Guild Wars 2: The Engineer Preview

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

After spending a good number of hours playing the last Guild Wars 2 beta, our editors have some thoughts about each of the game's professions. In today's preview, we take a look at the Engineer. Check it out!

Most of my time during the recent Guild Wars 2 Closed Beta weekend was spent with my Norn Engineer. I couldn’t get enough of the guy once I realized how many wicked choices to lay down destruction he had. The Engineer is all about traps, bombs, things that go boom and ways to crowd control and burn down your opponents’ health over time. Basically, you’re like Batman but with a utility belt that makes Bruce Wayne look like an underfunded amateur inventor. The class is one that will require a lot of experimentation, but there’s a different flavor of Engineer for everyone too: from pistols to rifles, to turrets, bombs, grenades, flamethrowers, and more. It’ll take some time for you to find your niche, but the beauty is… you never have to pick just one. The ability to swap between toolkit load-outs makes you a roving death machine and it is glorious.

From all the polls done so far, they get the least love among the classes. But when WvW starts rolling, people are going to be looking for them.

Looks like Engineers from Warhammer are inspiration behind GW2 engineer. Engineer was my most played class in War and it will be my main in GW2. Who wouldn't want turrets and rifles?

turrets, rifles, grenades, mines, and fire OH MY!!! I will def be rolling as an Engy as my first toon!

They still look more interesting to me than the Mesmer or Necro.

I'll definitely be playing one but I guess the reason why people aren't really excited for the character is because it's hard to see how to pull off combos with it.

    This is not a game.

There have been 2 other MMO's that had an Engineer type class... well 2 others that *I* played anyway.   One was WAR obviously.

When this class was revelaed for GW2... it pretty much was the hook for me.

Anyways, Love the Engineer class, it seems to be the most versatile, as well as difficult to pull off, will be fun looking at all the possible builds and which will stand out from the rest.

I'd go with TF2 being a greater inspiration for GW2 engineers. They've actually cited TF2 (among other games) as an inspiration for their competitive modes more than once.

Then we've got the engineer skills.

Sentries? Dispensers? A flamethrower with an airblast? A scattergun? A rocket jump? Mines that can be detonated mid-air? A healing gun? Med kits?

Just about every TF2 class is in there somewhere except for heavy, sniper, and spy.

Heck, the Warhammer Online engineer almost seems inspired by TF2 with turrets as their main mechanic, a shotgun as their primary weapon, and a wrench as their melee weapon. I know Warhammer dwarves have been around a lot longer than Team Fortress, but how long have they had that specific loadout?

I didn't sit by n watch every sec but it seemed like who ever was playing was constantly spamming no 1 hot key almost non-stop.  Sure the other abilities were used but not all that often if not rarely.  I hope this is just the player and not how the class will be played.  Spamming one button?  Sounds like the retard thief vid I say who just stood still taking hits n spamming one button.

Yeah TF2 was the main inspiration of the profession. A lot of the developers are players of TF2.

agree, gameplay looks dull. it is good that this video is shown in lower details so good graphic cant distract me for seeing same stupid pve and boring gameplay.

The sound is stuttering like really badly. Have to mute these vids to watch em.

Gameplay looks fine, but i really thought the game lookd differant. It does look like WAR and kind of WOW. But oh well as long the game is good i guess,

Yeah, the videos MMORPG.com do are pretty much underwhelming. Here is a good overview of the Engineer... LINK

I just realized how important the sound is in this game.....I just watched the second clip on mute first....then with sound, and OMG is silent boring. Thank you sound guy for being badass! :) Also....I think Eng sounds better than Engy....Engy sounds silly

Yogscast preview is rougly 100x better than mmorpg.com's.

This is probably not the right area to put this, but the staff here really needs to get with the times.  Written previews is not going to cut it in the future.  If you want new people to bother coming here you need to stop sucking at making videos.
