The Guild Wars 2 blog has been updated with a post by Mike Ferguson that lays out how the world vs world PvP will look in Guild Wars 2 and should get people REALLY excited! Think siege engines, capture points, resource control, castle keeps and persistent two week events and you start to see an emerging picture of how this innovative system will work.
The WvW system will pit three worlds of hundreds of players each against one another on maps of massive scale. The idea is that no one team will be so dominant that the other side is obliterated. It affords the opportunity for the other two teams to band together to take down a more powerful foe.
We dreamed of a game where players could work together to capture objectives on the battlefield, like keeps and towers, claiming them for their guilds, then upgrading fortifications before defending them against hordes of attackers. With players from three different servers fighting each other, we knew that we would need a lot of different areas for them to fight over, and we wanted to have plenty of locations for guilds of all sizes to claim as their own. With this in mind, we created a number of different objectives that are designed to be captured and contested by large groups, small groups, or even just a few players.
Players will not only be taking on each other in these massive-scale battles but will also have to take on guards, bosses and more in an effort to gain control of the keeps and towers. In addition, smaller keeps will be included and less protected resource camps which will end up playing a huge role in the WvW system as resources are needed to build siege machines and repair damaged keeps.
Players will be able to construct machines to help them capture strategic points and to lay siege to their enemies. Among these are: Trebuchets, Arrow Carts, Catapults, Ballistae and Siege Golems.
As the battles last up to two weeks, teams will be able to upgrade their keeps by making more powerful NPC guards, walls and more. They will be able to construct persistent anti-siege measures like boiling oil pots and teams will be able to hire bands of mercenary fighters.
For instance, you might help a group of ogres protect their camp against constant harpy assaults. In return, your new ogre allies will go rampaging toward the nearest enemy objective or send out patrols to help you hold on to your territory. These factions won’t fight for you indefinitely, but they can help turn the tide of battle, so you’d be wise to recruit their aid whenever possible!
Teams will also face off to capture and hold the Orb of Power in their keep's special altar. Getting the orb will be no easy task as teams will have to take down an uber-boss in the form of the Keeper of the Orb.
Any player will be able to take part in these battles as players will be automatically leveled to 80 to take part and will be able to work to upgrade weapons and gear during the course of these epic struggles.
Character level adjustments have a limit, however. The level-adjustment system won’t let a level 1 character go head-to-head against a level 80 character with much chance of victory—a level 80 character is still going to have more bonuses on their gear and access to a full complement of utility and elite skills that players just don’t have at lower levels. This is not to say that the high-level character will one-shot the level 1 player, but they will have a clear advantage.

Seems like the dev's have been listening to what players have been asking for and their prepared to deliver.
I for one can't wait to play this game - it sounds awesome!
Oh.....my....!
Awesome, I cant wait !
YES!!!! YES!!!! YES!!!
Holy crap I see some giant dragon in the other pics at blog =O.
so if the supply caravans can be escorted, can they be attacked? if supply lines can be cut, i will be so happy.
EDIT: "Hopefully you have someone who can help protect the caravans delivering supply to your keep, or you may not be able to hold off determined attackers for long!" YES!!!!!
Interesting.
Ugh, looks like i'm going to need a good divorce attorney.
I just had a wargasm.
This looks even more amazing than I anticipated. People worry about endgame in GW2? Hell, good luck finishing the game... I'll probably spend too much time in the Mists.

What's worse for me, is the wife is playing this too. No one will eat in my house for weeks. Thank god the kids are old enough to feed themselves.
but that's ok, so 5 years from now we can say how MMO's are so playground oriented and we need something different
as far as I know TSW and Prime dont have keep siege.
Nothing about degrading gear or anything. kind of makes me feel crafting in relationship to pvp will be little more then a side gimic like siege weapons.
This also makes me wonder about maps. Do i capture the center and then move in and capture the enemy borderlands? or are these 4 separate maps which are not connected to each other in the slightest.
This is exactly the kind of attention to detail that will evelate this game.
Honestly, the ambition and imagination ANet is putting into this title is inspiring.
He didn't say up to 100 players, he said over 100 players from each server.
They've said they can currently handle up to about 500 players prior to any code optimization, so take that 100 number as a number thrown out there as an example. I'm sure they'll kick it up even more as things go along.
Oderint, dum metuant.
its 100 players per side. WvWvW is three sides = 300 players.
They stress tested this a few weeks ago with 500 if memory serves.
Yeah my fault on the OP. I did change it to reflect a more accurate description. Sorry for the confusion.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
OK, now they've got my attention. Thought I might hold off at launch to see how it all turned out, but rethinking that position and might be there on day 1.
Where's that pre-order page again?

Meh, just a mishmash of a few systems already out there. I personally feel it is regurgitated systems from over 10 years ago. I personally think it will not work how they want... they will never have 100 players vs 100 players, sorry to break any hearts but not realistic thinking.
