In EU beta you definitely could NOT delete your character once he levelled past 5 (the seven day cooldown was in place). So you both can be right, if the US version allowed deletions.

Yes a little research & I found that, in fact, ONLY the EU "sneak peak" weekend did NOT allow the remaking of multiple characters.

However, the USA CB1, the one this thread is dedicated to, DID let you remake your character multiple times and DID NOT have any deletion safeguards.

All of that being said, I still believe Themeparks are going out of style. It apparently started with Rift & SWTOR being pretty much the same incarnation of WoW with just different "skins". I've noticed this more & more as SWTOR's population continues to dwindle. The Themepark model is just, quite simply, NOT a productive market anymore since WoW has the "ThemePark Niche" covered.

Don't be mistaken, Themeparks, Sandboxes, SandParks, Hardcore Full-Loot PvP are ALL pieces of the market as a whole. Themeparks, most notably WoW, are NOT the defining products for what an MMO is. Themeparks have just done a VERY good job at capturing their "piece" of the market. This is HIGHLY noticable when you realise that there hasn't been a SINGLE "AAA" sandbox developed to date.

The closest "AAA" Sandbox is considered SWG Pre-NGE, however they didn't feed anywhere NEAR enough money into SWG to begin with to even call it a "AAA" Sandbox. Not to mention the numerous mishandlings on SOE's part. So, at the end of the day, the "piece" of the MMO market as a WHOLE that has been the most successful has been the part of the market that has been invested in the most.

The only unfortunate part is that particular "niche", being Themeparks, is so simple it's almost unbearable at times :(. WoW is not what launched the MMO market, open-ended exploration SOCIAL games like Everquest are.

    :)!

So after dealing with IGN's completely broken account system ever since they started to move from an older login system I was able to log into TERA for about 8hours last night.

Only to find, that the game starts off as YET ANOTHER Linear-Handholding Themepark. Now, don't get me wrong. I WANTED to love TERA ever since I saw the combat & all the features BlueHole had been talking about for the game over the past 2years.

So, after trying SO VERY HARD to shrug off the fact that TERA was, in fact, ANOTHER Linear Themepark (at least for the first 20 levels, hopefully?) I was able to start enjoying myself around level 8. However, after reaching level 15 with my Popori Slayer (which is more satisfying than you could imagine to be a tiny badger guy flipping through the air with a GIANT sword) I found myself FORCING myself to continue. I literally lost interest at level 17 altogether, and wound up deleting my 15 Popori Slayer (1 character per server in beta?) to try all the different classes to HOPEFULLY find something that could keep my interest.

Unfortunately, by the 8th hour into TERA I had tried ALL the classes up to about level 10, with slayer being my highest at 17, and ended up logging out before the CB1 closed out. The combat is fun to begin with, but then it gets VERY repetitive & boring once you learn how a specific "type" of monster attacks. Some attack quickly, some attack VERY slowly with HIGHLY predictable animations, and some are just so laughably designed in terms of combat tactics that you go "is that it?" at the end.

All in all, I unfortunately did NOT reach level 20 so I'm not sure if TERA opens up after 20 (a poor design choice as a game SHOULD "hook" you from beginning to end, from one element to another of the game) so I'm not the person to ask if 20+ TERA is any better. However, 8hours, trying all the classes, and being struck with the "This is a Themepark" sensation right off the bat completely destroyed my likelyhood of ever Pre-Ordering, or even playing for that matter, TERA by the time it comes out.

    The Recap:

-Combat is fun and innovative at "first", and then becomes repetitive & boring for PVE, HOWEVER PVP in TERA is very fun as combat against other players seems to "evolve" as you fight someone more and more into a fight.

-Leveling 1-17 is ALL hand-holding quest driven, and is about as Linear as it gets. Again, a VERY poor choice on BlueHole's end for TERA's first 17 (or 20?) levels to introduce the player into WHAT TERA is really "about". Overall, the largest deterant for a new player to TERA who was looking for something OTHER THAN another Linear Themepark.

-Some classes leave you with a sense of "So what's the point here?". The most GLARING would have to be the Berserker & Warrior. Albeit, I'm told both are being "buffed" for CB2, but the point still remains WHAT really could be the point of an obtrusively slow class with a MASSIVE hit index like the Berserker when you have a Slayer that is FAR more agile & deals MORE burst damage over time thoughout a fight (again, design choice so no matter how many times they buff the Zerker this should never change). Not to mention that the "Warrior" is really just a disguised "Rogue" class that uses swords instead of daggers & armor instead of leather. Again, Warrior is NOT meant to be a tank.....nor is it meant to be a DPSer so what REALLy is the point? However, a Warrior is actually the MOST agile class in the game. So, still not REALLY seeing the point here?

Nitpicking aside, what were your experiences with TERA? Did you get past 20, and if so did the game REALLY "drastrically" change from the 1-17 experience, or were they essentially the same? (Instance running doesn't count, as that is a MAJOR feature of Linear-Themeparks).

I just read your recap, didnt bother with the other but get a clue when it comes to class roles, berserkers do a LOT of damage its just hard to hit. Great for grouppvp if you have someone stunning for you, and the warrior is a tank, an evasion tank. But you are judging a game by what i would like to think of as mostly tutorial levels.

That's exactly what he's judging it by, nobody that judges it harshly has made it passed level 20. Since when did the beginning of an MMO bear the brunt of the judgement. I thought it was high levels/endgame, but people are being extremely brutal with TERA.

5 minutes in and they quit and go on a rant. Someone like towelliee who I never thought would like this actually took the time to level up and loved it, totalbiscuit played higher level content and loved it, steparu a well known game reviewer absolutely loved it.

Why do only the bad reviews get posted?

Your giving a recap on a game that is all about end game, when y ou are not even half way to end game?  I can vouch for this game as I played Korea...it is a blast.

Correction he didn't even make it 1/3rd of the way(level wise), which with some hardcore play only takes a single day. What has gaming come too...

[Mod Edit - Stay on topic please.]

Well seems I'am not allowed to say why there is so much negative feedback here, the mod deleted my message after a few seconds of posting.

Anyway thing is people dont make it to more than level ~15 on average and then they think its a bad game because they just see the introduction. Honestly at level 20 you are just getting your first real taste of the game and imo it takes even longer before you can give a fair review considering its quite endgame heavy.

I would ask the OP to please make another class and try to get past lvl 20, the game does improve a lot, however another thing that made the combat much better before then for me (as a zerker) was to round up many mobs, and use AOEs and more blocks, (or dodges as warrior), it really helped to break the WoW habit of one mob at a time.

As to the linear, u get choices for regions, repeatables, and if u break it up with enough duals and random wandering its not as bad as other mmos,. It all depends on whether you can lose yourself in the combat, the rest shouldnt really matter. That of course is a matter of taste, though many are not giving it a chance. Some classes feel better than others, also there will be more pvp options in later betas.

Also about this issue that peole seems to judge the game prior to 20 I wonder if that will be resolved with the next patch which i think is meant to revamp the level 1-40 zones.

Imo the game becomes interesting once you can do the dungeon and BAMs.

  • El-HefeEl-Hefe Member UncommonPosts: 760

i played to lvl 10 it was all handholding, quests that had me talk to the banker and the gathering expert, none of the mobs were hard, i only had 5 spells to use. all very basic and easy.  honestly i really wanted to like this game but it's way too easy and boring at lvl 10.

    I've got the straight edge.

  • FadedbombFadedbomb Member Posts: 2,081

SOME of you have missed the point of my OP ENTIRELY.

To the Point itself: A player should NOT have to wait until they're more than a 3rd through the game to find it "fun". By level 20 the game SHOULD have "pulled" me in, but it did NOT. You're saying because I saw the 1-20 part of the game in as little as 5hrs (last 3hrs was rerolling characters) that I shouldn't be judging the game.

HOWEVER, I've been playing MMOs long enough to know when a game pretty much is like the first half of it (save for raiding, pvp etc). With that having been said, I CLEARLY stated I did not get past 20 because 1-20 was so boring, linear, and Quest-HandHolding that I lost interest with every class I played. Quite frankly, that is a poor model for gaming, and many of you need to sit back and rethink what you're talking about.

Now please, stop derailing the topic :(. I already touched on many of these aspects in my OP, and not to mention being critical about games that require critisism is a GOOD thing.

As I pointed out before, a game shouldn't take until end-game to be FUN. Quite frankly, TERA is NOT fun 1-20. Again, I've not played past 20 for a reason, and there is REALLY no "counter point" to that other than I don't like Linear Quested Hand-Holding, which is what TERA is 1-20.

Actually there is a reason, few people complain that the game is hard and cant play it properly etc, that is why they need that easy start. Yet i feel that they should have added BAMs from level 5 or so which would make the people who find the game easy capable of leveling fast and leaving the low and easy levels behind rapidly, maybe that is what they will do with the new patch considering they at least noticed there was an issue.

EDIT: If you are level 20 then you should go out and try to kill some BAMs or do the dungeon, if you dont find that fun its probably not a game to your liking.

EDIT2: Anyone else having issues with the forum currently? Sometimes when i click this topic i get redirected to the index of mmorpg.com again... (???)

I laughed when I read you think of Themepark MMO's ( which all  pve centered mmo's have become if your referring to the linear questing/leveling ) as "Niche". I dont see how you can call games with well into the millions of subcribers / players as niche when you compare it to sandbox games such as MO ,  Fallen Earth and such. Those of us that read this forum, reply to topics and start our own topics for the most part are the "Niche". We are many of those that started playing MMo's like EQ, Camelot and UO and we hunger for some type of return.

I too played Tera this last week end and I have to say I did enjoy myself a bit. I started off as an Archer and found the first 9 levels too easy and chose to start a Mystic on the other server. I found it a little more challenging, almost a reminder of what it was to be a shaman in EQ just with the utility and being a valuable group class.

Did I know what type of game I was going into, yes. I think the fact I havent really played an MMO in over a year or more helped. I actually took the time to read the quests and not just click and hammer them out, did you? Story wasnt ground breaking but did add something to it. I also didnt just go grab one mob at a time, as it was mentioned earlier in this topic I grabbed multiple mobs. It added to pace of the game, made me move around more and utilize my skills/spells and such.

I wont disagree with you that this game will not have a large player base and after the first few months it will lose sub's and be left with its own Niche playerbase. I also felt the same way you did when I tried out SWoTR, I didnt even get through a day with that game. I dont care if you voice over the quests givers the game looked like it came out 5yrs ago and wasnt anything new that I saw except for the NPC voice overs. Way too many NPC's just standing around with no interaction, I am hoping GW2 is going to take that extra step to really immerse you.

Getting off topic, but I think you and I think alike in regards to what we may be looking for. In my opinion though we are the Niche and we have to depend on someone to take a chance and say hey, im ok with a 500k player base with the opportunity to pull from the millions of newer players that have only played WoW, Rift and SWoTR.

Anyway, here goes to hoping Tera will hold me out till GW2 and hopefully EQNext will be that combination of EQ/Vanguard and some new elements.

When you go buy a new TV is it still in a factory with half the components on the tables. Thats what this is, many things are still missing.

The issue i have is seeing so many people post about a new game sucking because they experienced it all in a day of beta.

As for this being a poor model and throwing it in peoples faces do you really think you know better than all these huge companies pooring money into these games? Yea, a niche few of us dont like them but apparently the millions of others that continue to buy them and come back do. You want stock in a companey that caters to thousands or millions?

Look, I have been a member here for a long time and I dont usually post, I imagine I had way too much caffine this evening. It really sounds like you and I are looking for the same thing but it also seems like we are a select few uhtil a company goes against the current grain and takes a chance.

I lay my hope as you do in some upcoming games, mine being EQNext and really I hope that 38 Studio's does something different considering the companies founder was a heavy EQ player.

Until then I know that I will spend 50  bucks here and there and pay a few months sub but in the end its my entertainment and really its not all that expensive as many other things are. I keep my eye out for new games and hope that they will not be swayed by share holders but keep thier original ideas alive.

Here is my complaint list in one little post..

People bad mouthing or being negative about a game not even out of beta and that was open about certain elements being gone or not operational. I myself dont even know if there will be multiple starting area's, I hope so.

People not understanding that many of us are the few, the niche.

People complaining that a PvE oriented game has sucky PvP, really?

Anyway, thats it and good night.

You can be as critical as you want about a Beta if the elements being complained about are IN the beta & ARe operational.

They didn't just "take out" the non-linear elements of the game. THAT IS the first 1-20 levels of the game. More importantly, TERA has been out in KOREA for over a YEAR and it failed hard. Now, the failure COULD be blamed on the specific "Korean" market that doesn't really conform to western ideals. However, there is talk of them revamping the 1-40 area.

Again, i've done this "song & dance" before with MANY BETAs in the past. "Sweeping" changes just simply do NOT occur before launch of a product. Quite frankly, TERA being released in the EU & US is a "More Content" version of what the Koreans were given.

Now, as for the US & EU's version of TERA releasing in May all I have to say is that so far the 1-20 experience is a Linear Hand-Holding piece of Themepark HappyFunTime. If YOU like Themeparks then this game is definitely for you in its current iteration.

HOWEVER, if you were like me (as many TERA fans were in the same boat in the West) expecting a Non-Linear Non-HandHolding Quest MMO then you should be warned. If the 1-40 "revamp" does NOT drastically change the dynamic of the 1-20 experience TERA isn't a non-Themepark fan's cup of tea.

Lots of derailing going on here suddenly :(. I think many of you need to re-read my OP :/.

Its not the game that is the problem, its you.....

TERA gives you a choice of group questing, hunting BAMS, grinding, Solo questing or doing instances for EXP.

Now i dont see this "linear" thing you are talking about. Not all games will start with 500 ways to level up and am sure that you are a sandbox fan because ever since the start of MMOs, Themeparks are still the same. Its clearly not for you and If you were actually following it for 2 years like you said. You would know  at least what you getting into and you clearly didnt.

Hes just one of those guys looking for something to revolutionize the gaming world and cause a super commontion, which will NEVER happen, the game is absolutely fantastic IMO and you can look to have fun with it instead of being boring and just following quests.

He also is basing this off one day in Beta and he still doesnèt realize levels 1-20 suck in just about every MMO of all time imo. Or atleast are pretty lame compared to what most people care about, high levels and endgame.

Regardless the first 1-20 werent even bad considering I could do them in four or five hours, thats not a big deal at all, you peopel are way too cynical.

Never understood this "it's only beta" defense of a game. Never in my life have I seen a game change drastically from beta to launch. The framework is there, it's like a house, beta is just the unpainted and non lived in version of the finihsed product. No beta has ever gone back and rebuilt from the ground up. Just fixed a few interior things to function properly.

Technically hunting BAMS is grinding too. Just grinding on bigger mobs. Group questing and solo questing is still questing, not really a different option, just a different way of doing the same option and instances don't exist at all levels which I doubt you can do to max level. Even if you could instance run from the first to max level, that is technically grinding, just in an instance. So, the choices are actually quite smaller then you think.

Especially a beta of a game that's been released for a year already.

That's so wrong. Themepark games, early on, were much closer to what people would now call "sandbox". DAoC had multiple ways to level up. Kill tasks, quests, group mob grinding, randomized instances, PvP, PvP quests... And that's a themepark game, from 2001.

Games like LotRO, a modern example of an MMO, your only way to get exp is to do quests. It is very nearly impossible to do it any other way.

The problem is with lazy, limited game design that WoW and its clones encouraged. Any time instances are used, a developer has taken a cheap way out. Any time a game is linear in focus, its because the developers don't know how to properly balance content.
