ludicrous nature of the title, having now read it I concede that it was just badly phrased and the OP was not saying that SWTOR is a sandbox. They were just expressing the opinion that the story in SWTOR is so irrelevant that even if you put it into a sandbox MMO it wouldn't actually fuck it up and would just become a minor irritant.

SWTOR is not a sandbox game. What is this thread even about if the title is already completely wrong.
This. Plus, in a well designed sandbox, the players drive the story so no need for a complex pre-determined storyline...
I would like to see more tools in sandbox games for player created missions that can actually effect the world.
That is basically what the OP means. Not specifically for content creation tools used by players, but more in general to be used in a sandbox environment (by dev or player).
I think that its a smart observation from the OP, just badly phrased like someone else mentioned.

I will take a professionally well crafted story to amateurish player created story any time any day. I used to play NVN & Dungeon Siege. 99.9% of the user created mod is crap. I don't think it will be any different in a MMO.

No what I mean is give players the tools to create quests in game that fall within the lore. Like a formula or something and they add the location and the loot. Like what SWG did kind of but more refined.
"I am not in a server with Gankers...THEY ARE IN A SERVER WITH ME!!!"
The OP doesnt claim that SWTOR is a sandbox. Learn to read pls.
He only says that the storytelling cutscenes could be used in a sandbox game too. For this he uses preCU SWG as sandbox example.
i can read just fine. what i chose to read is up to me isnt it? if i need to reword it...
The title for this thread is very misleading. by saying "SWTOR has proved you can have story in a sandbox mmo", one will infer that you are indeed saying swtor is sandbox and swtor story works well in the game. based upon that sole reason, i refuse to read the post based on the title. so i can read just fine ty
the title should have been more along the lines of "SWTOR story could be incorpareted into a sandbox mmo". This would be more along the lines of what he really means wouldnt it?

The claim in the title has nothing to do with the fact if the OP thinks that SWTOR itself is a sandbox or not. There is nothing misleading about it.
Also, when such a claim is made, explanation usually follows. Which happens in this case. That you then just chose not to read it and (wrongly) assume something different is your choice of course, but it still doesn't make it more then an assumption on your behalf.
I agree that it was badly phrased, but it still didn't claim what you assumed. Even if you only look at the title.

sorry for being rude, i wasnt trying to be. I just didnt want to devote my time to actually read something, when the title is misleading. i'm an old fashioned person. If i think a title is misleading, then reading something that might actually be an epic read is very hard.
my english teacher drilled that the first sentence will either make or break whatever it is your reading. in this case it would be the title.
How about a sandbox with an optional to follow storyline. A pve element that caters away from the pvp element of the game. Kind of like incursions in eve online although not so fail worthy.
A great sandbox would be able to give you as many options as possible to create the game experience that you want. A forced story driven sandbox wouldn't work because not everyone wants that, but to have a secondary PVE storyline you can choose to follow would fall perfectly within what a sandbox wants to achieve.
I think you are mistaking sandbox with theme park MMO. The story in SWTOR is the only good part about the game. Everything else is too easy and boring to really even call it a game. "Playing it" felt like watching a movie. The end game content is PUGable in green gear. It isn't a gamer's game.
The story elements had an interesting twist on the how the game played and how the community actually reacted while playin git (not so much chat spamming for one). But other than that, it is one of the worst games ever made as far as gameplay and difficulty go.
Let me familiarize you with "The players drive the story".....
Lets just say I have a guild in a sandbox game. It is in-game religious guild of monk-pacifists.(Like Trapist monks and not kung-fu) We wear robes during ceremonies we create- sacrificing animals as events, players give sermons while the other monks sit around and listen. We never go to war and "Prophecy" in the center of towns cryptically through the /say or /yell channel. While not choosing any side of any war.. we can still decry the aggressors by donating armor we made to the righteous guild secretively. Donating swords would be off-limits because it only leads to more destruction. We make beer and place it on a vendor so that people can purchase it. The roleplay possibilities and stories are endless in this type of situation.
This is an example of "Players driving the story". The roleplay here is much more fun than quest hub grinding in my opinion and probably would be to many more people if they werent raised on games such as WoW and held such a narrow view of what sandboxes are all about. But, the real challenge is not getting sandbox-naysayers such as yourself over to our side. The challenge is having more sandbox players embracing roleplay instead of playing current sandboxes as if they were Modern-Warfare.
LOL .. i have to sit through "player created sermons"??? Kill me now.
None of this sound any fun. I would much rather to fight a boss with interesting mechanics. Do you realize why this kind of role-play never take off now?
It does exist and you dont actually sit there for an hour. In addition, alot of the people interested in roleplay have and still do take on challenging bosses in themeparks. What Im referring to is not the antithesis of a good boss fight. What Im referring to is the appeal of a player-created sandbox content.
I could also tell you of stories of midevil guilds that when going to war they form formations, ready their spears and charge at their enemies syncronized all wearing the same guild tabard colors and leaving the battlefield victorious. Its a place where heroes of battle are recognized for thier skill. There is no Deadly Boss Mod telling them to move right or left, they work as a team for a common goal for reasons that expound what a themepark could ever do.
So I agree some themepark boss fights are fun to do,(But only if you dont read guides or use faceroll addons) and if you actually try to figure out the mechanics yourselves). What I am saying is that player generated content does exist, it happens on a pvp, and non-pvp levels, and even people roleplay when doing PVE content in sandboxes.
Why do you think people are always begging for and praising "Open World" and the removal of quest-hubs and/or levels? Its because thats boring. And people want freedom to be whatever they want to be in a virtual world.

Define "a lot of people". I haven't met a single one. RP servers are not that popular either. You really think there are many guilds that will do what you just describe? It is a miracle to get people to show up for raids. That is why LFR is popular. You no longer need to get 10 people together. You can go with just 2-3 friends, and even alone if everyone is busy.
You can tell me stories .. but they don't sound fun. Who is begging for the removal of quest-hubs and levels? Who is praising for open world? A small minority who does not play their MMOs and instead whine about it. Most people just play for fun.
People do NOT want a virtual world that free to be bored. People want fun content and combat. That is why Diablo series is so popular. Just look at the biggest MMO in the world. Do they response to players by moving more open world? No. They move towards more lobby-like SMALL GROUP content. And that is the future of the genre.

"Alot of people" that play sandbox games. RP'ers are a gem in the rough in FFA PVP games, and there arent enough of them, but it is still looked upon as a group that adds something to the game.
Im not saying the majority of people dont want themeparks because rather... the majority of people probably do and their first foray into MMO's were just that.
My whole entire point was responding to someone laughing about "player generated content" and that it doesnt exist and in my opinion is alot more fun than planting 10 explosive devices on 10 barrels and then reporting back to an npc for his next task.

Yes, they got my £22.99.. But they will not get any monthly sub out of me, I hope the current players continue to enjoy TOR's story line.. The moment I decided to not continue playing swtor was at level 50 on my Powertech, I looked around for something to do and found nothing.. all my tradeskills @ maxed.. stored 700,000 ish credits.. Maybe I overplayed it.. (3 hours a night and 5h on weekends).. But EQ I would not even be level 10.. (I would be running away from terrifying Gnoll trains in Blackburrow)......... The *spacebar* quoted above is what they are almost forcing you to do.. my first 3 alts made my spacebar a very busy place to be (not on class quests) but on the other quests which I HAD DONE BEFORE!!.. *yawn*
