Attention Old School UO Veterans....What Happened?!?

What's up guys. Your probably in the same boat as me right now. You are either:

#1 Playing Battlefield 2 and tearing it up!
#2 Playing San Andreas.
#3 BOTH.
#4 Wondering why there are no good FFA PVP mmorpgs out there that let a skilled PVP'er/PK'er LOOT their enemies after killing them.

I've been playing San Andreas and it reminds me so much of how old Ultima used to be before OSI messed it up and turned it carebear. I remember I was farming players for their items and making a living by strictly killing and stealing from players, it was great!

Unfortunately every MMORPG out right now is carebear as hell. So seriously what the hell happened? I don't understand how these MMORPGs came to be. Lets take Everquest for example, WTF IS THIS GAME ALL ABOUT? Everquest is what messed everything up! Now every mmorpg coming out now is trying to be Everquest. No mmorpgs let you loot players anymore? I dont' get it. When I die in a MMORPG and lose all my items it doesnt' phase me one bit.

We need a MMORPG that caters to players like us. We are tough and our morale is unbreakable. We love killing players, talking trash and LOOTING. We could care less about NPC's. We don't mind grinding if we have to but in the end we want some good FFA PVP with some looting privelages.

I'm trying to figure out what happened, everyone is a pansy now. I played WOW for like 4-5 months and made a level 60 character and that game DIED real fast after that because Blizzard are a bunch of pansies who created a carebear environement. You want to know whats real sad? Age of Conan the mmorpg about Conan the Barbarian IS CAREBEAR, you can't even loot in that game.

Horsas, keep your eye on these forums this week: two new indie games are soon-to-be announced and they might be just what you've been waiting for.

    EVE-Online

I tried EVE. For like 2-3 hours I didn't see anyone while floating around in space. Then on top of that I discovered that skills are on a "Auto raise" or something where you pick what skill you want then wait like 2-3 weeks for it to go up? WTF is that? lol. I didn't like that concept at all, topped with not being able to see the person you are fighting face to face, I just didn't get into it. The auto raising of skills is what keeps me from playing it, it seems that if I want to compete with the top level guys I have to log in, set my auto raise skills then log out and play after like 6-8 months which is stupid.

LuzArius, no matter what board you're on, you're still an idiot, and you don't even understand why.

    -----------------------------
Listen Asmodeeus, seven years ago, Ultima Online didn't even have those pathetic "quests" that you refer to or those "professions" of ninja, samurai, necromancer, and paladin. Nor did it have any of the neon crap, or bug mounts. It didn't even have any "combat moves." You turned on attack and jousted with simplistic swings. It was a better game then. if you can't guess why then just uninstall the thing and move along. - Crabby

Was Eve-Online but I have no time for it now...

So I'm tearing it up in BF2. image

I bet this is how you'd act in real life if you could get away with it.  Killing, pillaging, looting, and talking trash to your hearts content.   Yeah, this way of thinking makes for a PERFECT community image

Plus, free-for-all PVP is stupid.  There needs to be a reason to PvP (Good vs. Evil, RVR etc.)

Err... I should clarify: our games cater to a more open-ended PVP system and a brand new take on dying. Forget the massive grind, trash talking and stealing though ;-)

If you played Eve-Onlien for just 2-3 hours, thats FAR to short. why did you see no-one? Lwt me put it this way, Eve-onlien is one persistant universe, basically the size of a galaxy, its MASSIVE. Join a player made corp, you'll see many more people.

Now about UO, from what I heard, they had to change it becuase the game was absolute anarchy, if our society was like it, we would not exist for long. UO was one big excuse to be a total asshole.

Edit: If a game did try to copy UO, its likely it would end up just like it. Deal with the fact carebears, as you attempt to label them, are people trying to be generous and pretty much support a game. Stop complaining about generousity.

I think it's the objective of your past self to make you cringe.

Tried whole 2-3 hours? EvE isnt game that gives you instant gratification just like uo didnt use to.

Offline skill training is one of best thing in eve, since it prevents all sort of quick skill gaining exploits and powergaming skills in few hours (there is plenty of other possibilities for powergames in eve). You can compete with "top" players lot sooner than 6-8 months if you play smart.

Good luck finding game that gives you instant gratification with possibility pk, steal, loot anyone.

after about a month (or the 1 mil skill point mark) you can be viable in pvp in Eve. No, you won't be taking vets on, one on one, but you can be efficient support by then, doing radar jamming and what not. The most important thing in that game is joining a Corp. They give purpose in the game. think of it as real life. Without a job, you have no purpose. sitting home all day forever would be depressing, no? ::::31::

Ok enough!!! This is where a line gets drawn. You bash on him cause of his player style. In uo you had the freedom to be good evil whatever. He chose the evil route. Seems the most vocal bunch on forum servers are the carebears!!! They cry loud enough to make themselves seem like the masses and destroy games. What amazes me is this. You got 15 carebear games out right now. You can be lazy collect fat loots off of lame quests to your hearts content. Why cant the old school uo gamer have just 1 game. You dont have to play it carebears!!!!! It may amaze a developer how many join it. If you build it they will come 8).

On a side note i find it humourous the bigest pansies in pvp gameing are the ultimate board warriors.

ps wish died cause it offered no pvp and claiming to be uo like without open pvp makes me cry.

All UO vets should check out Roma Victor - http://www.roma-victor.com/sotw

It's about the closest mmo to UO that is soon to launch and has ideal balance for PvP, with twich-based combat - enjoy!

Don't you just love the ignorance of people?  If we aren't playing a game that has total anarchy killing without reason just to grieve and piss people off we are automatically labeled a Carebear.  As if to say we don't at all enjoy PVP that actually has a logically reason to PvP.   As if to say that anyone that doesn't like UO isn't dedicated or "hardcore" and is a Carebear because he isn't a total jackass.

  • DisastormDisastorm Member Posts: 318

dude total anarchy killing is like the best, I don't know how people couldn't like it. I was never even good at it and I still thought it was fun as hell. Non-anarchy killing games are still good as long as they have pvp, but I don't see how anyone could play an MMO without pvp lol. I'd say the closest game to UO that is currently released is Lineage2, thats pretty hardcore and has anarchy killing, except that you go red after 1 kill, and the gameplay is largely based on levels and time, which is the complete opposite of UO, and, although there is a chance to drop items, its very small, and if you are red, its alot greater(for you to drop an item). But then again the items in that game were alot harder to get than the ones in UO.

Pansies this, pansies that, they try to play the game wihout PvP and STILL are always bashed about it and labeled a carebear by those who cant find a way to kill someone with no reason other than to take loot. Open PvP bring out the worst in a human and I stand by my claim that UO was a big excuse to let someone be a total jackass that didnt need skill or imagination, just some good equipment so they can kill a noob and call it skill.

Btw, I did not bash on him, I stated my opinion, about the only thing in my post that could be considered a small bash is "Deal with the fact carebears, as you attempt to label them, are people trying to be generous and pretty much support a game. Stop complaining about generousity".

Hmm I'd rather wait for a more polished game. Everything I've seen or read about RV has me thinking it's going to suck.

    Just a point of fact:
People who want to have open PVP would get a lot further in their discussion(s) with people who prefer voluntary or situational PVP if they'd quit calling them 'carebears' just because they enjoy a different playstyle.

Personally I prefer faction oriented or alignment oriented PVP rather than fully open PvP.

I'm not heavily into free-for-all pvp as I generally can't be arsed keeping my guard up all the time and don't like being griefed by 14 year old kids, although I do play Planetside from time to time.

There isn't really a mass market for hardcore pvp so you won't see many games being developed purely for this.  However, there are quite a few out there that have pvp servers, where pvp is totally open and looting is possible.

you must of played another uo. The old days no one truely used anything but player crafted gm stuff. easily available if ya had the funds. Think on catskills a dex suit ran about 2k and a weapon generally 750. So how can you say items??? Now days yes all games are very item centric and those who have the best items win over player skill. Most the time the mages were the hard core killers. They were naked except for a few regs. I dont think you played old uo and are bashing on a game you never played. YOU ARE ASSUMEING.
