I have always been best with a DPS class. In WoW, I was great with my Hunter in PvE and deadly in PvP with my Rogue. In LOTRO, Burg (though my main was a slow Guard). And so on...
But the problem that always comes with being a DPS class, is that everyone wants to be DPS. Therefore, no one ever needs one.
Will this really not be an issue in GW2? I don't see how...
I am thinking about the Ranger or Thief. However, I could be a healer, as I was pretty gnarly with my Resto Druid in WoW (but, really, Resto was easy button).
What do you all think? Beta players?
Comments
Oh wow.
This won't end well.
I'll give it a go.
Firstly, forget everything you know about balancing a group in an MMO. There are no healers or tanks in GW2. Everyone has self heals. The devs have said you could make a group with only one class and still balance it because of how much what weapon you're using changes your combat mechanics and role. What weapon you have equiped actually changes what abilities you can use. So in a group you won't be thinking about managing threat and keeping your friends healed, you'll be choosing your weapon based on considerations like your own play style. Support and crown control, from what I understand, will be significantly more mainstream and important.
Secondly, if a beta player were to tell you anything, they wouldn't be beta any longer. Sprechen ze NDA?
This is going to be interesting.
There is no "Group Finder" in GW2, because each and every class can do each and every role.
Therefore, since this question has also been asked 1000 times, and since you seem to have not done any research about the game other than watch a dungeon video, I call for this thread to be closed.
P.S. you might want to look on the GW2 page or google something called "All we know about GW2" before you post a question, it's pretty much an extensive FAQ for the game (they really should make you read that before you can post in this section, it would solve the issue of many repeating threads about how this game will fail, yet the OPs are making these due to misconceptions).
The thread doesn't need to be closed, he's asking a valid question and deserves a valid answer and it seems he's has gotten a few. I would try to answer this but my headache is preventing big thought processes.
This is not a game.
I might get banned for this. - Rizel Star.
I'm not afraid to tell trolls what they [need] to hear, even if that means for me to have an forced absence afterwards.
P2P LOGIC = If it's P2P it means longevity, overall better game, and THE BEST SUPPORT EVER!!!!!(Which has been rinsed and repeated about a thousand times)
Common Sense Logic = P2P logic is no better than F2P Logic.
There might be people wanting specific classes with specific specs for certain of the harder content, but you can complete any dungeon with any group 8even if some takes a bit more skill than others, like 5 theifs).
But it wont be as bad as in a trinity game, there each group must have a tank and a healer no matter what.
You're going to need to do quite a bit more reading about the game since you seem to be missing quite a few pieces of the puzzle. But you *will* be able to DPS, not because you can pick a DPS class but because all of GW2's professions can DPS. In fact, you'll be expected to do that no matter what you choose. Healing is also provided by all professions, although the most effective heals in the game are the ones that you use on yourself. There is no direct targeting of friends, which makes direct healing impossible. Tanking is also much different because every single profession is capable of tanking, for some period of time at least, all depending on your build and the skills you choose to use. Effective groups when facing challenging content will typically alternate tanking duties, rolling in and out of the fray as needed.
Combat itself is a lot more free form than games like WoW. Positioning is king and avoiding damage is how you survive. Not many skills root you and you'll need to be moving a lot to be effective, using your Dodge ability to get out of the way of damage before it lands. Skills used by other players are quite visible and can often be used to create combos that boost your attacks, but you need to be paying attention to what everyone else is doing to take advantage of them. The game is all about being flexible, changing your tactics on the fly and reacting to what you see. In WoW terms, it's a bit like not standing in the fire, but the fire never stops and it chases you.
GW2 may not be at all what you're expecting. Do a bit more research and I'm sure it will become clearer. You might actually find it a welcome change.
There won't be a problem with LFG in as much as you won't be standing around yelling 'LF Healer / Tank with Tier 2+ gear' hoping that someone from that small percentage of the population happens to be on and up for a run. That said, I imagine level, build and player skill / teamwork will have a significant effect on how well a dungeon run goes, so you may not want to group with just anyone.
Sorry, it's a bit of a vague answer, but seeing as how no one has played group content at level cap on the live servers it's hard to say exactly how it will all work out in practice, but in theory at least you should be able to play whatever class you want, and as long as you're a good, team, player you shouldn't have any trouble getting a spot in groups.
Ummm... Im going to walk away now....
There is going to be people looking to add a specific class to their group so that they can take advantage of some particular skill or skillset. This however, will not be a crucial undertaking as finding a tank or healer would be in other games. So there really won't be an issue as such.
I think some people here don't understand the importance of time management.
I have subscribed to mmorpg's coverage of GW2. I also frequent GW2Fans, Guild Wars 2 Guru, etc. I have watched all of the videos in the GW2 Guru links.
Guess what else I do. I work 42+ hours a week. I am also the soul provider for my wife and one year-old daughter, whom I am an active role player (oh ya! Pun!) in her life.
Therefore, I do not have time for this so-called "further research."
I know there is no dedicated healing class. I am not sure why I said I could play a healer class (probably because I was pressed for TIME).
Thank you for the helpful posts. Much appreciated. I supposed I will play whichever character suits me best.
Dont let the negitive nancies* bug ya. I am in the same boat, I have played a healer class (and very well thank you very much) but I have the soul of a rogue. I am too lazy to find it, but somewhere is a thread titled something like "skilled warrior" or something. It is a video of someone who knows what they are doing. THey are dodging all over the place, avoiding the hit instead of just sitting there trading skills. When I saw that, first thing in my head was " I AM GOING TO BE A THIEF TANK!!!!!!!!!!!!" . Every class, every part of the "trilogy".
*yes.. I used the term negaitive Nancies. Fear the their Tank!
short answer here OP
tanks and healers were the bottlenecks in forming groups in most mmos, in GW2 there won't be that problem due there not being any tanks and healers.
There will still be LFX. There is a difference though. LFX won't be "Who is playing the correctly specced class and is capable of performing the role X". It will be asking "Who as a player is good at this role, no matter what class you have."
And no one will be looking for a healer, because no class is very good as a healer. There will be tanking, but groups will need more than one player who can tank as well as do other roles, because he will need to tank for a bit and then stop tanking to use self heals while other people take the aggro. Everyone in the group will probably be expected to DPS, and having some support and crowd control will probably be as important as well.
Guild Wars 2 still has roles, but they are:
1) defined more by the player than the class
2) flexible and even expected to change during or between fights
and
3) not quite the same roles we are used to, with support and crowd control becoming more important than healing and tanking
LOL seems trollin the GW2 forums are funner than playing your favorite MMO. Im glad I have this place to keep me entertained until the game comes out
Haha. I am not bugged by them. They just need to understand that there really ARE [employed/successful] adults that [will] play this game.
I'll have to find that video of the "Thief tank."
I think he reffered to this video.

Honestly i feel LFG will be a issue, not nearly as bad in other games. its more skill level that you are gonna have some trouble with.
Because i can.
I'm Hopeful For Every Game, Until the Fan Boys Attack My Games. Then the Knives Come Out.
Logic every gamers worst enemy.
I don't believe there is going to be a lfg issue as you see in most trinity games, however I do think you'll seem some situations where you got a group of people who are stuck in the mindset that they only play dps strict classes, you know those rogues that refuse to sap, mages that never cast poly. I don't think there is anything outside of pushing them out of there chair and playing the game for them that would save a group like that from failing. And if you get stuck in one of them I suppose you could call that a lfg issue.
Lol, there are still good ways to research, like downloading a podcast and listening to it while you do something else, travelling to and from work for example but I can understand your point. Tales of tyria is one of the several ones you can get.
You can play healer/support if that sounds good to you, but healing works different and is less effective in GW2 than other games. That does not mean a support character wont be popular since there also are many buffs you can make. Water ele seems to be best for this but other classes like necro and engineer seems to be able to do the job fine as well.
Thats the one! Yeah, it is a warrior, not a theif, but I would think being a theif makes dodging easier.
There is always the possibility of a LFG issue. There is no class requirement for dungeons, so tank and healing requirements won't be an issue, but I think there is something else that might cause a problem. I think the LFG problems in GW2 will depend on if a class, class combination, or class+weapon combination is so overpowered that people will only accept whatever is overpowered. For example, maybe a group of mesmers can teleport with portals so much that they don't need anybody else but mesmers.
Group LF 3 more B/P rangers!!!
There will always be some people prefering specific groups for the dungeons at least.
