What was "EArning well" pre WoW becomes "Earning nothing" post wow regardless on the effect on the actual playerbase in the previous game.
Look at my space. It still has millions of users. Does anyone say that? No. Friendster still has millions of users. Do they say that? no. Because their "millions of users" are nothing compared to facebooks billions.
Pre WoW they were "earning well enough" but after WoW, everyone will think "theyre nothing" and this prompted the devs to want to have more marketshare from WoW which then ended up with those games displacing their own playerbase.
Another reason is that if they did try WoW, they probably saw some noticeably better things in WoW like maybe controls or responsiveness or somefing which makes it hard to go back to their old game.
TLDR :
Those old games got too intimidated and forced itself to grow in the wrong way.
Edit : Lineage didnt get intimidated. IT stuck to its guns and didnt displace their playerbase. Look at UO now. Completely different. EQ completely different, etc.

First long-played MMO I quit was because I got laid off from my job and then shortly thereafter there was a round of layoffs of game staff. I empathized too much and it pierced through the escapism and left me feeling numb whenever I logged in.
The next two games I quit after 6+ months of playing were because of changes in the business model that made me feel uncomfortable.
The reason why ppl quit those old games is because after the 9th expantion the game is just ruined with all the new content that conformes to the masses ( ToA, Cataclysm, )
Most ppl find free shards that have the original game without expantions.
Most companies run their own games into the ground with updates when they shouldnt be fixing whats not broken.
The way mmo's were: Community, Exploration, Character Development, Conquest.
The way mmo's are now : Cut-Scenes,Cut-Scenes, solo Questing, Cut-Scenes...
Personally, I end up hitting a point where I feel like I've done everything I wanted to do and it's no longer worth the subscription fee. Sure if new content comes along, I might jump back in for a bit, but once that content is exhausted, I'm unsubbing again.
As good as these games are, most of us have played them for YEARS. And thats awesome. But even the best game does get old after a 4-5 years. I loved DAOC but after 6 years its just ran its course.
Same with wow. After 3 expacs its just old news.

I am. I'd like to have a game with the polish and controls of WoW, but not at the expense of losing the world and having it be a solo-to-cap game.
If I could find an emulated WoW server where all the mobs were elites, all classes had about 75% of the power/independence they did during vanilla (to the point it would be no contest that leveling with others was the better choice), and all loot piñatas, er bosses, were all randomly thrown in underground caverns (like Kurzen's caves, or all the naga caverns) instead of instances I'd probably play that instead.
Unfortunately, all those things I mentioned just above I can't really find in newer games, so I'm playing EQ1 because the content and atmosphere is infinitely more important than the convenience.
People can play wow forever. People can play lineage forever.
That's the fundamental problem right?
It's simple
The games i used to love are no longer the same games today. They have gone through too many changes to even be recognizable.
If EQ was released today with an updated engine I would play it again. Probably for a lot longer than I have with these clones. Hell it wouldn't even need more than 50.000 subs for me to be happy
People can play wow forever. People can play lineage forever.
That's the fundamental problem right?
because what is on offer at the moment is commercialized, overhyped, corporate garbage to put it frankly. This genre was much smaller in population before the giant MMo explosion. Blizzard made it commercial and popular, leading other developers to throw their hats into the ring, giving us a slew of titles that are worth just about nothing to some of us. A lot of vets are quite put off by the new breed.
To me it's quite similar to anything else that gains monumental commercial success. The term "sell outs" come to mind, although that may be a bit harsh, although no less untrue. It's similar to pop commercial music today or even more appropriate Metallica selling out after the Justice album and ensuing tour. A couple of years later, the Black album was released and thus began the change, and decline in the integrity of everything they had done. The genre is being overun by coprorate greed, and games aren't being made for the same reasons they used to be made. And the genre is paying the price.

After 8 years or so, ANYTHING gets old. That was a good try, though!

When a new games come to light, we hope those "elements" would be retained and seen for the great effect they had on the community that kept said game going. Another example, SWG (star wars galaxies) nothing compaires to the open world sandbox and later the customization of your homes that they had in that game, NOTHING. I already answered your stupid question in another thread, but you ignored it.
Here it is again.
A lot of reasons. Most of which you listed.
Most old games were fundamentally changed by their developers which caused their core base to leave. Instead of fixing these mistakes, those devs used their massive profits to create a new MMO, in the style of WoW, which didn't do so well.
So, the games we loved, don't exist anymore. It's really simple. This has happened with SOE, Turbine, Mythic, Funcom, it happened in SWG most famously. It happened in Ultima Online.
We can't go back because those games are NOT THERE.
Did you not notice that when EQ1 released a classic server there was a MASSIVE influx of players and they had to open extra servers?

an no,good games doesnt get old.
Good games do get old and dated. I loved Blades of Steel but I would not play it today as it go old, its out dated.
EQ was the best MMO and it was fun for the 6 years I played but most of the game is changed now and most of the people I knew and hunted with have moved on.
Why is it so much to ask for a new game with the old style gameplay? Is that really that much to ask for?

If you played the same dice game for a kirkillion years it would get old. Argument is dumb. Also those dice games don't get totally changed to another kind of game like MMOs did after WoW.

Nostalgia. I remember Baldur's Gate 2 very fondly, but would not like to play it anymore.

my first MMO was Eq in '99. I have an active sub and still play.
I'd probably still be playing EQ1 if the game wasn't dead, player wise, and didn't resemble an ancient artifact graphically.
Personally, I end up hitting a point where I feel like I've done everything I wanted to do and it's no longer worth the subscription fee. Sure if new content comes along, I might jump back in for a bit, but once that content is exhausted, I'm unsubbing again.
DAoC was killed by ToA, and never recovered.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

The idea is to eventually move onto bigger and better things. Some like that philosophy , others do not. It is a matter of choice.

I played 3 years Neocron that was my best MMORPG experience and now i feel sad to see that devs need help to survive
