Interesting choices. I agree that SWG wins being the best balance of everything good.

Lots of easy AFK systems on that list and casual friendly crafting.

If you were going into games with the interest of crafting only and a large engaging grind than I think your list would change a bit and games like Vanguard would be closer to #1 but Vanguard and EQ2 both have auction houses which I think is kind of lame, people do not need crafted items much, and its difficult to earn lots of money as a crafter unless you are a high end crafter which has a rediculous grind. I would call Vanguard #1 if you want the most complex and engaging crafting with lots of crafting quests. Definitely the best crafting that can be found in a themepark game by far though imo.

EVE has the best economy. Its economy is so good that it could've been number #1. Risk vs reward with potential threats involved with many trades makes for a more realistic feel than most games.

Darkfall's crafting is very rewarding being that its a full-loot game with item durability and crafting eventually builds a powerful PVP character (crafting builds character stats so you get really tough eventually). The mats are much funner to collect than the other games as well imo since you have the thrill of danger and certain mobs drop certain mats which may take someone into parts of the world that they would have normally missed. Enchanting is fun with customizing armor sets with your name on it. Everyone crafts in Darkfall in some way. It may be just food but everyone crafts something which can be annoying getting started if you are just trying to sell items like in other games.

I did not get very far in FE's crafting but liked how casual friendly it is and do not typically play F2P games so not sure of the other one. I played around with Rysom's crafting enough to get a feel for it and I agree with others who said that it could have been on the list. Mortal Online has so much customization that it is worth mentioning in any crafting discussion but I do not like how being a crafter results in a weaker character.

I have to say SWG pre NGE crafting was a true experiment/crafting system (nothing was the same) and better than Vanguard (a mind numbing grind fest) as well as EQ2 (similar to Vanguard's but better done).

My vote goes to SWG crafting, as it was the only one I have actually had fun doing.

If you have not played Fallen Earth, you are missing out on one of the best crafting systems ever introduced. I craft gear, food, and even transportation that is better in overall stats than quest items and vendor fair at the level of my toons. I really enjoy a system that rewards you with crafted items that honestly meets the needs of your character.

Ryzom do not have such great crafting system. It has absolutelly superb harvesting system! I played the game for years couse of harvesting... But not much rewarding since there are just few items you can make from all those mats. Wish more games have such fun harving!

If we should find best crafting mine list would be like:

    1) Atitd (anyone who spend a month ingame tell you this is absolute #1)

    2) Istaria

    3) Vanguard

Maybe Wurm to fit somewhere here (didnt play actively). Eve very propably.

    Nice reading anyway :)

for AO: I played alot of AO. Very nice game, and still nice, even after all those years. But Tradeskills there was not so good to get to top gamelist, imho. They are well incorporated into skill system though.

I can't believe that horizons/istaria was not mentioned. Their Crafting system was vibrant and by far the most intense of any crafting system seen today. The ability to build your cities like in darkfall was done by Horizons years before they came along and horizons is still active, though in seriouse decline over the past few years.

Iv played horizons for a while from release i think the game was amazing never got a chance to delv into being about 14-15 (i think) and comp being crap.

There was a channel called game network that advertised it alot, think the collaberated maybe, also played myth of soma and mir from that channel too.

Ex. myth of soma, legend of mir, mu online and eudemons online player.

Current game : Runescape (until pc build is complete)

In my opinion dragonica has a good crafting, im enjoying colleting items on its dungeon specially on peak hours when players all want the same item, loved the roulette system for distributing items.

I miss the clang, gurgle, saw zip and poison scratch of UO. Good times.

Trammies need to stop polluting the MMORPG landscape. They already have enough games in which to emote hugs and sell garbage by the banks.

    1. ATITD (A tale in the desert)

    2. WURM

    3. Vanguard

    4. Istaria

    5. Ryzom

ATITD and WURM are very unique. ATITD has no fighting (other than political) and Wurm is an amazing game with a really difficult interface to use. But they should both be the standard at which developers look at when creating new crafting games.

Wurm is great.  I never felt so apart of a game like I did here.  I just wish the graphics, combat....everything else was great also.  Wish I could find a game like this.

Final fantasy XIV is worthy of a mention too. It's not just click a button from a recipe and wait nor is gathering just right clicking and waiting.

anarchy online, istaria, uncharted water online, final fantasy series?

    Talk about mainstream

Vanguard was boring as heck and conusing.

You were given little direction on how to get started, where to go or what you could do.

The quests were endless and lacked reason.

The graphics no better then what I suggest below.

And I'm tired of seeing it listed as a good crafting game.

Ashen Empires, while old has better crafting then 1/3 in that list and a better overall game.

I notice Wurm Online is not listed, shameless given it has 136 skills 90% of which are crafting.

IMO, pre CU SWG should take the top of this list.  I can not think of another game that was able to produce super-star players based off of their crafts alone.

However, I'm surprised that I haven't seen Mortal Online mentioned.  This game has a very in-depth and secretive crafting system which surely deserves a place on this list.

This thread is 2 years old now... but I'm CPR certified  =)

SWG - hands down the greatest crafting system to date. It may not have been 10/10 in every category when compared to some of the other honorable mentions on this stunted list, but wins overall in my opinion.
